Title: Spyware question Post by JDH on Nov 7th, 2004, 12:34am I'm really hatin' all of this Spyware and Adware crap! I use a free Yahoo program called Spybot but I'm not sure how thorough it is. Are there any free programs out there or should I buy one? Jim |

Title: Re: Spyware question Post by alleyoop on Nov 7th, 2004, 12:42am Spybot's not bad, although I'm not familiar with Yahoo's version. You might want to try Lava Soft's AdAware. Go to http://www.tom-cat.com/. You'll have plenty of choices and they are all explained well. This is a one stop site for all of your security needs and very trustworthy. ..............alley |

Title: Re: Spyware question Post by don on Nov 7th, 2004, 4:08pm Spybot is what I use and I would also advise downloading CWShredder. CoolWeb hijacked my browser and raised all sorts of hell. Strongly advise downloading it now in case you need it later. |

Title: Re: Spyware question Post by Longhaired Redneck on Nov 7th, 2004, 4:38pm Adaware by Lavasoft has a new relase 1.5 i think that is good, simple. Spybot needs to be used carefully since it will pick up backweb lite which is used by HP and Compaq. so be careful what you delete. Sometimes you also have to run the programs more than once. and your are right all this spyware sucks! |

I just got hit with a bunch of them that have shut down my CDROM drive and burner. Been trying for a week to get it all off. I got off the spyware, but haven't been able to reverse the damage. Backweb lite is spyware, it seems that manufacturers like to put it in there drivers now. If you disable HP's "hp schedule" from starting it should prevent any error statements. As far as I can figure this tells hp how much you use their products, I'm not sure about when you have an hp computer. Using spybots start up disable tool prevents programs from turning themselves back on. on 11/07/04 at 23:49:37, JDH wrote:
Surf safe, get Knoppix (http://www.Knoppix.net/), It runs off the CD which makes it virus and spyware free. If you have Win98/ me on the drive you can make a permanent home directory to save bookmarks and plugins on. If you have 2000/XP you will probably need a USB drive or a flash card to do this. If you upgraded your Zone alarm firewall the newer versions tend to disable CD-Burners. It can be a pain to fix. Opus/Paul |
