Title: Mouse Hell!
Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Jan 14th, 2005, 5:26pm
Help - all you computer smart folks.

The stupid mouse on my stupid computer is behaving like it's deranged (well, hmmm - it is after all my mouse and my computer - so that's likely fitting!)

It won't do what I want it to do - won't move to where I want it to be and is generally being non-compliant with my wishes.  Oh hell - now it sounds like a husband.

Now that was pretty nervy of me 'cause I'm hoping that some of those same "husband" types will come to my aid.

Do I just junk this thing and buy a new one?

Thank you (smiling sheepishly)
Carol

Do you have a ball mouse or an optical mouse?

If you have a ball mouse, open the back of it (usually twist or snap the hunk of plastic holding the ball in), and have a look see.

You will find that the rollers... either 2 or 3 of them... are coated with shit.  That is because you eat at your PC too much.  Not really... but that is what it looks like.

Use tweezers to get the worst of it off, then the same to scrape the tough stuff off the rollers.

Take all the shit you just extracted from your mouse and roll it into a little ball.  Eat it.  Tastes like pizza.

If you have an optical mouse, just make sure the light portal is clean.

I get that crap in my mouse rollers, too. It's from the mouse pad I use...it has a little bump thing for my wrist.
always have to clean it.   :-/

It helps sometimes when you get the ball out of the mouse, rub it on your bluejeans real hard to take the sheen off of it and rough it up a little.

Mice seem to behave better when you threaten to take their balls out!

Carol,

I was working with a frustratingly unresponsive mouse which was making my wrist hurt, like I was getting carpal tunnel or something.  The cleaning is always helpful but mine was so old, I decided to buy a new mouse and switched hands I use it with and all the wrist pain vanished in time.

That was my computer speed update plan I had been envisioning for several years.   :)    8)

Chunk it and go buy a Microsoft (NO ROLLER) mouse. It's flat on the bottom, has a cute little red light and is easy to install (I did it without help and you know I'm totally computer illerate). It's flat on the bottom with no ball to get dirty or roughed up.

Is it a wireless mouse?  If so, perhaps it needs resynched with the base unit, something is interfering with the signal, or  it needs charging.  If it's not wireless, clean the ball, and check to make sure its plugged correctly on the back of the computer... If it still don't work, it may need replaced.  Logitech makes some damn good optical mouses in my opinion.

The one left in the house, by the puter, is behaving nicely.

Thanks for all the help folks.  Took the thing apart and cleaned it as suggested - finally went and bought a new one.

Like Barb indicated - little red light on the bottom - never needs to be cleaned and not overly expensive I don't think.

Now, I'm all ready to play again!

I just got plain old sick and tired of cleaning them rod looking things the ball rides on.

I bought a Logitech cordless optical mouse. I love it. The only problem is battries only last 5-6 weeks. No big deal I stock up now.

A new mouse is cheap. :)
