Title: Condy
Post by Bob P on Jan 19th, 2005, 3:11pm
WASHINGTON  — The Senate Foreign Relations Commitee on Wednesday confirmed Condoleezza Rice (search) as the nation's next secretary of state by a vote of 16 to 2, sending her name to the full Senate for approval.

The two nay sayers were Barbara Boxer and John Kerry.  That tells me making her Sec o State was the right move!

Bob,

Women make good secretary's.  They can sit on your lap and all that good stuff.  They just don't make good bosses!

``I am really reluctant to try to put a timetable on that {the drawdown of US forces}, because I think the goal is to get the mission accomplished,'' Rice said Tuesday in confirmation hearings, ``and that means that the Iraqis have to be capable of some things before we lessen our own responsibility,'' she said.

I just hope the Iran Mission goes better than the Iraq Mission.

well, condi's a nice person and good piano player, but was one of the worst NSA chief's we've ever had.
IMHO

also....
"Forty-nine percent of 1,007 adult Americans said in phone interviews they believe Bush is a "uniter," according to the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Wednesday. Another 49 percent called him a "divider," and 2 percent had no opinion."

So we're pretty evenly divided on that, huh?

Sure, we can talk about Condy and her ineptness.
If Condy is so great, why did she ignore the threats that Osama Bin Laden wanted to hijack airplanes?
If Condy is so great, why did she spread the lies about Iraq having WMDs?  She said it was 100% FACT that Saddam has WMDs and was only 45 minutes away from firing nukes at the USA.
Condy said that the the PDB section entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike US" was way to vague to really do anything about?
If Condy is so great, why did she not mention the words "al quaeda" or Osama Bin Laden at all prior to 9/11?

All I have to say about this is that the woman could afford some braces.  What is she, the illegitimate child of David Letterman?  Crikey!

And BMonee... words of advice (ignore if you like)  If you are a clusterhead (as you claim, and I have no reason to assume otherwise) then you should have a little thicker skin by now.  People come here and often it takes them a while to 'understand' this place.  We have a lot of light-hearted ribbing, and we have some downright mean-spirited posts as well.  If you can learn to treat it like a family, then you might understand what I mean.  Families often have little (or big) blow ups, but in the end they are still family.  And family LOVES to never let you forget about the time you were an ass (we all have been there).

Relax.

Thank you FUBAR for your advice.
I have been suffering pretty badly for most of the past 36 hours from CH.  Sleep is getting scarce as I get a CH an hour after I go to sleep, and an hour before I wake up.
I have had strong ghosts, or lite CH all day so far.  I have sucked O2 2 times already today and it hasnt helped.
God damn I hate this.  Next week is gonna be a long week for me....prolly gonna work 50 to 55 hours.  I NEED recuperative sleep!!!!!

No I have not tried melatonin and plan to ask several questions in the medical treatment board later today.
Is melatonin just a sleep aid, or does it help to relieve the pain of the CH.  My CHs wake me up out of a deep sleep every night, so I think that if all melatonin does is help me to sleep, I will be wakened by the beast.  When the beast wakes up, there's no sleep for me.
So, my question, in short is, : Is the melatonin just a sleep aid, or does it help to fight the CH?
Thanks

I'd sure be careful taking TWO sleep inducing treatments at the same time - at the very least they might cancel each other out.
Melatonin is supposed to work on readjusting your circadian rhythm so that you can sleep.  Benadryl doesn't let you get into REM sleep.  I think you're playing with fire if you combine the two.  Try one or the other first to see if it helps you.
Melatonin did nothing for my hubby but I don't think he stayed on it long enough to give it a fair chance.  It made him worse for first two days - way worse - but it has really helped a lot of people here.
Benadryl OR Gravol (Dramamine in the States) will get him through the night unattacked every time.

It is a sleep aid, and it does not ease the pain of ch, it ELIMINATES the night time attacks for a lot of people.

