Title: falling into temptation
Post by john_d on Nov 14th, 2004, 9:45am
Confessions of a habitual consumer.

I am about to go buy one of these, the urge to buy this new car is like a snowball rolling down a hill, it gets bigger every moment.  Right now I have no car payments, which is comfortable and very nice, but that is about to change and at this point I do not think I can stop it.  Help!  No, don't help, I want it.

Go for it John. You’ll love that car.

Last week I went looking at new cars. At the Lexus dealer I was told that to buy the car I was looking at I’d have to sign a letter to the Homeland Security Department stating my finance money was not coming from a terrorist group. Do terrorist groups buy $62,000 cars?

The next day I was looking at the Mercedes Benz cars and I ask about the Homeland statement. No, I was told, not for buying a Mercedes.

A month ago I bought another house a few blocks from myself. Among the paperwork  there was one from the Homeland Security Department that we had to sign stating the money for the mortgage did not come from a terrorist organization. Anybody know how many terrorists are buying houses in Henderson, Nevada? Just wondering.

Hmmm…. If I buy Lexus the money goes to Japan and must be declared free of terrorism.

If I finance my new house with American money and it stays in America it must be declared free of terrorist interests.

But, if I buy the Mercedes the money goes to Germany and there is no statement to sign.

Is there something wrong with this picture?

Wow John... awesome car... the look is incredible and kinda futurist... really neat car ;) If you can afford it go ahead my friend... please yourself ;)

Remember though... cars are usually not a good place to put your money in... 30% lost of value as soon as you buy it ;)

take care bro... have fun... You know what you should do today... Go ahead and go try it... 8)

I have always wondered what it'd be like to buy a brand spanking new car.  The closest I've come is the car we just bought about 2 months ago.  It's a 2000.

Anyway, let me know what it feels like...

Awesome ride.  That thing is sharp.

Phil nailed it though... that 30% year 1 depreciation keeps me away from the lots.

Stalking ebay for 2-3 months until the right one comes up can be fun.  ie...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=5333&item=2498286488&rd=1

We bought my wifes late-90's JGC on eBay after checking a few times a week for 2 months.  Found it about an hour away... scalped it for about 70% of wholesale.   ;;D

That said, I admittedly hoard my money.  You would all laugh in my face if you knew what my primary driver is.   ;;D

Good luck whatever way you go... you know what you are doing!

Actually it's not.  It's easy to confuse them because they look alot alike in a photo; but the smaller, cheaper Acura TSX is the one based on the European Accord.  The Acura TL model has the frame of the larger US Accord.  But it has a more powerful engine, a much better suspension, a sportier body and of course alot more goodies.   As you can see I have been dwelling on this a while  ;)

I work within the banking industry and all the laws relating to money laundering have recnetly changed owing to (largely) terrorist activity. You would be amazed at some of the crap people do to "clean" money and buying cars and property is one of them. They can buy a car for $20, 000 dirty money, sell it on for $18,000 for arguments sake and that is then "clean" money from a legitimate source. The company I work for is actually an American one and the laws have changed over there too. Now I have to report all suspect activity and get it NCIS checked, if I don't and it is then investigated and found to be dodgy I personally can be prosecuted not the company so with the onus on ME I'm going to make damn sure I find out where your payments are coming from!
Just another thing to hate Osama Bin Laden for.. as if I didn't have enough work already!!!!

John, I consider you a friend, so allow me to offer you some friendly advice: Sit back, take a nice deep breath, (maybe down a few shots of scotch), and really consider what you are about to do. Next, make a trip over to your local Jeep dealership and browse around. Look at how handsome the Jeep Wranglers are. The classic, rugged good looks, the option of driving with the top down, or even the windshield down, and the ability to go anywhere, even when there's no pavement! In buying a Jeep Wrangler, you will be joining the ranks of a long, time-tested brotherhood of Jeepers, and you will even be able to participate in the Jeep Wave. (When encountering another Jeep Wrangler passing in the opposite direction, it is customary to wave to each other). With a Jeep Wrangler, you can customize it, lift it, accessorize it, mount a winch on the front, get bigger tires, and do a million other things. Last, but not least, a new Jeep Wrangler can be had for around $24,000.

What other vehicle says, "Fun, Utility, Rugged Good Looks, or Classic Design," like a Jeep?

Your Friend,
[O|||||O]
 Frank

One thing can be said for Jeeps (normal Jeeps... not JGCs or JCs or JLs)...

They do hold their value in the latter years.
Whereas any sedan will depriciate to $500 regardless of condition, a Jeep seems to bottom out in the $5k-$8k range if it is well maintained.

