Title: How secure does this make you feel? Post by fubar on Feb 3rd, 2005, 2:39am I just got back from the second trip business trip this year, and when I got home, discovered that I had inadvertently packed my full-sized Leatherman Wave tool in my bag. This tool has a rather lethal 2.25” blade, a 2.5” serrated blade, a very sharp 2.5” saw, is make of solid steel, and weighs a good ½ pound (at least). This tool has been in my carry-on bag since I came back from Utah way back in November, so it’s made at least 2 round trips to various places since then. Would somebody please tell me HOW THE F*^K was I allowed to travel on no less than 4 commercial flights without so much as a blink from TSA? I have lost all faith in the idiots who are screening our passengers. Jesus. -Fu |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Gator on Feb 3rd, 2005, 3:59am I had on of those little military can openers (P-38 ) you get with your c rations. The small protrusion that opens the cans is about a half inch long at best. Bastards in Billings, Montana wouldn't let me carry it on the plane. I explained that I had been carrying this thing on my keychain for months of air travel and he was the first to ever say anything. I also told him I could shove an ink pen through his neck quicker and easier than to use that teeniny little piece of metal as a weapon. He let me keep my ink pen and took my can opener. Non common sense having non thinking for himself bastard. Editted because 8 and) close together make 8) [smiley=ohjez.gif] |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by PrettyH8Machine on Feb 3rd, 2005, 6:29am Hm, been asking this question since DavCon. Took a Greyhound bus. No bag was searched, x-rayed, no dope sniffing dogs or nuttin. My bag could have been filled with plastique and no one would have known. Are buses really a safer method of transpo over planes and trains? :-/ CD |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by clarence on Feb 3rd, 2005, 7:29am Never really been asked about anything. ONly time was about my Trex... My backpack went through the x-ray, and the 2 guards asked me what was in it. Once I explained what it was, they conferred and let me keep it. However, this was not in North America, it was in Prague, Czech Republic. And those guys scared the crap out of me. Never been scared going through security in NA. Casey |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by john_d on Feb 3rd, 2005, 10:53am I remember after Sep 11 they took away the metal knives from first class but left the metal forks. I had always thought I would rather get stabbed than forked, lol. [smiley=laugh.gif] |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by fubar on Feb 3rd, 2005, 11:05am I just don't understand how they can miss this thing... not once, not twice, not three times... but at least 4 different times in different airports. You would think at least ONE of these maroons would have spotted it in my bag. This is way more dangerous than a box cutter. Dumbshits. |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by echo on Feb 3rd, 2005, 11:07am They took away my laptop locking cable because it could be used to tie someone up. But they let me keep my charging unit with AC cord to wall and DC cord to laptop (each is approx. 3 feet long), LAN cable (9 feet) and external mouse (5 feet). |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Lizzie2 on Feb 3rd, 2005, 11:55am In May of 2002, I flew down to Florida and back on a couple of separate flights. I had my intramuscular syringes (1 inch needle) in my backpack the entire time because I actually forgot they were in there. I had kept them there while I was in school, etc, and I just forgot to take them out before the trip. When I realized they were in there, I was sitting at the gate before one of the flights...I actually pulled the syringe out while looking for something. I quickly shoved it back into my bag and thought...holy crap..can't believe they didn't stop me for THAT one!! It IS scary sometimes... |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by rickyshot on Feb 3rd, 2005, 1:18pm Believe me all this "security" is all posturing. They check what they humanly can but a lot of stuff gets by. The fact is life is a gamble. Any terrorist worth his salt will get on the plane. You can sit at home and be safe and never ventrue out the door or just live. Hmmmm Greyhound buses the next haven for terrorists.......They never check anything there unless you go over the border. Then they might. ::) |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Biker on Feb 3rd, 2005, 7:42pm And all the time riding the scooter, they pull me over to check my papers. Licenese, insurance, and registration. Yea, Papers. Then they search for drugs or whatever. They get into the toolbag down near the ground on the front of the bike usually covered in dirt, and find a hammer. Then have the gaul to ask me why I carry a lethal weapon. Who is in charge in this country anyway????? |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Lizzie2 on Feb 3rd, 2005, 7:47pm The worst thing I saw was also the same time I managed to accidentally have the meds in my bag. They were randomly pulling people out of line for the plane and making them take off their shoes, open all their bags, etc etc. They pulled this like 80 some year old man out of line - and it took him like a half hour to get everything undone and then back together. I seriously wanted to cry. So our elder population are now the terrorists?? Sheesh...I never saw a guy look less harmless. I know we can't stereotype...but seriously...the guy was handicapped and looked like he had about 10 grandkids, all of which he spoiled greatly. They could have picked someone else!!! |