Langa, when you say "correctly", what do you mean?
I have a regulator that only goes to 8LPM flow, and i have a nose piece with no hydrator.  I put the thing in my nose (which sometimes is stuffed up), and begin breathing deeply.  Most of the time, O2 does help me a lot.  Oh, and I typically use it for about 15 minutes to 30 minutes.  My doc's instructions are to use it for 30 mins.
Does that sound right?  Is there anything you do differently?
Thanks

Melatonin is a substance produced naturally by your body when it's time for sleep. Taking additional melatonin helps people to fall more deeply asleep in a shorter amount of time. Exactly why it works, I don't know. It is not an analgesic, and does not relieve pain, but some people have said that it keeps them from getting hit at night.

I tried it, last cycle. It didn't make a bit of difference, except in the morning, I felt like I'd been run over by a bus. (and looked like it to, but then, that's the way I always look...) LOL

Anyway... Give it a shot. Your mileage may vary.

Post by Bob P on Jan 20th, 2005, 4:13pm
Dude, you got the wrong O2 setup.  8 lpm may work but you need to get rid of the nose canula and get a non-rebreather mask.

Title: Re: Condy
Post by Langa on Jan 20th, 2005, 4:16pm
BMonee, 8LPM was too low for me and for most of us I think, 12LPM and higher worked for me and as BobP said, you need a non-rebreather mask.

Regarding the Melatonin, time release, I think works better.  I know that Melatonin is a REM Sleep Inhibitor.

Langa

Also, on 12LPM, I only needed to use the oxygen for a maximum of 20 minutes with good results.

Title: Re: Condy
Post by vig on Jan 20th, 2005, 4:17pm
I had mixed results with Melatonin.
Sometimes it helped, sometimes I believe, it made things worse.
Now I'm afraid to touch it.

No. It's not.  Dramamine and Benadryl are though. As I said, MORE reason not to combine the two.

Sleep-inducing effects of low doses of melatonin ingested in the evening
Clin Pharmacol Ther (U.S.) May 1995, 57 (5) p552-8,

We previously observed that low oral doses of melatonin given at noon increase blood melatonin concentrations to those normally occurring nocturnally and facilitate sleep onset, as assessed using and involuntary muscle relaxation test. In this study we examined the induction of polysomnographically recorded sleep by similar doses given later in the evening, close to the times of endogenous melatonin release and habitual sleep onset. Volunteers received the hormone (oral doses of 0.3 or 1.0 mg) or placebo at 6, 8, or 9 PM. Latencies to sleep onset, to stage 2 sleep, and to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep were measured polysomnographically. Either dose given at any of the three time points decreased sleep onset latency and latency to stage 2 sleep. Melatonin did not suppress REM sleep or delay its onset. Most volunteers could clearly distinguish between the effects of melatonin and those of placebo when the hormone was tested at 6 or 8 PM. Neither melatonin dose induced "hangover" effects, as assessed with mood and performance tests administered on the morning after treatment. These data provide new evidence that nocturnal melatonin secretion may be involved in physiologic sleep onset and that exogenous melatonin may be useful in treating insomnia.

O2 at that rate through a canula (nose thing) is completely useless to me.  You should see if you can get a high flow regulator and a non-rebreather mask (the O2 link tells you how)

Interesting... I'm mystified, then. On the evenings that I took melatonin, I felt awful, the next morning. I usually bounce right out of bed, and I am a morning person. On the mornings after taking melatonin, (even as little as 3mg), all I wanted to do was sleep, and it was all I could do to drag myself out of bed. Of course, maybe this isn't attributable to the melatonin, but rather, the sleep deprivation resulting from being hit with CH at night.

That's one thing I don't understand either Margi.  People keep saying the melatonin is an R.E.M. inhibitor, if that were true, why all of the vivid dreams?  Have to keep reminding myself none of us are doctors or pharmacists here.  ;)

could very well be, Jeep.  But I think I remember Mike saying he felt groggy too.  Again, could have been because he was SO sleep deprived when he finally did try it.

I've always understood that it promoted REM.  That's why I never understood why it helped with clusters.  But hey, I'm no doc either.  (although I think that most of us do a lot more research on clusters than most docs, especially having that visit with our neuro today!  ::))

It reminds me of the masks with the one-way valve that we carried on our belts, for ambulance runs and in the hospital, when we had to perform CPR. The inflatable portion would seal around the patient's mouth and nose, and the one-way valve kept the patient from throwing up in your mouth.
