Title: Hey Tekkies... Is This A Virus? Post by PrettyH8Machine on Feb 3rd, 2005, 6:18am My computer tried to eat itself yesterday. Whenever viewing the properties on my harddrive (it is a whopping 10gigs) It has been saying I've used about 3 gig of capacity and had about 6 gig left. I knew better than this, as two folders alone were over 3 gigs. I didn't think it was too over the line though. I downloaded some songs yesterday and my puter locked up. Tried to reboot but it couldn't finish through. I finally put it in safe mode and it rebooted so I ran AVG anti-virus guard with no results. I deleted a few files on my own, checked the properties and found I only had about a 1/4 gig of capacity left! I about freaked because I realized the harddrive had filled up and with past experience when that happens, it just takes a shit and has to be reformatted altogether (amost lost everything.) I tried to defrag the harddrive but even after several hours it still was at 0%. When I try to run scandisk in safe mode it restarts several times and says something is writing to the harddrive and I need to shut off whatever program is running, but when I bring up task manager the only thing it shows running is explorer; so Scandisk will not run. Is this a virus? If so, should I just save everything on my machine I really need and reformat the HD? Teknickelly inept, CD |

Title: Re: Hey Tekkies... Is This A Virus? Post by Rock_Lobster on Feb 3rd, 2005, 1:50pm Does not sounds like a virus. From windows explorer, the search function can be keyed to return files that are > a given size. Do a search for mega-files. Start at 1GB and work your way down. 1GB == 1,000,000KB. If you get no hits try 100MB... 100,000KB. Go down from there. Post the names of any mega-files. Correct... you cannot do a windows defrag while windows is up. Kinda like 'the car will not start when the driver seat is occupied'. I use the norton defrag. I see 'diskeeper' out on download.com ... it has a free trial period. |

Title: Re: Hey Tekkies... Is This A Virus? Post by cootie on Feb 3rd, 2005, 10:25pm My other one did all that....started freezein up alot and could NOT defrag and would stay at 0 %. Anyhow......from what I was told ya gotta shut off yer anti virus when runnin the defraggin and stuff....and close programs. The anti virus will cause the one error message 'sumthin is writein to disc' if ya don't "so I was told".........so I always disable it now for that. My new one has it's own set of problems now.....over heatin still and won't do a systems restore. I dont' download music cuz this dialup is SO slow I'd never get it....and it'd overheat more. I don't even run screensavers now. Yeah.....it needs to go to the pooter doctor but that will not be cheap !! Always sumthin Pam |
