Title: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Ree on Jan 26th, 2005, 7:51pm Resuscitate or NOT Resuscitate... Had to talk about this with my parents today... Sad but true............How do you feel about this... Leave it here for the world to see. If you had a massave coronary, stroke or anurism........... would you want to be resuscitated if it meant you might be on artificial means? Ree.............. NO I don't want to ever be hooked up to artificial means.........If I'm dead for a certain amount of time........ and it means artificial means ( tubes vents etc) nope for Ree What say you? |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Jeepgun on Jan 26th, 2005, 7:55pm My bags are packed and I'm ready to go. If I am fortunate enough to have a heart attack, stroke, or aneurysm, punch my ticket and let me go. Life has been hard, but I've confronted it as a warrior: head-on. I want to go with dignity, honor, and meet my death in the same way. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Jan 26th, 2005, 7:55pm We have living wills and it's in our Power of Attorney as well. Do not hook me up to a bloody machine. I've spent my lifetime hooked to one machine or another it seems, (I mean work related of course) but sure don't want to be there just to keep me breathing! Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by don on Jan 26th, 2005, 7:57pm I went to visit my mother in the hospital. Walked into the room and was in respiratory arrest. They sent in the crash team. The Doc came out and said if they didn't ventilate her she would would die from not being able to get her breath. I said go for it. I called my sister who quickly reminded me that mom didn't wish to be resusitated. Even if I had remembered I think I still would have said go ahead. Itsd not an easy wish to honor. Not a good day for don. She died later that night. |

It was one legal fee we happily paid. I was a nurse for too long. Don't ever want to stay hooked up if I'm physically ready to move on. Kris |

Now, we're dealing with my 80 yr old mom.........try this.. Chemo(at age 80, with metastatic cancer) or no chemo........ Not trying to hijack, Ree......just foremost in my thoughts. Cathi |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Mr. Happy on Jan 26th, 2005, 8:23pm Since my Live Long and Prosper lifestyle doesn't seem to be working out all that well, the future Ex asked me this DNR question just two nights ago. It's a realistic situation we all may have to face. After a little deep thought, the answer became self evident: Bring me back once, just in case I was fucking around. After that, step on my throat. Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by BarbaraD on Jan 26th, 2005, 8:28pm My mom said "NO MACHINES" so we put a DNR order on her chart. My brother's wife was yelling for them to do something, while I held her and told her I loved her until she quit breathing. It was hard not to do something, but it was what she wanted. All in all, it was much easier than watching a machine breathe for my dad until we had to make a decision to pull the plug. So my vote is for DNR. NO MACHINES! Hugs BD |

I agree....if I'm still young. unless i'm like over the age of 70 - if I'm that old - just let me go - nothing but downhill after that anyway. Just my opinion. I've been thinking a lot about this since Ramon's grandmother passed last month. I need to get some life insurance - but I dont understand whole life.. term life.. all that shit. Gotta get on the ball and learn ....... shit...... |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by floridian on Jan 26th, 2005, 8:34pm I think the person is dead if they flat-line and there is massive, irreversible brain damage. If that happens to me, and my liver and kidneys are still warm and working, give them to someone else who can use them. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Kevin_M on Jan 26th, 2005, 8:44pm My dad went down, heart stopped, and the fire dept. did the voltage thing on the chest. After five attempts, one said he heard a heartbeat and off to the hospital he went, but I knew it had been over ten minutes and, with no blood pumped to the brain... Hospital docs wanted to due some kind of brain scan to detect any brain activity, to be sure, but it was Sunday and it wasn't going to happen until Monday. I wasn't at all optimistic, but to be sure, we said ok, for a clean conscience. I went in late Sunday night to see him and the respirator had him heaving and moving way too erratically. I went and felt his feet and they were ice cold. Called the siblings in and that was it, heavy morphine dose by nurse. There is that urge to want to be absolutely sure, but what I saw made me decide "that's it", I guess I had to see it first. No regrets. It's hard to not give them every possible chance first though, but against all good reason? No, not again. Kevin M |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Charlie on Jan 26th, 2005, 9:08pm I have had DNR for years. No Star Trek shit. By the way, it's important that your DNR thing is in the hands of your relatives and friends and it's probably a good thing to double check the thing. There have been some cases where some religious goofball tried to get in the way. It has to be very clear. Charlie |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Redneck on Jan 26th, 2005, 10:15pm My DNR is in place. It's a tuff decision for a loved one though. My mother has hers in place, and is currently in the hospital with pneumonia again. Had pneumonia and light heart attack christmas night, also has a inoperable at this time abdominal anueryism. She is currently diagnosed with end stage COPD. I have been sitting in the hospital the last 2 days watching her struggle to breathe wondering what I will really do when it stops? Life sucks sometimes don't it. (the hospital does have some nice aides, they stopped to see if i was allright while i was in the truck sucking on my 02 bottle this afternoon) |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Renee on Jan 26th, 2005, 10:16pm DNR for me! Already in the hands of my family and attorney. This life has brought alot of suffering. Why extend this life when there is a better life waiting? That's how I feel. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Melissa on Jan 26th, 2005, 10:44pm I asked hubby if he'd leave me hooked up to a machine. He said he'd shoot me instead. ;;D I honestly think he'd have a very hard time letting go, so hopefully it won't happen for a very long time and I can have a living will set up with a DNR order. I hate thinkin bout these things, but they need to be discussed. :( |

