Title: It found me... Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 29th, 2004, 9:37am I have been pretty quiet about the fact that the cycle that I expected to start over a month ago took a detour. I don't like to talk much about that when so many others here are suffering constantly. Well... Saturday evening, it found me. 6:30 P.M, I'm sitting in my lazy boy talking to my wife and it hit me. Not a real bad one but I know what the future holds already. It only lasted about 10 minutes. 9:00 P.M. and here comes another one. It's stronger this time. It also hung around for close to an hour. Not strong enough yet to pace the floors or stick my thumb in my eye yet but enough to keep me up till it's gone. Nothing last night but a couple shadows. This morning, 8:30 A.M. as I'm sitting here typing, I feel one lurking. I can tell that it won't be a real bad one but it's gonna irritate me for a while. I know from the past that It's gonna get worse every day now until it peaks. Now, I'm afraid to lay down and go to sleep at night. How do the chronics here deal with this constantly??? O2 or not, I feel very deeply for anyone who has to deal with this for even a minute. The hits I've had the last couple of days are nothing compared to what most of you go through daily and I'm already complaining about it. PF days to all . Pat |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by john_d on Nov 29th, 2004, 9:40am Well that just sux. Is this a cycle time for alot of people? because I have been shadowing pretty hard myself. Hopefully it will pass. |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 29th, 2004, 9:51am If this is anything like in the past, I'm looking at about 6 weeks. In a few weeks, I'll probably be doing some real complaining when it starts to peak on me. My cycles usually hit twice a year. Early October and early April are my usual times and they usually go about 6 weeks. They usually have about a 1 week period right in the middle where I wake up in the middle of the night every night with the red hot dagger in the eye. I'll survive. And for all of you who go through this daily.... :( :( :( I wish I could take them away and destroy them completely, enver to return again. Pat |

I don't know Pat, we just do... It's one of those things, you know. You just kinda get used to it. I'm luckier than most chronics as my hits don't normally go over a k 6. I sometimes have bad episodes when it gets much more intense, but my regular chronic state is livable. I assume you are on some prevents? Hang in there... [smiley=hug.gif] |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by don on Nov 29th, 2004, 9:59am Do you use a preventative? If so get it started? |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 29th, 2004, 10:18am I'm not using any preventives and never have yet. Any suggestions for someone who hates to take any drugs that aren't needed? Is there anything off-the-shelf that I can get at the drug store without a perscription? :-/ Thanks. |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by JJA on Nov 29th, 2004, 10:25am I'd start with melatonin. Jesse |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by sandie99 on Nov 29th, 2004, 10:30am I am so sorry that the beast found you... :( Quote:
My answer to that is: somehow, because I have to. I don't exactly have an option.... As someone who also hates taking meds, I hope that you will find a combo which works. I'm still searching for it. Best wishes & PFdays, sandie99 |

Obviously they are if your getting hit. Why the resistance to the Rx drugs. |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 29th, 2004, 10:55am Don, Let's just say that I have a very addictive personality. Had some problems with controlled stuff when I was younger. Drugs also have a tendancy to do really weird stuff to my system and I'm weird enough as it is. Pat |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by karma on Nov 29th, 2004, 11:11am water, 02, magnesium along with B suppliments, melatonin for the nite hits. When getting hit try deep breathing from the dyaphram. Slow and steady. This helps you to relax and by not getting all worked it seems to give some relief. |

Pat- none of the prevents are addictive. Verapamil is a blood pressure drug, lithium is basically a salt, and Neurontin (I take it instead of Topamax) is an anticonvulsant. I wouldn't worry about getting addicted to those... |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by Jeepgun on Nov 29th, 2004, 11:22am Damn... I am so sorry you are going into cycle, Pat. Hang in there... There are two things I use that seem to help: 1. Breathe and relax. In the middle of an attack, the thing you instinctively want to do is pace, bang your head, or dig the heel of your palm into the afflicted eye. Instead, relax and let the pain just wash over you like the ocean pounding against the side of a mountain. Don't resist it or fight it. Just BREATHE. It makes it so much more bearable. 2. Ice pack to the eye. Someone passed out a recipe for making one at Nashcon... Maybe someone will post it here again. Readers? |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by Tom K on Nov 29th, 2004, 11:25am Agree with the Verap line. Also try some tonin to get through the night hits. 9mg was doing me good. T |

