I have to have two teeth extracted Wednesday at the oral surgeon and I am not being put to sleep.
They are offering up Nitris but I don't no if I want to risk it.
I have never used it and I don't want to risk it making my headaches come back.
Does anyone no if it would be a bad thing to try.

Hi Ruth,

I work in a dental office. what I can tell you is that if I am working on a pt. using nitris, it can trigger me. But everyone is diff. I would suggest that if you are going to use it have them turn it up slowly, they tend to turn it up fast so they can get to work faster, and have then leave it on pure o2 afterwards for more that the 2 min. they normal do. Tell then ahead of time that you want to stay on the o2 for atleat 10 min. after.

Nitrous oxide was never a trigger for me, but novacaine shots could be depending on what area is getting shot. I can't imagine an extraction without either - so I don't know... :-/

I'd have the gas or something else. I had epilepsy and CH at the same time and the dentists hit me with shit to knock me flat. Never had Nitrus though.

Novacaine and gas. That's for gettin teeth cleaned. Let's not even discuss the horrors of drilling and extraction. I'm glad most of my teef are dead. Dentists are barbarians, with techniques barely out of the dark ages.

I always get an injection of something. It knocks me out. Don't know what it is but I'm dead to the world for an extraction. Hap is right. Whatever Novacaine is today, it won't kill pain enough for an extraction.

Don't know if this will help, but, I had a root canal with novacaine shots and I began getting hit halfway through the project. Needless to say I occupied that room for the next hour and a half. They brought me O2 and one of the girls at the front desk even gave me HER Pepsi that she brought from home for her lunch, bless her. I'm not sure what the answer is as it seems that for everyone in here at least one of those things can be a trigger (not to mention just the laying back in a dentist chair with the light in your face and mouth hanging open).

P.S. I went back to the office a week later and brought that receptionist a case of pepsi. She wasn't expecting it but she deserved it!!!

There was a hippie mystic that went to the dentist but told him that he didn't want any anesthetic. He wanted to transcend dental medication. ;;D

When I was a teenager I used to suck nitrous like it was oxygen and never had a problem with triggering a cluster headache, but it always did leave me with a hangover type headache.

Thanks to all who have responded.
I think I will forget the Nitrous and stick with the Novacine and see if I can get through it.
I have been pain free sense the 4th of November and don't want to risk setting off another round with Mr. Ugly.
I will be sure to let you all no how it goes.

Hi,
Just wanted to say, I made it through the teeth extractions pretty good, I didn' t use the nitrous.
I just went with the local, after if was over my blood pressure dropped way below a hundred and I had to wait until it came back up before they would let me drive home.
I had gotten very light headed after they got the teeth out and when I got home I had a headache for about 3 hours, but just a headache, not a cluster. I think probably from the drop in Blood pressure and local.
Any way just wanted to pop in and say I am doing good.

Woo Hoo! I'm glad to hear you got on okay Ruthie! I hate going to the dentist more than anything else.. its that looking up someone elses nose thing as well as the pain!
Apparently dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession - how about that for a useless piece of information?!

Thanks for the thumbs up, sad information about Dentists. Makes you wonder why.
We had a family doctor that committed suicide when I was a child. One never knows the whys of these things.

My dentist told me that they have the highest suicide rate because they spend all day causing other people pain. Think about it- how many people do you know who LOVE the dentist? Most hate and/or fear them. And I always thought being a mom was a thankless job...