[smiley=crackup.gif] You kill me, man and what better thread to do it in, eh? I like RJ's answer. [smiley=laugh.gif] Actually, I have a living will with a no heroic measures clause. I have discussed this with my family. If the only way I'm hanging around is hooked up to some machine, let me go. There's been too much pain in this life. Let me go see what's next. When I went down to see my mom in the hospital, late one night she was having major problems breathing. At one point I had to hold her sitting up in bed and coach her breathing. Once that episode passed and she could breath again, she called my sister and me to her bed side and made us promise that if she kicked it we were to make sure her DNR wishes were honored. That's a sobering fucking moment for you. Luckily we didn't have to make that call. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 27th, 2005, 12:14am If I were in a vegetative state or had some incurable disease, then fire up the kiln and toss me in it. Heart attack is a different story... I say yes, bring me back, if it has not been 15 minutes since my brain tasted o2. I know shitloads of people who have had heart attacks and are in good shape (breathing) today. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by sandie99 on Jan 27th, 2005, 1:30am Yes. I would like to be resuscitated. Hook me to macines, keep me alive! that's because my uncle was in taht situation few years ago and the docs said that's there's no hope. Well, he's life and well today because my aunt didn't give in! :) But I must agree with the rest; I hope I nor my closeones will never have to face that decition. (knocking wood) Sandie |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by hilbily on Jan 27th, 2005, 6:56am DNR is on file. I don't like laying around, anyway, unless I can watch a ballgame. My grandmother was resucitated after a heart attack...and she came back pissed. Said she was heading toward the "beautiful light" when she suddenly had to return. Stayed mad at the kids who "allowed that to happen". Whatta ya do, it's your momma? Jim |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by BobG on Jan 27th, 2005, 7:04am My will says DNR. But I probably wouldn't have much say in the matter anyway. I'm more valuable to my wife dead than alive. She's already picked the color of blue for her hair and the color of pink for her poodle she'll have when she moves to Florida. ;;D modified to add: Renon, if you're reading this I'm just kidding. |

Title: Re: New and Interesting Poll by Ree the Poll Troll Post by medic1852 on Jan 27th, 2005, 7:55am Well I have worked EMS (or ambulance driver for those of you who dont know the difference) for years. I have only seen one person walk out of the Hospital and lead a productive life. I have heard of others but only one person that I worked walked out. But this was an exceptional run, the gentelman was a fireman therefore young and healthy, he collapsed on the scene of a fire and the others stopped fighting the fire and started cpr. My unit arrived shortly there after and I had a pulse back before my truck went enroute to the Hospital. This man is still alive today and this happened 7 years ago. Now my personal opinion is LET ME BE! DO NOT VIOLATE MY BODY WITH TUBES VENTS OR ANYTHING! CPR when done properly is brutal and demeaning to the patient and the family. Let me die with dignity! I have always joked about getting a tattoo on my chest with a no CPR symbol..But that is just my 2 cents. Later Rodger |

Rock, I agree about heart attacks. I skipped details. In the instance I mentioned, he had three previously and his heart was working at 20%. It just stopped, no clutching, he just dropped, and the ten minutes mentioned was simply the time spent reviving, it was longer overall. With enough electricity, any muscle can be jolted enough to begin again, for a short while. Nothing operated "on its own" at the hospital. Yes though, efforts at reviving any heart attack are worth it. |