I don't have that recipe, but I found this to be more helpful than ice: You can buy dried corn at the grocery store (look in the spanish food section) and sew it up into a burlap bag. Keep it in the freezer. It's not as painful to skin as ice can be. |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Nov 29th, 2004, 12:09pm Thanks for the advice guys (and girls). I usually keep a glass of water next to my bed any way, so that part is covered. After finding this place and reading about O2 use, I also tried what Frank mentioned. Breathing deeply and relaxing actually gave me some relief. I'll be trying the melatonin when the cycle starts working into a rage on me. Do I need to take it every night as a preventive? I'm really bad about remembering to do this kind of stuff daily and need to come up with a plan to remember to take it. |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by Kevin_M on Nov 29th, 2004, 7:57pm Pat, I've gone the verap prevent route and haven't regretted it though I also was a "problem child". Still breathing the oxygen nightly but the intensity is more gradual and the edge of sanity has been in check because six weeks though is only the bottom of the second with a rookie pitcher. No prevents means too much trex usage also, for me. Hope you find something that helps. Kevin M |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by Ree on Nov 29th, 2004, 8:11pm Sorry Pat... are you on a preventative... when Dave starts to get them he tries to deferr the cycle by acting fast and getting on his preventative........good luck and keep us posted... love to you ree ps... give your wife a hug too... |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by cootie on Nov 30th, 2004, 12:22am Is trex really a med a person would worry about as addictive ? I took it once for a......um.....sorry guys but I am gonna say it......'headbangin migraine'........Brad sudgested it cuz it got so bad I was punchin myself in the head. But I didn't like the stuff to where I would of even 'wanted' to do it again unless I had to. I've been a weekend warrior but that stuff would not of been on my list. Maybe it was too strong a dose I took....dunno. Brad swore by verapimil.......didn't seem to have alot of problems with it to complain about takein it daily and he have never been one to do daily stuff. He's on anuther med now to keep his blood pressure normal and am wondering if he can continue if his cycle comes back or have to change or what ? So far so good here keepin the cycle AWAY but.......time will tell and I am worried. (I'm always sumthin ain't I ?) The land of is and isn't Pam |

Pat, perhaps it would be better to just start it now? To let it get into your system and see if your cycle doesn't ramp up so bad? Just a thought... I'm sorry it found you. It's been looking for me, but it lost out to a really nasty cold. It'll get me this coming year tho, that I am sure of. :( Hope the melatonin works for you, I've yet to try it. Perhaps my upcoming cycle I will. hugs, :)mel |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by Carl_D on Nov 30th, 2004, 7:54am Definitely check into the Verapamil and lithium as prevents (don't worry about an 'addictive buzz', you won't have one.) Imitrex shots are a quick abortive. You may feel mild to moderate yet short discomfort, but it's nothing compared to a CH. However, if you try Trex and get any chest pains, discontinue use and call your doctor. Shots work the quickest. Sorry the beast found you bro, and hope you shake the fucker off of your tail soon and the only wailing you have to do is with your guitar. Peace, Carl D |

Title: Re: It found me... Post by E-Double on Nov 30th, 2004, 9:44pm Hang in there bro!!!!! I hear everything you're saying as does everyone else... Go for the melatonin now......It might be able to start preventing the night visitors. I have no real other advice as far as the other types of preventative meds since this is my first cycle using them........ Tapered down because was starting to feel good.....went low dose while on honeymoon and started twinging again today so who knows...I'll probably up the verap again. We spoke before re: the trex and I said I'd talk ya through it....The offer still stands for when you are ready...I'm here! Wish I knew & wish you well Eric ( hates taking any meds/drugs for many of the same reasons you mentioned ;)) |
