does any one have any info about gamma knife surgery ,i just had a facial nerve block that lasted for twelve hours and worked great, i suffer from chronic clusters. thanks, tbp38

From what I've read around here it is a short term solution to a long term problem that causes additiional long term problems.

The gamma knife is a machine that targets and corrects abnormalities in the brain, It destroys them without surgery by focusing 201 individual cobalt-60 sources on a target. Each of these sources enter the brain at a different place, so the tissue that they pass through receives only a very low dose of radiation and is not damaged. But the area where the rays converge receives a concentrated dose of radiation, modifying or destroying lesions. Gamma knife radiosurgery

Gamma knife is a form of neurosurgery in which the trigeminal nerve (the nerve that causes cluster headache) is injured by a beam of radiation. (See Figure 1) This procedure can be done as an outpatient and typically only takes several hours to complete. At present only a handful of medical institutions have gamma knife capabilities.

Only one study has looked at the use of gamma knife in cluster and the results were promising. What is attractive about this technique is that it can be done in an outpatient setting and appears to have a low complication rate. However, no one yet knows what the true delayed complications of gamma knife are, especially in young patients. The impression is that it works initially but there are high relapse rates (return of cluster pain) bringing to question if this treatment strategy is indeed useful in cluster. More studies are necessary.

A small study claimed relief in five of six patients within one week after gamma knife surgery.The Cleveland Clinic success rates are closer to 50%...and this is the surgical option I would recommend first.
