Title: Where are your priorities???? Post by medic1852 on Jan 17th, 2005, 10:44am [smiley=mad.gif] Well I am going to rant and rave for a minute. Our society is so screwed up. I was on Fox news site and last night the Golden Globes was on. Now don’t get me wrong I enjoy entertainment just as much as the next guy. But we as a society put a higher price on our entertainment than we do our safety and health. We pay our entertainers (in mid evil times a jester or slaves) more than we do our local police officer (most make 8 to 10 dollars and hour). In sports an athlete pisses and moans if they cant get a contract to make millions of dollars. Yet we knuckle under and pay what they want so we can sit back on our fat Asses and be entertained. Did you know that most of the soldiers who fight to defend our way of life make below minimum wage? There are some with families who use food stamps so that they may feed their families. We need to tell our government and entertainers enough is enough, and put the power and income back in the hands of the workingman. Hell vote me next election for president and me and Jonny will be my vice we will straighten out the economy and put a boot in congress and the senates ass to get this country straitened out. Sorry I will calm down now I just get sick and tired of the shit that the workingman has to put up with. [smiley=twocents.gif] |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by guesst on Jan 17th, 2005, 10:59am We need a "social cleansing" and our very own Bastille Day here. But there aren't enough of "smart" people out there to do it. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by medic1852 on Jan 17th, 2005, 11:04am I agree totally, and there are folks smart enough to do it. But the power lies with the man with the biggest wallet. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Jeepgun on Jan 17th, 2005, 11:19am The solution is pretty simple: 1. Pull TV or entertainment center out from wall. 2. Reach behind and down until you find where it plugs in. 3. Pull firmly. 4. Replace TV or entertainment center. 5. Pick up a book, make something with your hands, practice a musical instrument, spend time with your family or a loved one. Rinse & repeat as necessary. |

Ok Frank that is nice warm and fuzzy, makes me want to hug a bunny. But how does this solve the problem of the working man, how does this stop the goverment from bending us over and saying it is just a small tax increase and you dont need the good paying job anyways. But if it will help I will go run through a feild singing the Sound of Music and hug a bunny. [smiley=bash.gif] [smiley=bunnybash.gif] |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Jeepgun on Jan 17th, 2005, 11:33am Easy, big guy... I wasn't addressing that aspect of your post. My gripe is with the "entertainment industry," and the "professional" athletes. I'm just saying that I decided to boycott the whole mess, and life has been a lot nicer, since then. I'll work on that tax thing and wages, if everyone will elect me to the position of Almighty God. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by nani on Jan 17th, 2005, 12:01pm This society is so screwed up, I can't even begin to comment on it. I will say this...we pay athletes all this money and they end up being role models to kids who need one. Half the time, they are so incredibly undeserving of that status. Then we can't find enough money to pay our teachers worth a damn.... >:( |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by notseinfeld on Jan 17th, 2005, 12:17pm This is the United States of America. A pretty cool place to live wouldn't ya say? We are the most philanthropic, economically & militarily powerful country in the world. Does anyone think that this is by luck? Or chance? Nah. We're this way because of Capitalism. It's not perfect but indeed it beats the alternative. If a player of any sport makes 12mil a year (live Vick or whoever here in atlanta) it's because of all the the folks who are willing to pay $25.00 for a seat or sit glued to the TV as the Neilson ratings determine the advertising charges. Plus that nice Steelers hat you're wearing or the sports jersey-- The power is in your wallet, and your wallet only. It's a powerful message but sadly, one that's seldom used. I wouldn't consider 'redistribution of wealth' as a proper function of government no matter how imbalanced a system seems. While I agree it's a tragedy that military personnel receive such little pay it's not because the money is being redirected to sports figures, or entertainers. Somewhere around 80% of American Joes walking the street (present Pittsburg Joe excluded) cannot name their 2 senators or congressman. Horrifying. I don't hold much hope that they'll be able to stick with general economics or the self-restraint not to charge those game tickets on credit cards. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by karma on Jan 17th, 2005, 12:22pm You cannot compare big business and big government. YOU fund big business by the choices YOU make. You fund goverment by paying taxes. If you feel that strongly about the imbalance then sell all your entertainment devices and donate to your local police fund or V.A. and organize others to do the same. Then go down to the local IRS office and offer to pay an additional 50% more in taxes and organize others to do the same. Good Luck |

Well another nice fuzzy thought. [smiley=bunnybash.gif] Let me educate you a little about who I am. I am an under paid Paramedic, I am also a "VOLUNTEER" fire Fighter, volunteer being the key word. I do continueing education for Fire Fighters, EMT's and Paramedics, so that they can keep their certification, I also do public education for schoold and the local health department to include CPR and basic first aid. I do this for no cost to the public only to myself. The problem in my veiw is in the goverment. But that is just me. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by sandie99 on Jan 17th, 2005, 12:51pm You raise a good point indeed. Aguess we're paying those 'stars' so that we can have our escape from the reality? But, at least here in Finland actors and singers don't get paid that much than they do back there in America. Still nurses and firemen and other important people get paid less than they should... |

I am not advocating a redistribution of wealth. that would be stupid. I just say that we as americans need to adjust our priorities. Look at our goverment look at who we elect and what they actually do while in office. Look at how they are paid and what they are paid to be our servants. Look at their Health care benifits. It is insane. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Lizzie2 on Jan 17th, 2005, 1:08pm Just to play devil's advocate because I love to... My brother was a sports player. Straight through most of college, but injury forced him to get out of the "pro" plan. I spoke with an anatomy lab professor about this once. He said...the retirement age is like 35 for many professionals. So...they ask for millions but give their body to the sport and are wiped in 10 years. So do they deserve to be paid well for the hell they cause their bodies? I dunno... Millions is still more, and I cause hell on my body by being a nurse! Nobody will ever sign me a million dollar contract for one year of nursing! Life in these United States...... interesting..... Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 17th, 2005, 3:01pm Interesting discussion, and lots could be better about the USA, yet the simple fact remains that our middle and lower classes live an order of magnitude better than 90% of those in the known universe. LOL Medic... you have a Playstation... that implies that you have a TV and electricity and the disposable income to puchase PS games and TIME... time not spent gathering food or patching together shelter. Congrats... you live better than 90% of the others on this planet. ;;D And please be careful not to complain about how much civil servants make in the same thread that you holler about tax increases. ;;D /content |

