Title: Update "medical info" ?
Post by BikerBob on Jan 17th, 2005, 1:40pm
Should the "medical info" page of this site be updated ?

When a newbie to CHs comes to this site, the first thing they see is the "new visitors" page, then the "medical info" page.

The "medical info" page starts with "A Neurologist that I saw once gave me some information to take home from one of her medical books.  To this day, it is still the BEST information that I have ever seen on Cluster Headaches... it's awesome!"

The "Treatment" section of the medical info page has sections for The Acute Attack and Prophylaxis. The Acute Attack section does not mention the triptans: sumatriptan (Imitrex) and zolmitriptan (Zomig). The prophylaxis section does not mention Topomax.

If I were a newbie to CHs and read that, I would go to a doctor seeking Ergotamine as treatment for both the acute attack and as a prophylactic because it's listed first in each section. If the doctor didn't know much about CHs that's what he would prescribe.  I wouldn't even consider Verapamil because it's only briefly mentioned as the 8th out of 9 prophylactics, and I wouldn't know about the triptans.

Should the treatments be listed in order of effectiveness with the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Bob,

I'm not saying things could use an update however,
DHE is what is most effective for me.

Verap...I can't take
Triptans....don't work for long

I think an update WOULD be good but finding what works best for ALL would be difficult, I would think.

I am most likely in the minority with what works, but just my thoughts on the overall scheme of things.

Most importantly, we need to have a presence for newbies that welcomes them and educates them on the current meds available...all of them.

There is a medication survey (link to left<==) to show what is most effective and what the options are.  I think that is the second place I would look to find more effective info on meds.  I would hate to think the person would stop at the first page.
