Title: DSL installation question
Post by don on Dec 30th, 2004, 5:02pm
When I get home I will be installing a DSL kit in my puter.

What am I in for?

How do I know if I have an ethernet card?

If I dont and I install the kit can I still get on line until I go get one?

Post by eddie on Dec 30th, 2004, 5:07pm
you are gonna buy it and get a disk with it
but you should know if you have one
you will be glad you have it

I agree with Jonny... RTFM... A few things to consider though... Is it a USB DSL "modem"?  If it is... All you'll need is a USB port in your 'puter.  Is it a PCI DSL "modem"?  You'll need to open the 'puter case, and install it into a spare PCI slot, but you shouldn't need an ethernet card.  Either case, follow the instructions to install it, and you should be ok.

Now... For an external, ethernet DSL "modem"... Look at the back of your 'puter.  Look for a port that looks like a big phone line port (It'll be a slightly smaller than twice the size of a normal phone line port.)  If you don't have one, you'll have to install an ethernet adapter before you can install the DSL kit.  If the kit doesn't include one, you can purchase one at an office supply or computer supply store (Staples, Office Max, etc...) or even Wal-Mart maybe.  It shouldn't cost too much, although many stores sell them at overly inflated prices.  Just follow the instructions that come with the adapter.  Good luck!

Dunno - do you have any hair left? If yes - you may not soon. Strongly recommend you aqcuire a 12 year old to help.

Look at the back of your machine. If there is something that looks like a telephone jack - only larger (8 wires instead of 4) then you have one. If not - go to Radio Shack or Comp-USA or Staples and buy one. Another option is a USB adapter. If you have a USB port available you can convert it to accept an ethernet connection.

Not with the DSL. If you still have a dial up connection - you will be able to use that until you reconfigure your system to use the DSL.

Good Luck!

DSL sucks, trade it in for a cable connection, 4-5 times faster.

The kit looks simple enough. External modem.

But I dont have an ethernet adaptor so I assume I dont have an ethernet card either.

Really, Let me check,

They want $10,000 to run a cable line to my house,

Then they want to charge me $15 more a month than my DSL cost.

I think I will stick with my DSL, it maybe slow but I can still pull in a 700 MB ISO in a night.

Don,
My Modem has both eithernet and USB, if you don't have eithernet, get it, and get a broad band router, then not only can all your computers go online, but you won't be getting hit with all those windows worms.

As I understand it Don lives right in the middle of Boston, therefore your argument ($10,000) is moot. Cable is about 15.00 mo more but when downloading it makes DSL seem like 56K.

Dear Don,

Despite that fact that you may not be computer savvy, you must have a ISP that's providing you with the kit.  Am I right?  After all, you can't have a DSL without the ISP.

This means that somewhere out there, there is a technical support team just waiting to help you.  Of course, they might not speak English, but they will apologize 1,000,000 times for not being able to answer your questions in a language you understand.

BTW - if you have a computer purchased within the last few years, it should have an ethernet card built in.

I have cable but its for the entire house and not in my name. Too much hassle.

Isp and kit provider is ATT.

If there is no ethernet adaptor I assume there is no card either.

on the other hand:

"Of course, they (RJ)  might not speak English, but they (he) will apologize 1,000,000 times for not being able to answer your questions in a language you understand. "

...and then he will insult your intelligence by telling you to "Re-boot, ya dumbass!!"

Cable vs DSL

http://tinyurl.com/6jcln

So which service is faster, cable modem or DSL? No single answer will suffice for everyone. Cable's theoretical bandwidth limits are higher (but you'll never reach them), and because it's not dependent on distance from a central office, it's more consistent from user to user--unless your next-door neighbor is Blackbeard the MP3 pirate. With DSL, you'll generally get higher speeds the closer you live to the phone company's central office.

...

You thought Bush vs. Gore in 2000 was a squeaker? Cable vs. DSL is even closer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I have used both in more than one city and had varying results.  At one time I had both (working from home) and cable was faster at certain times of day.  As noted above, the performance can depend on your neighbors' usage.

Other factors include how many users are using the same hub (DSL or cable) and how far you are from that hub. (DSL)

Currently, I have DSL because of the difference in price.  It is slightly slower when downloading but I don't have the typical slowdown between 5PM and 9PM that I did with cable when a lot more users on that hub were getting home from work or school.

YMMV

How much faster can I expect the DSL to be over the 56K Dial up?

