Title: California Post by Jeepgun on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:43am California We raced down Santa Monica Boulevard at dawn on your motorcycle, both of us still half stoned from the all-night party that we crashed. I tip my head way back and feel the silky wind against my neck as palm trees illuminated against the golden sunrise sky wave in gentle benediction. I'm all of twenty years old and laughing into the wind that morning, I am the king of the world. -Frank H. Weeden |

Title: Re: California Post by Cathi04 on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:51am LOL!! Yeahhhhhhhhhhl, but ya moved to Tennessee, ya silly galloot!!! Frank, your writing is consistently excellent. Please continue to share. Looking forward to more! Cathi |

Title: Re: California Post by Jeepgun on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:54am Thanks, Cathi. (But I LIKE it here in Tennessee!) [smiley=laugh.gif] |

Title: Re: California Post by Cathi04 on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:57am Pssstt..dont tell anyone, Frank....but the only thing I recognize about CA is the memories.......Oregon is where I'd rather be!! |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by Jeepgun on Nov 30th, 2004, 11:03am Yeah.. It's certainly changed a lot. Especially SoCal. :-/ |

Title: Re: California Post by marlin on Nov 30th, 2004, 12:16pm Frank, I have some fond memories of CA when I was in College, but mostly, I can't stand the place. Last time I moved out of that overpriced meatgrinder of a sardine can it took me 2 years of trying. Never moving back - EVER. Unless you're sitting on $5M+ you have to struggle to keep your head above water - for WHAT I CAN'T YET FIGURE OUT - CLOSE PROXIMITY TO DISNEYLAND???. Even then you still can't buy your way out of the traffic jams and smog. I don't get it. Try another poem that more accurately depicts So Cal life so others don't get the wrong impression. |

Title: Re: California Post by stevek on Nov 30th, 2004, 12:27pm I agree California is terrible, especially So Cal. No one should consider moving to or visiting California, and I think many living in California should leave. The weather is not that nice and the beaches are a joke. |

Title: Re: California Post by Linda_Howell on Nov 30th, 2004, 2:00pm Heavy sigh.....I wish I could disagree with all of you, but I can't. I grew up and lived in So. Calif. until 17 yrs. ago when I moved to No. Calif. AND..for the reasons listed here. Smog, Traffic, crime etc. However. There are millions of people who live there for a reason (including all my kids) Jobs are there to be had. Everyone has a script for a movie that anyday now someone will discover.. The weather is indeed temperate if you're tired of harsh winters or boiling summers... in an hour one can drive to the mountains, the desert, or the ocean. There are cultural places to go. (Opera, museums, art) VERY excellant colleges. (UCLA, and USC to name 2) Hollyweird: In it's own class of mis-distinction. Hey Steve? how about the best surfing this side of Hawaii? A little farther North...the best wine growing region in the US. Frank, I used to ride down Santa Monica Blvd. too. On a big beautiful purple Harley..Yeah those were the days. Aw jeez. Now I feel like the head of the chamber of commerce. Linda |

Title: Re: California Post by nani on Nov 30th, 2004, 2:18pm My interpretation of the poem is that it isn't so much about California, but about being 20. Just my [smiley=twocents.gif] Ah- being 20... brings back memories... :) |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by marlin on Nov 30th, 2004, 2:27pm nani, you missed a few... Smog. Traffic. Earthquakes Riots. Taxes. Rules. Nutcases. Absense of affordable even modest housing. Shit, even gas costs 15% more than anywhere else!!! To sum it up: Quality of life in CA STINKS. |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by nani on Nov 30th, 2004, 2:30pm marlin - if you read it again, you'll notice that Frank was too stoned to notice all that. ;;D |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by LeLimey on Nov 30th, 2004, 6:41pm Don't know about California but it does it for me about being twenty.. can just about remember that! Nice one Frank |

Title: Re: California Post by thebbz on Nov 30th, 2004, 7:56pm Living in Ca. now. One reason....work. My home is in Montana always will be. No work there though. I do agree with the above. This place blows. BB Keep up the good work there Frank. ahhh the memories. BB |