Your professor is a nut case! The millionire sports figures ask for millions because they know the team owners can afford it. They team owners just have to raise the ticket, parking, popcorn, beer, T-shirt, etc prices. The rabid sports fan is gullible enough to pay any price to see someone elses hero get smacked around. The more smacking that happens the more big advertisers want in and they are willing to pay the big bucks for commericial time. And to pay for the high priced commericials the big advertisers just raise the price of their product. Then even the person that has no interest in sports has to help pay for the millionires on the field. Don't ya just love American capitalism? As for the "they deserve to be paid well for the hell they cause their bodies?" reason..........that's all public relations. It's the old "Please feel sorry for me. I did it all for you. I'm the victim". That's big time BS. Nobody forced any player to play the game. They did it all on their own. |

Well that was sarcasm...I dont own a play-station just using it as an example of a GAME. As far as the TAX increase I dont have a problem paying taxes IF they are used the way they should be, I have a big problem with senators and congressmen voting their own pay raises and increasing thier benifit package. While the people who vote them in tighten their belts and suck it up. As for the civil servant that I am concerned about fire police EMS, when most of them work other or more than one job to make ends meet is a crying shame. Then you have atheltes threating a strike because they cant live off 2 mill a year. Cry me a river. Dont get me started again I was starting to calm down. [smiley=bash.gif] |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 17th, 2005, 3:10pm I am all for the entertainers/players being paid whatever the market can support, but as BobG indicated it is crossing a bit of a line. My beef is taxpayer funding of sports venues. Man... that pisses me off. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Rock_Lobster on Jan 17th, 2005, 3:13pm Agreed Medic. Our mutual problem is that 90% of voters are fucking idiots, as NotS indicated. All that hype about the presidential election, when in reality the congressional elections are, in aggregate, far more important. I -despise- most of the shit that comes from congress. |

woooo hoooo someone gets it....we need to look at this. It is a proven fact that the person who can AFFORD the best speech writer, best campaign manager, comercial time wins the election. No one ever votes for Tommy tomatoe head that they have never heard of. Remeber the movie where Eddie Murphy got elected to congress just because his name was the same as the deceiced incumbant. That is exactly how the US citizen vote. They know the name and nothing about the person and cast their ballot, like a bunch of sheep off to the slaughter. |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Lizzie2 on Jan 17th, 2005, 6:17pm Well I think many of you know that my first degree was spent paying Penn State University a whole lot of money yearly to graduate with a Bactchelor of Music in Piano Performance. After a few years, I wound up getting a scholarship for $550 a semester. My brother got around $3000 a SEMESTER to play soccer. Yes it's a game. I play a piano. I spend hours memorizing, learning, etc....a very technical skill and something regarded as a masterpiece for hundreds of years. At the same time, sometimes when I'm at home I ask my brother not to play the guitar. He says that I play the piano before he woke up or after he went to bed and yet he never yells at me. I say...I freaking went to college for it...my role with the piano is NOT THE SAME as your role at the guitar. Nobody in my family understands when I say that. But then, they've always been the athletes...and I've been the musician. And I also took a semester off because I had tendonitis in my right arm. My great uncle got tendonitis from playing super nintendo! ;) Damn it all to hell for sacrificing our bodies for one thing or another! Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Kris_in_SJ on Jan 17th, 2005, 8:49pm Wow, this thread is spreading outward to strange and wonderful places. I seem to remember from a thread back in September that all the liberals were going to move to New England and secede from the nation. Is that option still open? I'm there - as long as we don't have to pay taxes, or watch women with artificially-enhanced breasts strut around in designer dresses, or watch steroid-enhanced athletes prove their superiority as role-models for our children! Medic - I have been an underpaid (at the time) ER nurse, a non-profit executive director (always underpaid), and now an independent contractor (sometimes paid). I understand where you're coming from. There's no good answer, my friend. I sure wish there was .... Kris |

Title: Re: Where are your priorities???? Post by Charlie on Jan 18th, 2005, 2:58am Entertainers have been paid well here forever. I read that John Wilkes Booth was making a hell of pile at the time. It's not new. It didn't improve his disposition though. It is new for professional athletes. For most of the last century, Major League baseball players worked second jobs off season to make ends meet because they were locked in contracts that would make a feudal lord proud. Curt Flood really opened it up and wham..... This doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as the bullshit and out and out lies we put up with about health care and insurance. It's criminal. Tell you what; I'll shut up when I have the same heath plan as retired Congressmen. My county and city have cut back on things like fire departments and police departments. More tax cuts are what we need along with the Roman circus inaugural this week. I suppose that I shouldn't complain. After all, on Thursday, my local bus service will be cut back so much that not only will I not be able to shop on Saturdays, the last daily run will be at 3:15 PM. Ain't that gonna be handy? Who is hurt by this? The poor and hndicapped. Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, a man certainly not known for liberal views, said that one does not pull out the wheelchairs from handicapped children to try to pay for Medicaid. I'm with him. How horrible it would be if those handy dandy tax cuts weren't around. The thing is that it's gone so far off the scale. I've never seen such greed. No Andrew Carnegies on the horizon. Charlie |
