Title: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Biker on Jan 22nd, 2005, 9:37am I figured I would just throw this out . Kinda wonderin if anyone would be interested in doing some activity while meeting and greeting. Hows taking a whitewater raft run and primitiave camping sound?? Plenty of opportunities to get stressed and call in the beast. Rock climbing, rafting, caving, and outdoor sleeping. May and June has fairly good water, and its kinda warm too. How does the New River in West Virginia sound to y'all??? |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 22nd, 2005, 10:14am We hit the Cheat every few years. On some state park we rent out a lodge for the weekend. Sleeps many many people. Fun times. Nobody else around for miles, which is kinda pleasant. Would be a nice CH gathering. |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by taraann on Jan 22nd, 2005, 11:15am We LOVE camping! Never done whitewater rafting though, but have always been interested in trying it out. Sounds fun! Hey Rock, camping is NOT camping unless you are in a tent or under the stars! ;) |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Donna_D. on Jan 22nd, 2005, 11:25am Now there is an idea! If my life can settle down some I would LOVE to go...I am an experienced camper, canoer, rafter, and one helluva campfire cook.... ....but I clean no fishes....that's is out of my job description! DD |
||
Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 22nd, 2005, 11:26am Agreed Tara... but nature usually conspires to trash any well-planned large-scale outdoor gathering (rain, storms, locust swarms). We have found that the lodge works pretty well. It is pretty bare inside... a few rooms, then a bunch of bare racks to toss sleeping bags onto upstairs. You still have the woods, fires, beer, dirt, beer... and many of us bring tents anyway... dragging the sleeping bags into the lodge only after the downpour begins. |
||
Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by taraann on Jan 22nd, 2005, 11:36am Lol seems everytime we go camping it rains. We learned quick to always come prepared with tarps, and how to prevent the tent from becoming a river bed (I remember one time waking up in a HUGE puddle of water, brrrrr that was a cold night!) But good point about a lodge and tents! We didnt get a chance to go camping at all this past year. My kids LOVE it. We've been taking them since before they were walking (given it was a warm night) Hey Donna that would be cool if you could come, our kids would prolly have a blast together! |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Woobie on Jan 22nd, 2005, 12:18pm OK - i KNOW ramon would LOVE that.... and that Lodge sounds like PORCH to me....... Sounds like a good time!!!! have tent - will travel! ;;D tina |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Biker on Jan 22nd, 2005, 1:54pm Thats quite a positive reply from some. Shall I look into it, or do you wish to do it on your own? Its the rafting companies that supply the equipment---and the shack if you wish. Companies that come to mind are ACE American and Canadian Expeditions. Class IV river runners. I believe they both have shacks to rent. In my younger years, I was a raft guide. I got kinda tired of doing that and went into yaks and boogie boards. That was before I got CH. Twas a right good time befoe AIDS became available. Fun years. Still, every once in a while, I gotta get a river fix. I have never rented a shack, but I saw ACE building some when I retired from the position. There were 6 whitewater companies when I began my whitewater carreer. Now there are over 20. I think I guided for most. I do not guide anymore. I quickly grew tired of the schedule. I only lasted 15 years as a guide. I got too old to be attractive to the young gals. Oh my""""" The river stays the same. Water never changes. I have ran the Cheat (colder than I wish to swim in), the Gauley (26 miles of exciting drop) Other rivers in the North Americian content, and have had fun. The New River will get ya wet, perhaps a bit chilly, and has capatived my personal love for water. It is just a thought for the moment----but I kinda thought as a Clusterhead, it would be kinda nice to meet other cluster folk while doing some activity. There are hotels (holiday Inn) and motels around for the wimpy city folks. There is a choice of food in the area during the summer. Whatever company is decided upon (most have primitave camping) has showers. If someone is demanding a State Park, there is Babcock State Park----but they run out of hot water real fast. It was just a thought. I figured it would be better to have something to do instead, of hanging around some hotel in some city. I figure it would be about the same cost to do something exciting as it would be to spend a weekend in some building. The reservations (if y'all choose to take the time) are not currently made. Please-----don't choose July 4th. Water is too low to have a wide eyed experience. I personally like to run the New in May, but its kinda chilly then. |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Kirk