Title: Re: California Post by cootie on Nov 30th, 2004, 8:11pm Ride hard die free.........always thought California was the coolest place even tho I never been there.....guess I am wrong ? Myrtle Beach is the place to be with warm sunny wind in yer face as ocean waves crash beside ya. Live ta ride....ride to live Pam Ohio is a very pretty state in summer esp mid to southern Ohio....but....winter comes on fast and furious and lasts way too dam long. Most Ohio'ns are suicidal or nuts by March......but onset of summer in a few keeps us sane....kinda....sorta. |

Title: Re: California Post by LeLimey on Nov 30th, 2004, 9:14pm Hoi thats not fair! I want you to write a poem about... let me think.... pencil sharpeners! Nah seriously.. Just write about whatever floats your boat Frank.. you do it just right.. write! [smiley=hug.gif] |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by marlin on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:32pm No No NO!!! Frank, I don't disapprove of the subject. I want you write as many poems about CA as you like! Just try to make them believable. Write about the brown skies, the 5-hour commutes, the despair, the shattered dreams, bankruptcies... you know, reality. There, Sound like a plan? |

Title: Re: California Post by marlin on Nov 30th, 2004, 10:38pm Oh, and jonny, guess where I picked to live? I had the entire country to choose from as I work from home and travel on occasion. Yep, Tucson AZ. Almost never gets real hot (over 105 is what I call hot). Hell, even at 105 I freeze when I get out of my pool 'cause whe it's that hot it's dry (10%RH or less) and your body becomes an evap cooler. Shit, it got down to 28deg last night. I'm ready for 100 deg - bring it on. Great electrical storms in the summer, a gulley-washer or 2, dark skies so you can see a billion stars, normal people, reasonable cost of living and a lot of sunshine. |

Title: Re: California Post by Melissa on Dec 1st, 2004, 7:57am Well, I've been to San Diego twice and I LOVE that city!! I do love WI though, with all it's seasons and there are many wonderful things about this state. I have said though, that if anything were to happen to my family where my hubby and kids were gone, I'd move to San Diego by myself and rent a tiny appt. near the ocean while working as a waitress or somethin. :) |

Title: Re: California Post by PerryGR on Dec 1st, 2004, 8:12am Thanks for sharing Frank. PFDAN to all, Perry. BTW, I think being 20 (or 20something) is overrated. |

Title: Re: California Post by Jeepgun on Dec 1st, 2004, 8:49am Thanks, Perry. And yeah, I was kind of alluding to that in the poem. :) |

Title: Re: California Post by Bob P on Dec 1st, 2004, 10:04am Just gotta stay out of the big cities. Central California Coast! Nothing better than firing up the hawg on a warm summer day and cruising up Highway 1 to Big Sur! You only have to visit Marc's web site to know it be so: http://www.morrobayphotos.com/ It's a special state. Highest point in the lower 48 (see the avitar to the right), lowest point in the US, tallest, biggest and oldest living things in the world. Freeze you fools! |

Title: Re: California Post by Jeepgun on Dec 1st, 2004, 10:10am I grew up 50 miles east of Bakersfield, in a small town called Lake Isabella. I was born in Lynnwood and lived in West Covina until I was 5. One set of my grandparents lived in La Puente and the other, in Paramount. I also have relatives in Long Beach. I miss the hell out of California. |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by Bob P on Dec 1st, 2004, 10:16am I was born in Milwaukee but we moved to the San Fernando valley when I was 3 (1953). Grew up in Granada Hills but moved up to Los Osos (Morro Bay) 20 years ago. Done a lot of fishing in Isabella. Spent a few days just up the river from Kernville last summer, hiking & fishing. |
||||
Title: Re: California Post by Jeepgun on Dec 1st, 2004, 10:18am COOL! My wife and I spent our honeymoon at a Bed & Breakfast across the street from Circle Park in Kernville. :) My dad works for Southern California Edison. I learned how to waterski in Lake Isabella, and one summer I worked at Sportsman's Bait & Tackle, with the official bass scale. People were coming in with 23lb largemouth bass... Amazing... It was a great place to grow up. :) |