And that just reminded me of yet one more thing from the Florida trip. On the way back, I was going through either Tampa or Sarasota/Bradenton airports...probably Tampa because it is cheaper and I got my ticket last minute. Anyhow, I was bringing home this big box of stuff that my grandparents had for my parents. My grandfather secured the box by tying it with the original sailing line from his 30 foot sailboat which he sold in 1980. When I got to check in, my grandfather was shocked (it was still pretty new) that they had to open the box and pull everything out. Well, he asked the girl if he could untie the line, and she said there was no time and cut it into about a billion pieces. I honestly thought he was going to cry.... That was not a good moment! |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Jonny on Feb 3rd, 2005, 8:41pm Under Clintons rien he made it acceptible for small knives and box cutters to be brought on planes no questions asked, this is cause the metal detectors could not determine between nail clippers or knives......Old Bill didnt want to spend any cash on detectors that would. Welcome to America ;;D |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Leesa on Feb 3rd, 2005, 9:06pm Fu it doenst surprise me at all. I know the Leatherman well I own one! Love that thing!! They will take your nail clippers & your P-38 (I have one of those too ;;D) but not a Leatherman!! Go figure! ::) Another reason why I dont fly and I REFUSE to take a grayhound anywhere! Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by cootie on Feb 3rd, 2005, 10:51pm Took a tour bus up to Canada to a casino with my mom.....goin thru customs we had a few people get on the bus and talk to us all "asking" if anyone had alchohol, cigarettes or weapons. Everyone sat quietly stareing at them.....so they let us thru. On the way home customs boarded the buss again and "asked" if anyone had any achohol, cigarettes, weapons or money. Everyone kinda sat there rollin there eyes. I kept wantin to jump up yelling 'YES'.......hey was jus 'thinkin' to myself. Dumb questions with no answers Pam So what we need are honest terrorists that will confess when asked........jus seem'd dumb they asked that cuz who the hell is gonna say YES anyhow ???? If it is that important I think more should be done. Oh yeah.....the bus driver kept falling asleep on the way there......LOVELY !!!!! |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Barry_T_Coles on Feb 3rd, 2005, 11:42pm I live in a regional country town in the north west of Western Australia population about 5000. Here you cant even get into the departure lounge to say goodnye to any one without going through rather strict security, everything has to be taken out of your pockets, steel capped safety footwear has to be removed and if anything is doubtfull they will hold it untill you return and leave the building. Does make you feel a heck of a lot safer though. Kind Regards Barry |

I know we've been there before, but why not? It wasn't grey haired old men or wheelchair bound old women that perpetrated 9/11, it was young Arabic men. If they have a problem with people looking at them cautiously, tough shit. Maybe if the Arabic world would take a stand against the terrorists, there might be fewer of them and then the rest of the world wouldn't be so distrusting of them. Quote:
I never had any to begin with. Any time the government sticks it hands into anything they screw it up. That being said, I flew about once every 2 weeks for the first 6 months after 9/11. I wasn't scared to fly then and I'm not afraid to fly now. You want someone to do a good job screening people - make the flight crews do the screening or make it a rule that at any given time a screener can be pulled off the line and put on a plane with the passengers they searched. People with something to lose if they screw up might just do a better job. Just a thought. |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by Kevin_M on Feb 4th, 2005, 8:02am There used to be Air Marshals that boarded random flights. I haven't heard that term used in over a year now, I wonder if they still do that or have eliminated that job. Kevin M |

Title: Re: How secure does this make you feel? Post by BlueMeanie on Feb 4th, 2005, 9:26pm Search and get slammed. Not search and get slammed. Maybe we should strip search every passenger boarding, including the crew. Was there ever a hijacking before 911. Here's an idea... wait until an Amtrack or Grayhound gets hit, then we can blame that president too, whoever it may be when it happens. It's sucks we gotta be in this position. Just don't know. |
