Post by Jonny on Nov 11th, 2004, 7:00pm State vows to keep Digging for culprit By Casey Ross Thursday, November 11, 2004Outraged by years of Big Dig blunders, top state officials promised to get to the root of problems that have made the massive highway project a laughingstock among taxpayers who are ready to declare it a $14.6 billion lemon. ``You wonder who in the world fell asleep at the switch,'' said Gov. Mitt Romney [related, bio], who learned of massive leaking in Big Dig tunnels while visiting Washington, D.C. ``I was appalled.'' On Beacon Hill, Attorney General Tom Reilly stood before pictures that showed water gushing into the northbound I-93 tunnel in September and threw up his hands. ``This shouldn't be happening,'' he said. ``This is a brand-new tunnel. I mean, look at this leak - just look at it!'' Reilly promised to hold Big Dig contractors and managers responsible for the blunders, but said his investigation into hundreds of leaks within the tunnels has only begun. Meanwhile, current and former Turnpike Authority officials who spent years with the project said they were frustrated that concerns they had been voicing for years only came to light when a gusher exploded in the I-93 tunnel. ``What's frustrating is that I saw this coming and I was being attacked from the left and the right,'' said Jordan Levy, vice chairman of the Turnpike Authority board who was fired and then re-hired amid Big Dig turmoil. ``There is a trail here, and it's getting hotter and hotter as we progress.'' ------------------------------------------------------------------ One day I could be sitting in traffic and the Atlantic ocean could come crashing down on me.
