Title: Clusters & Hypertension
Post by brnbaker on Dec 1st, 2004, 11:37pm
Hi all.  I'm Brenda, a 50 yr. old who's lived with the beast for three years now.  I'm currently in an 8 week lg. cycle.  When one hits, the pain drives my blood pressure to worrisome (stroke) levels...230 over 120 typical...and the BP will stay high until the pain subsides.  I've developed leisons (sp?) on my brain which prompted more testing for MS but determined that they were the result of mini strokes from the BP spikes.  I'm not looking forward to the "big one" so I've tried a variety of treatments (and doctors) to at least keep the pressure reasonable during my spells....but no luck.  Anyone have the same problem?

Welcome Brenda and I'm sorry you're here. My BP goes through the roof during a hit as well. Are you taking Verapamil? That's a blood pressure med that's also used as a CH preventative. If you aren't on any prevents, I would talk to your doc about them. Look around the boards here and at the OUCH site for treatment options. Pain free wishes to you.

WOW!  Sorry to hear of this.  That's some seriously high numbers there.  My BP goes up a little, but nothing like that.  What is your normal BP?  What meds have you and your doctors tried?

Gator

Hi Brenda:

I'm in a similar boat - my BP has been running a little high lately too - and it spikes to 190/140 during a HA.

My doctor just started me on verapamil for the BP and hopefully as a preventative too. I've only been on it for a few days - but my BP was down to 140/87 last night - best # I've seen in a while - and i did not get hit last night either.

These folks here have so much collected wisdom on CH - listen to them, talk to your doctor, print out articles that you feel may be helpful and take them with you.

Wishing you PF days & nights & lower BP too!

Sylvan

Ouch!  That's even higher than mine.  Verapamil has been my personal B/P and CH savior.  It's pretty amazing how 480mg/day will help both problems.

If you're not already on it, maybe it's worth a suggestion?

Hugs,

Kris

I hope all you with those sky high blood pressures are going to your doctors and figuring out a treatment plan!!  When diastolic (the bottom number) gets above 120 I think it is?  We then treat people for hypertensive crisis.  It is BAD news!!!  Hydralazine is what they generally give people during hypertensive crisis, but a better bet is to prevent the high blood pressure.

Mine gets very high (partially d/t pain and partially d/t genetics), but now that I'm up to 720mg of verapamil, it has controlled my heart rate and BP once again to normal levels, except for when the pain gets out of control, but it never gets as high as it did before.

Having chronic hypertension can cause a lot of problems to your body.  Even if it is just blasts up that high when you have a CH, it should still be evaluated!  Chances are, it is probably high to begin with or other things may also trigger it to be high.

Check with family doc or cardiology!!!

Hugz,
Carrie/Lizzie2 :)
