Title: Clusters and flying Post by high_commander on Nov 25th, 2004, 3:12pm [smiley=huh.gif]I've never flown before when my clusters are in cycle. Anyone know if this is going to trigger ? I'd really like to avoid that situation on a 737. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by BobG on Nov 25th, 2004, 4:54pm Have spent many hours in the air. No problems. But, that was all in a pressurized plane. Have noticed attacks come with changes in pressure while driving in the mountains in a non-presurrized car. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Renee on Nov 25th, 2004, 10:38pm I have problems after landing and exiting from the pressurized cabin when traveling to a lower elevation from where i departed. My neuro had me take a triptan one hour prior to landing as a prevent and that has worked the only time I've flown since. Prior to taking the triptan the hits would be BIG. Nothing like banging your head around on walls in a baggage claim area. I won't go there again. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by marlin on Nov 25th, 2004, 10:47pm No problem for me normally. Did get hit 3 weeks ago in the air. Retreated to the spacious head and slammed a trex shot - all gone. Waited a little longer than I normally would before reaching for the trex. Had to get my bag out of the overhead and hunt around for the kit in front of a crowd, not that I gave a shit. At least they didn't have to watch me blast myself. I'm convinced it was merely a coincidence that I got hit in the aircraft. I was getting hit 3X/day at the time... |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Marc on Nov 25th, 2004, 11:09pm I fly pretty much every week for work and it's not a fun place to be when I get hit. Flying doesn't trigger my CH's, they happen when they happen........ I carry a small card with a very brief CH explanation so that I don't have to interact with people asking if I need help. It also helps avoid arguments about leaving your seat when the fasten seat belt light is on. Generally, I've found flight attendants to be super supportive in bringing me ice and tons of paper towels - then leaving me alone as requested on the card. |

Exactly. I used to fly on and maintain an aircraft called a p3 as an electronics tech, regularly the pilots would have to do training and they needed guys to sit as aft observers of the engines, to sit in the back and look at the engines to make sure they did not catch on fire basically. For their training, we would take off and land the bird for hours at a time. Never a trigger, but occasionally a hit. I did get the headaches, but I had to do my job, I would just squint with the eye and dance in my seat. If I tried to medical excuse out, I would have been sent to some crappy job like passing out basketball's at the gym. It really is amazing what you can do even when you are in horrible pain. I once unloaded an entire 18 wheel truck load with a forklift and I was getting hit the entire time. Tough choices back then. These days, I am not in cycle (thank God and knock on wood) but if I was I would just close the door to my office, or go out to my car. And that card idea is awesome, I would definitely do that. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Charlie on Nov 27th, 2004, 2:05am Flying was never a problem. I had some kind of pressure "headache" or something ten years before they began. It wasn't related and happened only once. Flying was never a trigger. Happy Landings. Charlie |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by sandie99 on Nov 27th, 2004, 2:48am During my CH time I have flown on several occasions and I have (so far) never had CH attack during the flight itself. I have had small attacks before the flight, triggered getting up early etc. Best wishes, sandie99 |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Testy1 on Nov 28th, 2004, 8:10am Been hit quite a few times between here and either Europe or Asia. Six or seven hour flights are just about a guarantee. If I'm on a cycle I'm going to get zapped. As I can't get immitrex, I carry a bottle of cafergot and immigran and just eat a few of those and wait the thing out. A few very ugly flights but the worst thing is no cigarettes afterwards. Regards Jack. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Jeepgun on Nov 29th, 2004, 1:17pm I used to be a flight medic on Hueys. I fly to Japan and back, every so often. I've piloted several different types of planes and ultralights. Flying is not a trigger for me. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by ClusterChuck on Nov 29th, 2004, 1:26pm Flying is NOT a trigger for me, either. But I did get nailed a couple times on the flights to Nashville. I can't use trex, and did not have O2, so I just had to ride them out. Not fun, or pretty. Thank the Lord, my daughter was with me to ward off the "do-gooders". Chuck |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by echo on Nov 29th, 2004, 1:36pm As long as the plane stays under 28K ft I'm ok. Go over 30K ft and I will get a moderate dance during the decent. Just enough to make me know the fuck stick is there but not bad enough to take me out of the game. He saves nailing me to the wall until I fall asleep. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by high_commander on Nov 29th, 2004, 4:35pm Thank you to everyone who resopnded. I'm flying to Vancouver in december and was a little worried. For those who wondered about the High Commander label - I am a she, not a he - and the label was given to me by the kids I work with. I run a camp kitchen in the summer and therefore control everyones food, the kids felt this warranted the label. |

Title: Re: Clusters and flying Post by Margi on Nov 29th, 2004, 5:36pm Hi, I see you're from Lloyd. I'm in Calgary. My hubby is a clusterhead and he has found that when he's in cycle and he flies, it's after he lands that he does experience a few more hits. Do you have any abortives that you can take with you on the plane? If you're flying Westjet, they're pretty understanding about that kind of stuff - sure would be worth checking ahead of time to see if it's ok if you bring your meds on board. Just wanted to let you know that we also have a Canadian website for Canadian clusterheads and we have a message board there, just like this one. Feel free to drop in anytime. http://www.clusterheadaches.ca |
