Title: Any people of color out there? Post by nani on Nov 17th, 2004, 12:58pm Besides myself, that is. I know Hirvimaki is latino, but having seen pics- it's in surname only. ;;D My heritage is South American Indian. We have a few Brits, some Australians, and more than a few Northern Europeans. We have at least 2 rednecks, one member from Mongolia and one from South Africa. Syrian surgeons do not need to reply. Just wondering... |

I can't argue with that. It's pretty much the best of both worlds... :) Hmmm... White. White is the quality or state of the achromatic color of greatest lightness (bearing the least resemblance to black). Or, white can refer to a member of the Caucasoid race, which is of, constituting, or characteristic of a race of humankind native to Europe, North Africa, and southwest Asia - and even a few parts of Central Asia and India - and classified according to physical features. Caucasoid was one of the four major races as they were commonly classified in the 19th century, along with Negroid, Mongoloid and Australoid. Now adays it has come to mean Indo-European. Oh, White is also the 14th most popular surname in the USA. I always mark "other" on the forms that ask for race. I'm just too confused... Hirvimaki-Isi |

Title: Re: Any people of color out there? Post by Margi on Nov 17th, 2004, 4:39pm we've done quite a few informal polls here over the years and, although Jonny posted those two pics, I believe Bernie was our only full-blooded African American here over the years and, if I remember correctly, it turned out that she didn't have clusters but something far more life threatening (I forget now, she's been gone quite a few years). I don't remember the Asian man in that pic but the Asian race has never been well represented here either, nor has the Native population. There was one lady here named, Yuko, in the early days and I assume she was Japanese (although I could be completely wrong) but she never came back after the first year of ch.com. We've done polls on this over at OUCH Canada too and...same results. Overwhelming majority of sufferers are caucasian. I think there really is something to this. Whether it's genetic, dietary or what....there just honestly isn't much representation from any of these three racial groups. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the Clusterbeast is a bigot. I gotta ask though....did someone say in this thread that Australians are a different race? News to me. And I imagine to most of the Australians in the audience, too! [smiley=laugh.gif] |

I assume you are referring to my post, and the answer is: no, not exactly. I referred to "Australoid" in listing the four major racial calssifications that were popular in 19th century racial theories - remember, we are a bit past the 19th century now. The four races were Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid and Australoid. Australoid designated a racial group including the Australian Aborigines, the Veddahs of Ceylon, the pre-Dravidian people of India, and the Negritos from Southeast Asia. Australoid was not a reference to the Brittons and others who settled in Australia. Hirvimaki-Isi |

Title: Re: Any people of color out there? Post by BobG on Nov 18th, 2004, 4:27am I think a couple or 3 of reasons there are few Blacks, Asians, Indians (both American and those from India) represented here are economics, language and internet access. Economics because white people tend to make more money and therefore can afford a home computer or have a job where computers are available. Language because this website is in English. That excludes most of the world. Internet access because without it you can’t see what I’m typing. And that brings us back to economics. Myself……….I’m as white as you can get. I have my family tree that goes back to the days of Robin Hood and his Fairy Men in Sherwood Forrest. |

Like it or not, English is the lingua franca. English is the major language of news and information in the world. It is the language of business and government even in some countries where it is a minority language. It is the language of maritime communication and international air traffic control, and it is used even for internal air traffic control in countries where it is not a native language. It is the language that links Finns to French, Italians to Swedes and Danes and Germans to Portuguese as Europe moves toward political and economic unification in the EU. How many registered users of this site are there now? Upwards of 6,000, right? How many people from those racial groups are represented here? Not many, right? Yes, we remember that Asian fellow (Jonathan He) that was recently here - he's on our Canadian site now too - (well he posted once, anyway) but he hasn't been back and his diagnosis was sketchy and not confirmed. He mentioned that he had treated his headaches in the past with Chinese medicine that wasn't available on this side of the ocean. Canada has a HUGE Asian population, as well as Native and...I'm telling ya - they don't seem to seek out help for cluster headaches! I just can't believe that it's a pride thing, or an internet inaccessibility or language barrier. If these groups were prone to cluster, they'd be seeking out relief in ANY way possible. We have a very good cluster neuro here in Canada (Vancouver) - Dr. Gord Robinson and one of our people did ask him awhile ago if he had any cluster patients from other races. I believe he commented that he honestly couldn't say that he did have any Native or Asian clusterheads. Vancouver has 2 million people now and an extremely high Asian population. Doc R is THE go-to Cluster Dude in Vancouver - he spoke at the OUCH Convention in 2002 and he really is the most referred to neuro in the area. You would think that he would have a couple of Asian patients at least, if they were prone to clusters. But...he doesn't. You do the math. Maybe these groups are born with teflon hypothalmajiggies....? oh and Woobie - I didn't forget about Ramon, forgive me for excluding him.
