Title: getting a Job sucks!
Post by Karla on Dec 11th, 2004, 10:42pm
I have been on disability for 4 years now.  Going into my 5th year soon.  I spent the last 2 years looking for work.  No one would hire me because I had no current experinece.  Now I have spent the last year in college refreshing classes and new classes and no one will still hire me.  I am so sick of this game.  I finally feel better enough to work and I cant find a job as a computer programmer in the area where I live.  I have had several phone calls of interest over an hours drive away.  Yuk!  I would like to avoid that and stay local in Madison instead of driving to Milwaukee everyday.  I had one guy email me.  Then we talked by phone.  He said my expeirnece was perfect.  I was just what they were looking for.  Would I be intereste?!! YES!!!  Then he calls me back after setting up an interview and says I didn't see your employement gap. We can't hire you and hung up!  I was so $$^^%&$%^#$  [smiley=mad.gif] mad!  I hope I haven't just wasted a year of college trying to go back into a field I am screwed in.  Either to much experience or not enough because of the time gap.  Don't go on disability unless you can help it!  I couldn't help it!  I feel like I am  being punished now. :(

I'm with Ramon. Usually, you get a job because no one at the place you get the job at wanted it that bad in the first place.  They're usually not OPEN by accident.  Be careful what you wish for.  You could get lucky though.  It happened to me a couple of times.  The other times on the way out as I gave my notice I told my boss when asked what I was going to do, "Hey, I was looking for a job when I found this one and look what happened.  Couldn't turn out much worse."

That's a bummer Karla. Is your disability running out? If you still have time, might I suggest you volunteer somewhere? It's a way to get your foot back in the door of the working world. Some employers count it as experience. Just a thought. Good luck to you.

Karla,
Finding a job doing anything nowadays might be hard for someone with recent experience. Nani's volunteer idea might be just the thing you need. Look for an abandoned project on Sourceforge, or Freshmeat and pick it up. Even if you don't want to take over a project, you can show the employer the before and after examples. You could also start a whole new project and write from scratch.

Personally I have been looking for a good cross platform backup utility that will automatically backup progressive files over a network and delete the old ones when the count is reached, and renaming the rest. I could then have daily automatic backups, with a few weeks backups for the smaller stuff and just a few weekly backups for the larger folders. Java might be the ticket so it can be easily run on any environment. I have such a program for win32 but that doesn't do much good nowadays. ;)

Title: Yeeah! I got an interview set up!
Post by Karla on Dec 13th, 2004, 1:06pm
I am praying really really really hard.  I finally got someone willing to interview me.  I am praying really hard that I don't blow the interview.  Most interviews last 5 hours or so and are very intense and technical.  My friend who just completed an assigment for this company said his interview was only an hour or so.  So hopefully all will go well.  I want employement so badly!

Good Luck hun. It is hard. I understand how difficult it can be. Hell I have a degree in psych and counseled for 6 years, then get preg and want out of the field for a while.  I got the you dont have enough exp or because I had a degree they would not hire me because I "might" end up leaving. Just take your time and dont worry about how long it is.  Most people understood my lapse in employeement due to taking take of the kids and left it at that.  They dont need to know any more then that.

Let us know how it goes.

Can't agree more! Unless you love your job, which I think is rare!

Yes, I really do love working with computers.  I find the job fun, challenging, exciting, I could go on forever.  Wehen I graduated I said, " just put me in a basement with a computer and give me cobol for the rest of my life and I will be the happiest person alive."  I still feel that way.  Except now i like things like DB2, Oracle, CICS, VB.NET, all as well.  I can't believe they pay me to have so much fun.  And the day flies by I loose track of time.  Such excitement.
