Title: Request for a Day Off...
Post by Langa on Jan 20th, 2005, 11:43am
I sent my boss an email requesting a day off, and this is what he replied with...

So, you want the day off?!!

Let's take a moment to look at what you are asking for.

There are 365 days a year available for work.

There are 52 weeks per year,

of which you already have 2 days off each weekend,

leaving 261 days left available for work.

Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, that accounts for 170 days,

there are 91 days left available for work.

You spend 30 minutes each day on breaks,

that accounts for 23 days each year,

leaving 68 days available for work.

You spend 1 hour a day at lunch,

that accounts for another 46 days per year,

leaving 22 days available for work.

You spend 2 days per year on sick leave,

leaving 20 days available for work,

You take 9 holidays per year,

leaving 11 days available for work.

You take 10 vacation days each year,

leaving only 1 day left available for work,

and NO WAY are you going to take that day off!!

So is this a NO?  I still don't know if I have that day off or not... :-/

The problem with his logic is that he is presuming a work day consists of 24 hours, it only consists of 8 hours.

I guess asking for a raise is out of the question too then, huh?  [smiley=laugh.gif]

uhhhhhh... bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!  wrong answer

In my world (currently the 6 /12 level of Dante's hell) a work day is a constantly variable number of hours that never fails to exceed the amount of waking hours I can muster.  And that's just my full time job, not the bar that I own and manage.  Right now, I think I'd be better off if the Earth's rotation slowed a bit so that the days were about 50 hours long.

Europeans handle time off and holidays differently for the most part. I think it's healthier most of the time.

What logic!  :-/

So, I am taking a day off work !!

Let's take a moment to look at what I am doing.

I come to work at 8am.

I leave work at 5pm.

I take 1 hour for lunch.

I actually work 8 hours.

I am taking a day off work.

There are 24 hours in a day.

Today is Monday.

See you on Friday.

Langa,

You can tell him that you're impressed by his numbers, especially coming from someone who manages to be an not a very nice person 24/7 which equates to 8,760 hours per year!

Tell him you have "Female Problems" which could be anything as long as you don't expand into details... and trust me, that's the magic word... he won't ask and probably apologize.
;)

Now that's what I would reply with. I like the smartass e-mail, just hope he was goofing around though.  :o

I had all last week off due to the La Conchita slide/hwy 101 closure.  This week Caltrans has decided that the only road out of town (the other 4 roads are closed due to mudslides) is unsafe, so the road has been reduced to a single lane.  Now my half hour commute can take up to 4 hours.  Another  week without pay would not be possible  :(

The good news is the surf is up, way up, and it is 80F.  Almost like summer.  The only problem is the rains washed a lot of crap (literally) into the ocean, yuk.

now THERE'S an incentive to stay up on the surfboard!

Tell him that the one day a year is taking up too much personal time, and you need that time to get personal stuff done in order to have enough time to work.
