Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Ruth on Nov 18th, 2004, 10:54am Don't take me wrong, I love the Library it is a wonderful place, I just think all that money would have been better spent on medical research. Maybe something on a smaller scale would have made more sense. However, not too many things make sense, when you really think about it. Ruth |

Every US president builds a library after they leave office. I have been to the Truman Library in western Missouri - it was an interesting look into that period of history. Presidents who are sympatico or charismatic are considered Great (Clinton, Reagan, JFK). Presidents that are more introverted (Carter, Ford, Nixon, Bush 41) are not. Television is a big factor. The US abolished the monarchy, but not the psychological tendencies that give rise to cults of personalities. We don't have a Princess Di, but we do have Oprah. Clinton can emotionally connect to a large group of Americans, allowing him to end welfare as we know it, trim the size of the federal government and balance the budget, and still be admired. If an introvert had done that, he would have been vilified as mean and uncaring. Large groups of Americans love that Bubba because they believe that he understands and loves them. |

Mind you, I didn't "get" the Diana cult either, and I think the Royal family are an anachronism this country doesn't need, but as they are mostly powerless and harmless, they can stay if they carry on generating tourist revenue ;;D Your presidents on the other hand are FAR from powerless and harmless. Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Charlie on Nov 19th, 2004, 7:03pm I wouldn't call it a cult but Clinton is a guy that can speak off the cuff and make you listen. So could Reagan and JFK. Too bad Ike wasn't a good speaker...anyway, everybody on either side said Clinton was fun to talk to. These are men who knew how to use the camera and laugh at themselves. They didn't need scripts. Diana was just so different. Fergie is more fun for me. Charlie |

Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Ruth on Nov 19th, 2004, 7:21pm I will try to say this without offending those who like President Clinton. It would have been nice if Bill would have had enough respect for himself, his wife and his country to have held his temptations in check. I found the whole notion of having his personal life spread all over the TV and Newspapers embarrassing, not just for me as a person but for the United States as a country. It was like WTF. I am not a saint and I respect everyones opions just wanted to let that off my chest. Ruth |

Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by pubgirl on Nov 19th, 2004, 10:37pm Sadly Charlie that's the kind of news which makes it over here. We either get serious newsworthy events or ones which make Americans look bad, weird or worse. Had the most bizarre programme recently all about an American convention where everyone lived their lives as an animal. There were loads of them, lizardmen, tigers, rabbits etc. The weirdest was a catman who had had plastic surgery many, many times to look like a cat. He had a split top lip, special permanent holes for his whiskers, several total facial remodels. He even had an animatronic tail and said that he was planning surgery to have a real one! God knows how he got a plastic surgeon to do it all. Sorry, I'm rambling on but it was the strangest thing I've ever seen, and it gives the impression that America is full of total wackos. Wendy |

Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Charlie on Nov 20th, 2004, 4:40am Never heard of that one Wendy....surely not Animal Farm ::) I know Europeans get some godawful impressions. Svenn says the same. It's our own fault with the crap we run on TV. The Jesus types make lots of noise but are a distinct minority. You'd never know it though. I know no one that I grew up with that goes to church regularly or much at all. It sounds silly but it's true. It's all about abortion and gay marriage. No matter that the world is as dangerous as ever and that someday the rest of the world that holds a lot of our fragile "paper," may decide to call it in. The dollar isn't bulletproof.............not to worry though so long as that gay couple doesn't move next door and recruit your children to the fold. Maybe we can grow up some day. Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by pubgirl on Nov 20th, 2004, 5:08am It surprises me that the USA has more of an issue with abortion than we do as we are notoriously conservative here, can only assume that it is because despite having a "Church of England" we are a pretty irreligious society, generally speaking. It is very, very easy to get an abortion here, to the point where we have had "abortion tourists" (horrible phrase) for many years, and have even had people mooring hospital ships just offshore in our waters so that abortions can be done legally aboard. Gay marriage hasn't really become too much of an issue yet. Might be wrong though as some sections of the Church who are still living in a previous century in their minds are still fighting women and gay vicars! W |

Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Charlie on Nov 20th, 2004, 11:49pm The religious types have been taken for a ride. They need to stop and take a look. Nothing such as gay marriage ban, abortion, school prayer, ten commandments stuff, have come to pass with the elections of these politicians. It works to get them elected though. Sadly, it's the homosexuals that made such a big deal over gay marriage that probably won the election for George Bush. I have no problem with it but it's not high on my list of things worry about. All they did was give these evangelicals and Pat Robertson followers a way to defeat candidates that they almost certainly voted for. Real dumb. Silly fearmongers are what we want here. :-/ Charlie |

Title: Re: What do you think of Clinton's Library? Post by Jeepgun on Nov 21st, 2004, 5:06pm When I lived in Japan, the only news that made it on the Japanese newscasts were the things that made America look like a bunch of gun-toting, trigger happy rednecks.