Its faster, just not fast like cable. If you have the extra 15 bucks a month its better than DSL. But hell you'll love DSL just the same because your going from dial up and haven't experienced cable yet. The best part about DSL is that you can still use your telephone to talk to jonny, and be zinging him online at the same time ;;D. <<<<<<<<<<that was a joke ;;D

Don,
The modem comes with an eithernet cord.  If you have a jack on the back of your pooter that it fits in, you're in business.  If not, you can buy an eithernet card for $10-$20 at any electronics place.

To install the card you need to have an empty PCI slot (look at the back of the pooter and see if there are any 1/2" x 4" blank metal dealies were the rest of your jacks are.  You just unplug your pooter, take the side off the case, remove the blank cover and plug the card into the mother board.  You now have eithernet.

A router is added protection for your pooter.  They run advanced firewalls.

But 98 sux bro, it was not until Windows 2000 that they moved the home computer edition of Windows to the posix kernel of NT.  I am no big MS fan, but Win XP plug and play finds every device I have ever thrown at it, including motion tracking devices, directional trackers, and multiple DOF input devices, not your everyday off-the-shelf hardware.

John, to each his own,

After spending a few weeks in XP I actually came close to throwing the laptop, at least in 98 I could understand what was going on, and could make it very stable. XP just seems to always fight me. I guess I will stick to Linux where things are simpler, if it doesn't work try something else, not reinstall drivers 3 times and poof it works for no reason.

Heh heh heh.

You speak of a USB Ethernet Adapter.

Know that...

There is USB1.0, 1.1 & 2.0.  Your piece of shit, er, I mean, system likely only supports USB1.0.  So make sure whatever USB ethernet adapter you pick up supports USB1.0... and that the drivers for it do not specifically exclude win98.

Or you could tell me the problem with your current ethernet card in a little bit more detail.

If this is a new card, make sure it doesn't say for PCI 2.1, if it does, it may not work with your machine, the best thing to do is go to your local computer shop and by a used 10/100 PCI eithernet adapter, or if you have USB. and the Modem takes it, then use that, you will need a install disk for the USB.

I will burn, and have your Disks in the mail tommorow.

BINGO! I think.

Ethernet 10/100 requirements are a 2.2 compliant PCI slot.

From what I'm hearing here I am only good for 1.0 ?

Yes PCI 2.2 won't work, you will need a PCI 2.0 card, a used one is probaby the best.

Paul is right.

But do not confuse what I was saying about USB1.0/1.1/2.0 and what Paul is saying about PCI2.0/2.2.  Same kinda issue, but a different issue.

I have an ancient Ethernet card sitting in front of me right now that I can send out.  But as Paul indicated, at any PC-building shop they probably have an old one they will let you have for $5.  Let me know.

I tried every available slot for the card. The system doesn't recognize an adaptor being present.

It is ovenighted, as of tomorrow AM.

Go download drivers for an ancient 3Com EtherLink III PCI... circa 1995...

Go here bitch...
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/searchbyproduct.jsp?path=download&search=3c590

Then click on Drivers under the 2nd one down...
this one...
3C590-TPO

Then I personally would try the one marked...
3C59XN.EXE

In exchange for this, I need you to send me pictures of you sucking my dick.

Dear Don,

After 4 pages and tons of advice, maybe it would be worth your while to visit the local Office Depot or Best Buy and get a puter for about $300 (less the rebate).  It will most likely have everything built in that you need.  The non-english speaking tech support people will thank you!

I absolutely agree!

"Kris == no fucking fun in FORTRAN."  And I have absolutely no fuckling idea what FORTRAN is!

In addition, I have absolutely no desire to learn!  However, I do bow deeply to those of you who know.  I think my brain works from the other side.

Thank You!

What the Hell made ya wanna learn that horrid language at that age?  I was 10010 when they tried to make me learn it, and it drove me halfway crazy.  Of course... It prolly wouldn't have been so bad if the school would've had any decent compilers.  Of course, I learned BASIC when I was 1000, for all the good it did me... LOL

Fortran @ 1100, Assembler & COBOL @ 1101.  I had a sweet sweet education.

Playing around in COBOL with DB2 in CICS/TS with some JAVA invokes right now Kirk.  Performance tuning for a client.  Easy peasy!

I sent Linux to Don today, are you going to send him XP?, whoops I forgot you would have to send him a whole new computer. I can't wait until Longhorn is released (hopefully before the end of the Decade) so I get to see what the NEW definition of Bloatware is.
