Title: Favorite Big (Little) Movies
Post by kimh on Jan 14th, 2005, 7:22am
Kay.  Day two home with sick kids ;;D lol.  Watching a lot of tv lately ::)

What are some of your favorite movies that are NOT of the "blockbuster" vein?  A little movie that packs a HUGE punch?

Yesterday i watched "A Home Of Our Own" with Kathy Bates.  It was a gem**** :)

For me Kim...I would recommend the original "Ocean's 11" with the Rat Pack.

May be in the "Blockbuster vein"....but still a great movie.

Hope the little ones feel better real soon.

Jimmy

Oh, I just loved Ocean's 11! I went to see 12, too...

But one non Blockbuster which I loved was called "Get Well Soon", it has Courteney Cox in it and dialogue which I adore. It's a comedy.

Then there's "The Hollow", which is a horror film.

I wish "get well soon" to your kids! :)

Kimsly,

"The Other Sister" was a surprising deviation from what I would normally watch, that I really liked.

sorta mainstream but still missed by most ... "Amelie"

And an oldie but goldie that goes well with the title of this thread ... "Little Big Man" - it's almost old enough now to be "non-mainstream".  :D

There is a newer movie that I think is called "Below." It's about a WWII US submarine that picks up some surviors in the Atlantic. Everybody aboard soon discovers the thing is haunted. Nice ending too. It's not a battle flick nor is it goofy or a bloody mess.  I've only seen it on cable so far.

I can watch "Pleasantville" over and over too.

Pleasantville is wonderful!
Ditto for Pay It Forward.

My boys loved the movies: "Secondhand Lions" and "Holes" when they're stuck at home. Of course, "The Princess Bride" is a main stay.

Hey Thanks All :)

Charlie, i'm going to see about that "Below" movie!  Sounds kewl.

By Little movies that pack a punch, i meant a flick that is unassuming.  You watch this Little movie and it moves you inside.  Makes you think about things, touches your spirit.

Here is another one:  "Door To Door" starring William H. Macy.  Very GOOD!

I also watched a movie a while back about a guy who becomes a "music therapist" in a nursing home and befriends a "difficult" patient who turns out to be a once-well known blues-jazz singer.  They end up helping eachother overcome heartbreak and disappointments of the past.  Wish i could remember the name of it ::)  The lady that plays the jazz singer is the actress who played the housekeeper in the tv series "The Jeffersons"????..........

Those small ensambles = PRICELESS! :)

My friends always bust my balls because I dig "chick flicks" My wife always wants to see action adventure or Scifi and I want to be moved lol

About a Boy & Love Actually are movies I can watch over and over for a laugh and a Sigh ;)

Very Sweet movies and simplistic

Marla Gibbs.  And the movie you are thinking of is "Stanley's Gig".

Good titles, all. Wish my head didn't hurt so much or I'd be able to think of a few suggestions, too.

'The Gods Must Be Crazy"

I always loved the deranged magic of the cult classic "Harold And Maude." A very different movie indeed. Bud Cort plays a young man who is a depressed attention seeker who falls in love with a much older woman, Ruth Gordon. This movie was considered very racy for its time.

"Get Crazy" with Malcolm McDowell is a riot! It takes place at a new years bash in '83 at a concert club trying to keep its doors open while Ed Begley Jr. is trying to take the club away from the owner. Definitely a wild movie. One funny thing is, every band in the movie does a rendition of a song called "Rock n Roll Hootchie Woman." Also, John Densmore (The Doors) plays Malcolm's drummer in his band, and the drum solo he does is too much! If you can find this movie anywhere (It's not on DVD), it is worth a view.

"Home Movies" with Nancy Allen, Gerritt Graham and Keith Gordon. It's a pretty obscure early 80's flick, and insanely funny! Because those who know... know!

"Jeffrey"  a gay comedy with Stephen Weber, Michael Weiss, Sigourney Weaver, and Patrick Stewart (Capt Piquard from Star Trek) as a totally flambouyant friend of Jeffrey's. There are so many twisted things in this movie, like Mother Theresa playing piano while smoking a cig, or Jeffrey's parents talking to him on the phone about sex.

"Strangeland" with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister as the sadistic Captain Howdy. A very cool underground horror movie.

"Rock N Roll High School" - I first saw this when I was 11 years old, and it was my introduction to the Ramones. A very campy, cheesy, funny movie.

Lots of cool underground movies out there. Too many to list.

Peace,
CD

Ok, Supertroopers was a joke, I was kidding. ;;D

In all seriousness, my favorite movies growing up that have carried me through adult life keeping me in awe and wonder are:

"Labyrinth"
"Neverending Story"
"The Last Starfighter"
"Goonies"
"Real Genius"

and more known movies:

"Raiders of the Lost Ark"
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"

These movies I can watch over and over again and never get bored of them.

I love both of those movies. "Real Genius" is a great movie. Val Kilmer is brilliant in every movie he does, but this is one of my faves from him.

"I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates when he said 'I drank what?'"

"Kent put his name on his license plate"
"My mother does the same thing to my underwear"
"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?"

Alot of the above are favorites of mine

However, if the sick kids are napping and you don't mind reading subtitles, "Babbette's Feast" is a total gem  Won an Academy Award some years back for best foreign film.

It will truly make your heart soar!
