Title: Lost Everything on my computer
Post by athos on Jan 27th, 2005, 2:03am
applications were downloaded by my kids that somehow set my security prefs in IE to zero.  Once down applications could download at will..  then the vireuses and trojan horses came...

Complete drive lost.... and only 3 month old backups.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Do you have another computer that is fully up to date with all the security updates and virus updates?  You could pull the corrupted drive and slave it and run an all files virus scan on the drive.  After the virus scan, copy the data to a safe place and reformat & reload the drive.  Copy the data back into their proper folders.  Should be minimal data loss.  Of course any programs you don't have disks to reload will be toast.

Our family policy is that internet stuff must be done on linux unless there is a damn good reason to use windows.  Haven't had a problem on the linux side,  used to get routine infections on the windows side. Check out Xandros Linux - it is easy enough for anyone to use.  Most of my computers have dual boot - WinXP and Xandros - a menu pops up when turning on the computer.  If windows is not actively chosen, the computer goes into Linux.

There is software that lets you log the keystrokes to keep tabs on the young'uns.  8)

But there are tons of seemingly innocent sites offering kid-games that will install adware and spyware.  There are also some webpages that don't require downloads or any end-user agreement to puncture IE and invade your machine.

I've started using firefox instead of IE and 99% of my problems have disappeared...no viruses, no hijackers, no problems at all.  It's a free download and transfers all your settings from IE so you keep your favs and homepage and everything.  If you don't like it, you can go back to IE at any time.  I've been using it for about 3 months and have never been happier.

I was downloading cool WILDCAT pics for my wallpaper on my desktop and a popup told me I had to download some sort of stupid installer with a familiar name so I checked ok.........."wrong".......bad move !! Trojans and you name it !!!! I wasn't payin attention.....my brouser sucks now.....dunno what is wrong. All web pages look like they were designed by second graders. Huge letters and blan.....can't use cool stationery anymore in email (outlook) or apply colors to type or anything now....lot of blackgrounds are jus white on web pages and too big of letters and have tried everything to fix it. (even talked to tech support) Even reinstalled IE 6 but is the same. Found anouther brouser (Advanced brouser it's called ?) and is the same but bit faster. Firefox, Mozilla and Opera were slower then shit. My antivirus became uncomapatible and can't recieve this years subscription I bought online......arghhhh !! Can anyone get linux ? I have windows XP.....wonder if it would help me too ? Brouseless brouser Pam

Edit: cuz my spelling sucks....alot of things suck these days !!!!
