The rumor has been floating around that President Bush has planned to reinstate the draft in 2005. The following link says otherwise:

This is what sucks about a campaign that is this intense as it truelly brings out the worst in both parties. I live in a swing state (WI) and am being bombarded with BS from both sides.

Rumor has it that if you don't vote for Bush, God will be angry with you also but I have yet to find the link that clears that one up! :o

Back when i was a child 1966 the judge said son you can go to prison or you can join the Army.Shoulda gone to prison.

I couldn't agree more. It's been pretty ugly and disappointing on all sides... *sigh*

I remember going to Boy's State in the late 1970s - lots of talk floating around that the drinking age was going to be raised. Every single politician that visited Boys State agreed that a young man that was old enough to die for his country was old enough to buy an adult beverage. They went back to Springfield and raised the drinking age from 18 to 21.

The draft is the same way. Not a popular move. Not going to be advertised in advance, but if the time comes, it will be done. Not sure when that will be - Iran policy is the biggest wildcard - no way a major confrontation with Iran would not require a draft. Also depends on how much the neocon project for a new American century can push their agenda if Bush gets a second term.

Rumsfeld fired Thomas White (former Sec of the Army) for suggesting that an invasion of Iraq would require hundreds of thousands of troops and many years - the official policy was that 40-50 thousand would be enough, and that that number could be quickly reduced. General Shinseki also wanted more boots on the ground and was 'persuaded' to retire. Administration statements that a draft will not be needed don't inspire confidence, given their miscalculations in the past.

Yeah... It fuckin' sucked to be back in the United States on leave from Japan, having already fought in Panama at the age of 19, trying to buy a beer in Sacramento because I had a long layover between buses, only to be told that they couldn't/wouldn't serve me, even after I showed them my military ID. >:(

In Vietnam you had to be 21 to buy a case of beer at the PX. But, anyone could drink all they wanted in the enlisted clubs.

If you got drunk in the enlisted club and then got killed it was ok. But, if you got drunk on PX beer and got killed you'd get thrown in the Long Binh Jail.

Interesting how Kerry wants to give Bush the "credit" for proposing the draft, but it was Charley Rangle, a democrat from New York who sponsored and is pushing the bill.

Keep it volunteer.

Kinda hard having a volunteer army when we get 2 or 3 casualties a day. I will say never had a problem getting beer in Germany. 1977 to 80. or heroin. LOL

Just a couple things:

PLEASE George; try to bring back the draft. Please.... 8)

Years ago when they ended the draft, I read an interesting article that pretty much said that without the draft you don't have anyone to think twice about the service. They went on to say that there may be something good about having an army with just a few dissidents. Safer domestically perhaps.

Just interesting is all.
