Title: What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up? Post by PrettyH8Machine on Feb 4th, 2005, 4:39am Did you become it? When I was little, I wanted to be a Policeman or Fireman. I thought to be cool. Then, at the age of 7 I discovered KISS, and decided I wanted to be a rock star. Did I become it? Why certainly. Small scale of course. When I was 12 I spent three months in a professional apprenticeship with a rural vet in Sheridan Oregon (through the school I attended). Although I enjoyed it very much, the first time I witnessed a surgery (a dog's crushed leg being "put beack together" with pins) I realised it was not the career path for me. The other thing I wanted to be when I grew up was an artist. Although I am now a successful artist (and a graphic designer), I am still waiting to grow up. Hirvimaki-Isi |

Was in a few bands early in life before marriage and children. Post divorce I was a Psychology major for 4 years till I had to drop out right at finals to care for Mom before, during and after an emergency brain surgery. Put in the effort, but I guess things just weren't meant to be. :-/ |

I wanted to go in as an officer after college and be put on the front line for conflicts. They said they wouldn't' give me a chance to die for my country and figt for it like a man would. So I skipped that idea and became a computer programmer. |

That's exactly what I did. I wanted a warm, close, and loving family. So far, so good. I wanted to be a pilot. I flew on Hueys in the Army as a medic, flew a powered parachute (ultralight) fora few years, and logged 15 hours and solo'd in a Cessna, and have logged time in a Cherokee and a Navion. I wanted to learn to scuba dive. I go for my qualification dives this coming spring. I wanted a Jeep. I drive a Jeep. I wanted to take a bullet in the head while pulling a wounded comrade out of the line of fire. Fortunately, I didn't succeed at that. |

Then I wanted to fly planes... so I was goin to go into the air force.......... but then i developed asthma - and got pregnant before I graduated high school so - then - I wanted to be a mom and i wanted to be ramon's wife........... I got that - so now - i work in the casino business... i love my job - it's fun.. but it's HELL on my body - I have arthritis and doing my job hurts my hands - shoulders, elbows and back and knees........ so i dont know how much longer I can do it. I'm gonna do it until I cant anymore - but I dont know what else to do........ so NOW - at the age of 32 - I'm re-evaluating what I wanna do with my life. And unlike my father who was a carpenter, I find myself being an un-employed carpenter, which my father never experienced untill he retired. My grandfather was a carpenter. My great grandfather was a carpenter. I often think all my ancestors were carpenters back to before the time of Christ. And I happen to become the first of my line that is un-employed. When the boss sees me experience a CH spell, I am "off the job." I reckon its time to start my own Carpentry practice. Dayumm the state regulations and taxes. |

I ended up in the airline industry. Braniff International----bankrupt 1982 Eastern Airlines---------bankrupt 1988 It was a wonderful 20 years---started in 1965 at O'Hare. So, no pensions or greatly reduced pension. Braniff was the beginning of the policy---"can't deal with the unions, file bankruptcy." And now we see that in all industries. I never could figure out what I wanted to do. Looking back, i'm glad I've had the opportunity to do different jobs. I've kinda leaped from one to another and have enjoyed them all. Went from the U.S. Navy, to teaching vocational education, then went into management as a department head; then became a control room operator in a power plant; then back into management as a facility manager, and now I'm working as a stationary engineer. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. Maybe go back to teaching. |

Then in the 70's and the space race cooled off I wanted to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force. Then late 70's early 80's I discovered that funny little left handed smoke and grades dropped and I had no idea of what I wanted to be. All my life I was raised around guns and had been shooting with my dad skeet and animals since I was 3 a matter of fact I cut my teeth on a Colt revolver, (dad thought it would be cool to be able to tell people I cut my teeth on a Colt). Anyways I graduated from "High" school and enlisted in the Marine Corps, went in straight Infantry, well my talent with a rifle did not go un-noticed so they sent me to Sniper school. I spent the next 8 years in exotic lands and places, some of which are not listed in my service record book and no evidence of me ever being there. I got out of the Marine Corps and went to work at agas station since I was so qualified with all the training I had recieved. I went to school to be a Emergancy Medical Technician. Fell in love with the sound of the ambulance, soon went to college to become a Paramedic. Still love takeing care of the sick lame and lazy and the rush of adreneline from a cool run. But I still dont know what I want to be when I grow up, but what I do now will do until I decide. Rodger |

When i helped out at Dr. Cruises practice, i argued with people who opted to take have the animal put to sleep instead of an expensive treatment that would save their life. That and regardless of the procedure i would burst into tears. When it comes to pets, i'm just a softy. After that i just wanted to be a mother...still working on that one. |
