Title: Beauty contests- who cares?
Post by sandie99 on Feb 4th, 2005, 1:27pm
During the last few weeks tabloid headlines have been talking about one thing: Miss Finland competition.
We know all we don't need to know about the 10 contestants, seen them in their underwear and smiling without make up.  ::)

This year the conpetition is a two-day event: as I type they are broadcasting live the semifinal and tomorrow is the final...

Every year there's a scandal related to the competition. If the contestants are not too thin, they are too fat. And every now and then one contestant has done something horrible; this year is no exception. One contestant has been thrown out of the show for
1) posing nude - rules forbid it
2) stealing
3) being married - again, rules forbid

Luckily for me the TV comes with remote control so I don't have to watch the show. When the new tabloids come on sale on Monday morning, the top 3 will be on cover. And speculation starts: did we choose the right woman...? You see, the jury usually never picks the "right" winner... :P

At least, Miss America contestants have to have a talent skill prepared, our contestants just walk around on stage and reply to simple questions...

I despise the whole beauty contest idea...more objectification of women. It's pathetic...

This string is going to be interesting.
It won't be long before someone posts "Langa and nani, you are 100% correct.
Now let's go back to the chick that got thrown out of the contest. Got pics?"

But I ain't going to post it.

Guys, if you really need to see the contestants, here's a link:

The contestant who was thrown out was no 5.

This thread is worthless without pics.

Mmmm... Mira Salo, Ms. Finland 2004.

I'd objectify her until  I was sleepy. Then take a nap.

By the way, there is a contest for the guys, too. Mr Finland.  ;;D
When I was as a trainee journalist, I had to make a story about another competition, Mr Scandinavia... That did include guys wearing thongs... ;)

I would not be opposed to seeing that string before it got thorwn off.    Hell,   I wouldnt  mind seeing what it got   thrown off of.     Titts and Ass.     Good things to view between headaches.    Too old to catch em, but would not be opposed to them catching me.

Surely you jest... Other than have most of their parts in the right place, the contestants here need only qualify by breathing and saying that she wants "world peace."

For me; it was all over when Bert Parks died.   :o

I haven't watched it in years.

Minun mielesta Miss Suomi kisat on kauneuskisat siina missa muuallakin maailmassa ja osanottajilta vaaditaan muutakin kuin vain nayttaa natilta uimapuvussa ja kyky kavella vastaten kysymyksiin. Mita vikaa kauneuskilpailuissa muutenkaan on? Osanottajat, kuin katsojatkin nauttivat ja siita on iloa silmalle.

For the non-Finns:

Speaking as a Finn and a girl who has been in beauty competitions, I must say there is more to them than just walking around looking cute in a bathing suit and answering simple questions. And what the heck is wrong with beauty pegeants anyway?

They are often critisised as "sexist" and "heterosexist." But why is a celebration of female physical beauty sexist - in other words "anti-woman" - when all the women involved are eager to participate?

People have said they find the "objectification of women" pathetic. But being judged on the basis of your beauty is no more "objectification" than taking a college exam and being judged on your intellect. No one decires this.

I think it is time we celebrate beauty and not pathologize its display. Otherwise, it just sounds like envy.

Spoken from the first runner up... ;;D

Lil E...it's not envy. It's about women continuing to allow their objectification. Why not intellect contests...
As long as there are women who allow themselves to be objectified...there will be men like Biker. What is especially pathetic to me is the culture of 5-12 year old girls who are pushed into this whole scene. Have you seen pics of 7 year olds made up to look like young women? Jon Benet Ramsey ring a bell? IMHO...strippers, porn stars, beauty pagent contestants...little difference. Women who put themselves on display for money. Whether it's a dollar in a G-string...or a college scholarship...
Women are often their own worst enemy.  :(

Edited to add: I see nothing wrong with celebrating beauty or showing it off. The difference between a college exam and a pagent...you don't have to walk around in a swimsuit to get a scholarship based on your intellect.

Until we ladies stop oogling the beefcake o'the day pics, I don't think we can argue "objectification" without looking like a bunch of hypocrites.

Envy?

Hell YEAH its envy!

If I looked THAT GOOD in a swimsuit, and could get paid for it....I would be there!

Any woman who says differently...well,  she is lying to herself.

If someone wants to participate on a beauty pagent, that's their choice. I don't envy them. I just don't see the point.

By the way, according to 10 o'clock news, the winner was no1, Hanna Ek.

I have to say I agree with my wife (I know, big surprise). Whether it is beauty or academia, by making someone's worth dependent on his or her performance, you have solidly objectified that person.

You can decry the little girl pageants and the push that parents put on small kids, but take a look at the world of academics and you'll see the same cruelty and objectification. There will always be such extremes, in everything where there is competition - in other words, in life. But to judge (to take a random example) Erika Ebbel, Miss Massachusetts, on the perversion of little girl pageants is unfair. Ms. Ebbel is a beauty pageant winner, yes, but she is also an honour student at MIT. According to her, "To win a pageant, you must have numerous interests, poise, intelligence, good speaking skills, confidence and the ability to persevere. To succeed at MIT, an individual must exhibit similar traits."

So what's the difference if you push your child to be "beautiful" or "smart"? I know, you'll say pushing them to be smart is ok, because it helps them to succeed in life. I say you have a double standard because you personally value one over the other. Your worth is no more dependent on if you can spell "maneuver" than if you look like a hottie in a bathing suit, yet those things are valued in society. Keep in mind that there is a particular culture that pageants (and academia) reflect.

But this whole thread reminds me of my favorite E. E. Cummings poem:

mr youse needn't be so spry
concernin questions arty

each has his tastes but as for i
i likes a certain party

gimme the he-man's solid bliss
for youse ideas i'll match youse

a pretty girl who naked is
is worth a million statues

Amen!

Hirvimaki-Isi

PS: She is BOTH smart AND beautiful!