on Jan 22nd, 2005, 4:34pm How about Hell's Canyon on the Snake River or The Deschutes River. Might be able to get a little skiing in on Mt Hood at the same time if its in May. Wind Surfing on the Columbia River at Hood River would be close by. Salmon fishing is going on that time of year also. |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by kimh on Jan 22nd, 2005, 6:32pm Welp, As far as the nipples go, colder the better (agin ain't easy). LOL. Hey i've met a few clusterheads and we always planned a collective challenge together. I'd choose that anyday over the porch. It's a sharing experience together that cuts through the porch lite dimmers. ya walk away a winner every time no matter what and it's great to see folks from assorted places work as a team. I have never seen nipples point downward yet***on me or anyone else ;) hoohaw let's do it ;;D |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by OneEyeBlind on Jan 22nd, 2005, 10:52pm I'm game. My hubby for sure won't come though. After going through the "washing machine" on the Yuc ...... and then a few other pitfalls, he said (with knees bleeding), "don't ever even ask again." LOL. They just yelled me on for the rest of the trip, "Bring him home mountain mama !". Keep me out of a shredder with an inexperienced boy ! The only thing I would caution is that you should pick a river that isn't too high a class. While some might be interested, I would hate to see anyone go in and not come out ! Count me in though. Always up for some outdoor fun ! |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by BobG on Jan 23rd, 2005, 8:14am Rafting? I’m in! I love roughin' it. ::) As long as it’s in a gondola along the canal through the casino of the Venetian Hotel in Vegas. As for primitive camping, they have that too. You can get a 'primitive' (aka cheap) room for only $250 (per night). Tax and tip not included. |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Biker on Jan 23rd, 2005, 10:27am The state stocks alot of streams with trout in the spring and fall. There have been trout taken from the New, but its pretty warm for them. Mostly bass in that river. Looking at the trusty Brownie Calendar, the weekend of June 4th&5th is suppose to have fair weather in the area. Check out the link. http://www.aceraft.com/ |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Biker on Jan 24th, 2005, 10:19am The Cheat is cold and unperdictible. I can go from an easy run to an intense run within a few hours. Since the 85 flood, when the rocks moved around, the Devil's Trap turned into the Clycletron, with a fairly nasty hole at the bottom of that nightmare. It has been ran, it has also become a major source carniage that makes for some great photo shots. The cheat is one of the few natural rivers left. It has a large watershead area. If it rains in the mountains, there is water. If it doesnt rain, the Cheat Canyon is a rock garden. Its mostly ran during the snow melt. March, April, May. If there is a heavy downpour upstream, the Cheat can change from a mellow 3ft. to over 7 ft. in just a few hours. Commericial cut off use to be 4ft. and rising, or 5 ft. and dropping. I have seen it go from 2ft. up to 6ft. while on a trip. Yikes!!!!!!!! The New is a big teddybear. Yea, there are some fairly large drops, even a few class 5 rapids but at the bottom of each drop is a pool that gives ya time to recover. Its a good run for both the experinced and first timers. The outdoor center has plenty of activities to keep folks entertained if they choose not to run the river. I am not trying to sell a trip, I have long ago retired from the outdoor recreation field, yet I still get down that way and have a little fun now and again. With the current response, I will check into pricing, then probally post it in the window about meetings and gatherings. |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by Biker on Jan 24th, 2005, 11:02am Here is the scoop, Saturday trip on the river is 94 bucks a person. Every other day of the week is 89 bucks a person. Discounts do apply according to the numbers involved. The larger the numbers, the more discount. Primitave camping (with access to showers) is 10 bucks a night per person. There are a few rentable lodges the largest which will sleep up to 16 people. That cost is 275 per night for the first 6 people. Add 20 bucks a person over 6. Thats for each night folks. The Holiday Inn in Oak Hill sounds less expensive to me. The person who arranges the large group discounts was not available today due to the snow. But I did find that it is possible to make an open reservation, then everyone can call in to secure their spot on a raft, and sleeping arrangements. June 4th sound good? The late morning trip?? |

Title: Re: Anyone into Whitewater meet&greet? Post by catlind on Jan 24th, 2005, 7:32pm I must publicly announce that I will not be in attendance. You see, Clark is a meteorologist, and if you plan an outdoor event, and you have any friends or immediate family of a meteorologist agree to attend, it is guaranteed that you will have bad weather.