Title: Re: falling into temptation
Post by Jeepgun on Nov 15th, 2004, 11:38am
A real Jeep is one that looks good with a thick coat of mud. Any other vehicle has to be waxed and polished and washed to make it look good. Jeeps are happiest when they are allowed to do the equivalent of growing their hair long and getting tattoos. (i.e. wearing mud, dirt, dust, and grime)

All of these new sedans are nothing but plastic. Go with something that will last! :)

Title: Re: falling into temptation
Post by john_d on Nov 15th, 2004, 1:21pm
Jeeps are awesome, but I don't think it would too comfortable for my hour (1/2 hour each way) daily commute.   Someone I looked up to as a kid had a CJ7 and he would take me mud-bogging with it, loads of fun.  ;)

You sure can.  ;;D

But, I have to warn you.............
my message only sounds good. We did not buy the Mercedes or the Lexus. For the price of one of those cars we can get 2 Toyota Sequois or 2 Dodge Hemi Magnums. Or one or each. We will probably settle for none. We really don't "need" a new car.

And most important is the fact that right now I have only $3.02 in my pocket. Can't even affort a Happy Meal.

Living payday to payday sucks. But it would be a lot nicer to do it in a new Jag.

Not quite. My wife's Toyota Highlander was built in Japan.
I drive a Dodge Dakota. Aren't they built in Canada? And the V8 engine is a Mercedes product.

And Jeeps are now a Chysler product. Chysler is controlled by Mercedes. Mercedes is German.
Guess where your money is going? But that is not to say that there is anything wrong with a Jeep. They are a good vehicle.

I used to be a strick "Buy American". But the Japanese engineering and quality have kicked the crap out of American badges.

BobG?  I am as disappointed as I can be right now.

Wish I could copy and paste like you guys do...I would get you pics of classic American cars.
Muscle cars..cruising cars..cars that got men dates...(even ugly guys)

Cars that only requiired a minimum of care and wax.    Cars you could actually get your hands into to change the oil filter or spark plugs.
Cars that did NOT require an expensive 100,000.00 machine to diagnose.  Just a shade tree and a six-pack of beer and all your friends were there.

Cars, that today when one "classsic" drives by....all heads turn and their thumbs are "UP" in a nostalgic moment.

Ree  If I get it the car will be either dark grey or black (what do you think?), I have not decided yet.  It has amazing sound, high-end 8 speaker speaker surround sound system with the ability to play DVD audio.  It also has XM radio built in.  It has a cool feature where it can use your cellphone if your cell phone has bluetooth (very common), you can make a call using buttons on the steering wheel and hear and talk through the car sound system.  It has dual zone ac that detects where the sun is so that both sides of the car are equally comfortable.  I plan to get it with a navigation system that has voice-activated controls for everything.   Ok, I'm getting pumped about this, I better shutup.  I am getting the car actually, I am in the process of getting the pre-approval from my bank now.  Sweeeeet.  ;;D

Melissa, afraid you're missing the point.  See, buying American keeps design, engineering, manufacturing JOBS and ultimately the $$$$$$$$$ in America.

Jeepgun got it right.  Now, it's another story if you do all the research and there's not a single American product that can compare.

For example electronics - no choice left -- Asia.

But most big ticket items can still be American made.  Just takes some will and don't pay attention to what the other guy buys.

I have 2 GM vehicles that I bought new back in '96 & '97 and they still both run great.  Very few problems along the way.  And, I feel good about my choices.

Starting to get long in the tooth though.  Might be out looking again - at American products...

uh, Marlin?  I did not miss the point.  Basically, yes, it'd be nice to buy EVERYTHING American made, but that is not realistic.  Especially when other items can be purchased that are more sophisticated and cost less that are developed by other countries.  Anyway, MY point in posting what I did, had to do with the fact that other countries are also bringing jobs HERE.

If I thought it was black and white like that I would buy an American brand auto.   It's not, and American brand does not equal American made anymore than foreign brand equals not American made.

Vote for people who are interested in protecting our livelihoods and do the best job possible at yours.  That's the best we can do.

But I am getting my Acura.  ;)

BobG?  I am as disappointed as I can be right now.

Damn it Linda. You haven't been signed on here for a week and you pick the one day I mention I drive a Dodge. Sorry you had to find out. :'(
The only reason I have it is because my wife got embarrassed by my old 175,000 mile '92 Ford pickup. I looked at the new Fords but they sucked. A V8 engine is not available in a Ranger. I also looked at all the other small trucks on the market. The engines available are pitiful to the point of being dangerous. Only Dodge offered a V8.
Please don't be too disappointed in me. If it means anything my hot rod is a Ford Model T with Ford Model A fenders and a '32 Ford grill. The engine and drive train is all Ford. And it is a car that can been worked on at home. No windows, no top, no radio, no air conditioner, no heater, no power steering, no power brakes and the seat is made of plywood.

The Jeep Gods are weeping bitterly, now...

I'll go see what I can do to console them. (Maybe I'll go get even more muddy...)  [smiley=laugh.gif]
