I had a meeting at work today.  My assistant and I were the only women in the room with 15 men.  Managers and Salesmen.  

Question, any chilvalry left in the world and what’s up with discretion, did that die with chivalry? I went to grab a chair and one of them sat in it just as I was getting ready to sit in it myself, almost landed on his lap…I was a professional, of course, and told him to get the hell up and get a chair of his own.  

These men were disgusting.  Between the burps and farts, I couldn’t even concentrate on what was going on.   :-/  One of them was having a tug of war with his balls…he was scratching, pulling and tugging at them so much I thought he’d rip them off at any moment.  And I was right next to him.  Did he not see me there with the look of utter contempt on my face or did he just not care?  I finally asked him if he was alright, and he muttered "fine".   WTF?

Now I realize that burps, farts and itches are just a part of life, but some discretion would be nice - you know so other human beings don't have to be sujected to it...

Geez!  You people want equality and when you get it, you're not happy.   [smiley=nono.gif]  The point of women's lib was to allow women to be treated just like the men - not to have the men start acting like women.





Just kidding.  That particular scene may have had me looking for another seat.  Wouldn't want any crotch critters jumping ship and landing on me.  He's also one dude I'd never shake hands with.

I agree,
A few weeks ago I had my in-laws stay for the long weekend, well it was okay till we had a meal the 4 kids all over the age of 13 started to let rip,Oh gosh I thought I was going to be sick, then the father started, not one of them kept mouth shut while eating the noise was something else,The father started with the ball thing, then stuck his finger in his ear and cleaned it on his napkin,I had to leave the table, with a very quiet sorry, My husband ,"oh its the headache thing she will be fine" >:(. Well my hubby had a sore head that night ;;D The thing is my brother in-law is a Doctor!!( God help us all,is what I say :o)

Oh yeah, i've seen them do this too...and then they take the top of a pen and use the pointy end to clean the wax out of their nail... [smiley=hurl.gif]

Although I realise what you mean by "chivalry", please understand that you would not have found living in the Middle Ages in Europe very pleasant as a woman.

This notion of "chivalry" meaning courtesy to women is a misunderstanding. The truth is, every society devises terminology meant to express social stratifications but at the same time to disguise them. Women worked beside their husbands in the fields, in the textile industry, and in shops; but women were thought to belong to a separate order whose sole enterprise was sex, love, and marriage. Chivalry was a social construct put in place to keep people "where they belonged", and it was not until the decline of feudal society that there was an effort to romanticise it. For centuries there had been a gap between the peasants and the nobility, but steadily the middle class filled that gap, thus decreasing the influence of the upper class. As power shifted away from those with skills and money, the almost inevitable response of the nobility was an insistence upon those qualities that set them apart as a class and an emphasis on an ideal of noble conduct that defined the class.

We may look through our rose-coloured glasses and see politeness, but it was a caste-system.

Our modern concept (misconception) of chivalry is a result of an attempt to glamorized the flawed social structure of the Middle Ages by authors such as Sir Thomas Malory (Le Morte D'Arthur) who longed for the "good old days" of being born important.

I, for one, hope that chivalry is dead.

But common courtesy and respect still exists. Just ask my wife.

Oh poor you! Fancy getting stuck in a stinky room like that!
I would have had to say something like "nice aftershave.. hell of alot better than how you USUALLY smell" or something even less polite  [smiley=laugh.gif]
Next time take a bottle of very cheap and nasty perfume and spray it copiously where they are sitting.. after they have had to go home to their wives smelling like a tarts boudoir they might think twice about having to have their own peculiar scent covered up!!

I wouldn't exactly say one in a million, but definitely a dieing breed.  There are still a few of us left.  I open doors, pull out chairs, unlock the wife's car door first and close it for her before getting in myself (even when it's raining) and even give up my seat to a lady.  I have yet to throw my cloak over a mudhole for a lady to walk across, but hey...nobody's perfect.

Wow. Thanks for clarifying this.  So basically, the word chivalry was created to hide the fact that women were looked down on in those times?  So maybe a better word would be "gallant"?...okay...looked it up..."A man's courteous attention to a woman"...???

To be honest, I've never met a more courteous or respectful man than my boss.  Not too many others...I agree with Gator that it's a dying breed...and Gator, it isn't complete until you do the "coat on the mud" thingy... ;;D  [smiley=laugh.gif]

 It has nothing to do with men, but a total disrespect for other people. My wife acts the same way around me to the point of my having to leave the room. I'm sure she is not the only woman like that. Of course this is not in public, so it may be just me LOL.

If you think that's bad, while visiting my relatives, a friend of theirs tested the butter with his finger when asked to pass it. Since my relatives are both retired nurses, this went over.......not too well  :o
