Title: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by Svenn on Nov 17th, 2004, 3:30am Got this from Tina folks Feel free to contect her and help her --------------------------------------------------------------------- I hate to bother you all with a computer question – but we’re baffled over here. Our computer was fine – everything was perfect. Then one day – we couldn’t get into our email accounts…. Then the connection started slowing down… now.. we cant post, we cant send PMs .. I cant pay my bills online anymore. The MSN messenger works – sometimes… emails. I cant get into Hotmail at all. I can get into my Gmail inbox, but I cant OPEN anything or send anything. Yahoo isn’t working either. It seems like any secure website … I cant get into and any other website.. is just slow I don’t understand. If it’s a setting somewhere – security setting or something, then it’s beyond me.. It was suggested that it was a firewall issue… so we disabled the firewall – nothing changed…. Enabled it again – since it didn’t change anything We thought this was a virus or a worm – so we reformatted the computer. But it still does it… on BOTH computers. We have a satellite connection. It’s supposed to be fast. The ISP says we have a “stable and clean” connection --- but it’s slow and a lot of things don’t work. We tried using Mozilla and Netscape instead of IE – nothing different. We tried reformatting. We called the ISP – they said it isn’t them.WHAT do we do now?? Is it a hardware problem?? Everything else on the computer works fine…… as far as the burner and other programs.. it’s just an internet thing.Hope I didn’t ramble too much.. and for those of you who might have suggestions – could you please give them in SIMPLE = stupid people language so I can understand?? LMAO! And THANK You for reading my ramblings…and thanks for any suggestions.Want to apologize for not keeping in touch with a lot of you – it’s strictly because email and PMs aren’t working - ….i’m sorry.. as soon as we get it figured out – I’ll be responding to you all… Tina |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by Testy1 on Nov 17th, 2004, 4:37am Svenn I've had EXACTLY those symptoms about two weeks ago. Also, I am on a Direcway satellite connection. Anyway, I wound up formatting the disk and then upgrading from Win 2K to XP. After that I was very careful about which applications I put back on the system. I only put the ones I really needed to use. I am convinced it was some kind of virus/trojan/worm/other malware but a full scan with Symantec found nothing. Anyway, something to try and I hope it helps. Jack |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by Melissa on Nov 17th, 2004, 10:05am I had the problem with getting into any password sites until I realized that I had to manually allow them access under Tools, then Internet Options, Privacy, Sites and then putting the url in of the site I want to allow access. This was due to the download of Spyware Blaster. Anyway, Ramon, I run Norton Systemworks on my puter (XP) and don't have any probs. with it. Sorry I can't help you :( |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by unsolved1 on Nov 17th, 2004, 10:33am Sounds like a virus to me. (1) Try a "System Restore" and set your computer back to an earlier time (before you had any trouble) If that doesn't work ... And If you don't mind losing files (or if you already have them backed up) (2) Reformat your hard drive Or call a PC specialist who can reformat using a slave drive and save your files (But that'll cost ya) Goodluck Ramon & Tina Unsolved |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by john_d on Nov 17th, 2004, 6:55pm My usual advice for after your system is cleared, take it or leave it. If you have windows XP turn on 'System Restore,' you can find it under Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, next time you get a virus/ worm/ malware, whatever, just restore to an earlier date. This has gotten me out of many jams. :) Those buggers are a pain in the rear. |

Hey Woobs and Ramon, No wonder I've been getting blank e-mails from you. My husband had a similar problem. Got a virus from the network itself. I don't believe that any ISP would know it's out there, since you probably have your 2 PC's hooked up to the sattelite right? If you want, if you still have my number, I'm sure that Ken would be willing to walk you through it. He deals A LOT with this with 3 kids on the Internet, they are getting things all the time! I'm guessing why Norton won't run with XP is because of a virus. Some viruses manage to get in (whichever way they can, mostly through the networks) and disable Norton. I know from experience, it's happened to all 3 of my kids, then they get loaded up with viruses that are never caught. Hubby has a lot of good tools to get rid of those, so like I said, if you want to give me a buzz, or just make a post - feel free. I know he can probably fix you up. He's a genius at these things. Hugs, Toni |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by Cerberus on Nov 18th, 2004, 10:59am ok....so I ran the windows scan tool....so far so (nothing) Norton will NOT work on this Machine , why? no clue, but I seem to be the only person in the world having this problem... Toni...wish I could call ya but my long distance is gone so I cant....sorry about the blank e-mails. :-/ Screwed... Ramon |

Hmmm...you can't PM either? Send me your number. I have unlimited long distance. I know that Ken has run into this problem before and he can 'probably' fix it. it's worth a shot though. See if you can't find anyway to send me your number Ramon. Even if it has to be in a private chat...I have a private one on my website. If you want to, just let me know. You can give it to me there - if you can get to it. Trying.... Toni |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by unsolved1 on Nov 18th, 2004, 11:20am You reformatted and still have problems [smiley=huh.gif] Usually ... reformatting does the trick. It's got to be a setting somewhere. Are you running additional firewall programs such as ZoneAlarm? If so, that might be the problem. Sorry I can't be of much help. Unsolved |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by Drk^Angel on Nov 18th, 2004, 11:04pm I would think it's maybe a network issue... Either your local network or your internet connection might be screwy. What are you using to network your computers to the satellite connection? Have you made any changes to your local network (hardware, cables, moved something, etc.)? Have you checked your dish to make sure something hasn't partially blocked it or the dish has fallen out of alignment? Has it been excessively cloudy, windy, rainy, foggy, sneezy, dopey, doc... Oops... Sorry... Ya know what I mean... Something slowing down your download speeds, or intermittently disrupting your download connection could definately create the problems you are discribing. Good luck PFDAN................................................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: WOOBIE NEED HELP FOLKS Post by cootie on Nov 18th, 2004, 11:29pm Boy can I relate to all this.....my outlook express crashed recently.....started runnin really slow for a while then could NOT get into my deleted folder....then I couldn't get into any of it all of a sudden ! I had all sorts of important info in there. I downloaded OPERA email program free and brouser to 'get by' and was able to import my info out of my outlook express thru Opera and save stuff. But at least I can do mail now and brouse.....Opera is kinda cool once ya get the hang of it but I am still tryin to figure alot of it out and gettin major frustrated. I did download the windows service pack 2......alot of computers probly did that automatically with the windows update. But mine kept saying it was downloading the update but it never did it.....the windows icon stuck on the toolbar or whatever it's called for a few weeks doing NOTHING. Fineally got it to download thru anouther site and it took forever. And 'that's when the trouble started'. I have run scan after scan and found nothing. I couldn't get into any of my accounts either.....forgot half my passwords to pay bills online. I'm still haven trouble here and there.....internet explorer got wierd on me too......can't use it cuz all the words show up 6 inches tall with no lines or frames whatever and colors......went thru every setting I could find and everything is set rite.
