Title: Sheer IGNORANCE!!
Post by Lizzie2 on Oct 5th, 2004, 11:11pm
Well tonight I had clinical from 4:30-11pm on the telemetry floor.  There was this one nurse working there who is in the pool...that means she works on lots of different floors, but gets paid more.  I was asking her about all the different floors and asking which she liked best.  It's great to hear everyone's different thoughts on nursing.

So at the end of the convo, I said...well I want to go into neuro I think!  Most people at Jefferson equate neuro nursing with cleaning up spinal cord injury patients who are incontinent.  Yeah it's a rough job...  So I said that I wanted to do headache neuro...thinking I'd get around that stereotype over the spinal patients because headache patients in the hospital are less maintenance...sometimes!

Anyhow...her response was, "Oh I would NEVER do that.  I have absolutely NO sympathy for those people!"

WTF?!?!?!  OMG I wanted to hit her.  I said that I have been inpatient at Jefferson 6 times.  She walked away.

Where in hell does someone get that idea?  Do they feel like headache sufferers did something to get this pain?  Do they feel we are lazy whiners who don't try to change or get better?  OH man...I sure as hell wish someone could explain this line of thinking to me because this REALLY made me angry...

Some nights, I don't like people much!!!   >:(

Dang it, Liz. I don't get it. So.....you ran into Nurse Wratchet. It's one less person competing for the job YOU want.
If you spend your day paying attention to arseholes, sooner or later you'll wind up as somebody's toilet paper.

LOL true, true.  But if she is ever MY nurse when I am in that hospital...I think I will request a different one.  Outside of that incident, she always seemed like a nice person.  Ah well!

Its a shame that people have that idea about headache sufferers of any kind.  I have to say I know exactly how you feel.  Though I take the time to come here and support many with Cluster.  To quote a great man who died yesterday " I get no respect" and its because I suffer from Migraine" a pain that sometimes dibilitates me for days.  Not the same intensity as CH but painful just the same and for longer.  So I hear ya Lizzie... people suck...
Just for an example. My pilot son Scott expert that he thinks he is sometimes, said that he thinks Dave gets his Ch attacks because he isnt hydrating himself... So I said.........OH SO EVERY TWO TO THREE YEARS ... DAVE SUFFERS FROM DEHYDRATION... its like beating a dead horse sometimes... I get tired and don't bother arguing anymore.   Keep up the good work.  But don't let them hold your CH against you.  I have had nurse friends lose their positions because of health issues and because they are honest about their health.   Good luck honey... and keep up the Neuro idea we need your expertise.   Ree

Thanks Ree,

I won't ever give up.  If you remember, I have had a migraine (chronic) since January 17, 2001.  And then I have the clusters on top of that.  If I make a comment about my pain level while I'm at work...they look at me like I am so full of crap.  They don't know... they really have no idea.

A couple months ago, my mom took me to the ER for very severe headache.  I had been having CH's all night and migraine as well...so at that point, I didn't know what in heck was going on.  After I said I was feeling much better, my mom said to me, "You know....you can't even tell how bad the pain is for you.  And then you look so relieved when it calms down some."  I guess that may work against me...I don't show the pain like some people do.  When I have the severe migraines, I don't cry or do the other things people do in the ER.  I just am very quiet...I deal with the CH the same way I always do...I'm usually shaking and rocking...pacing if I can.

I guess it is true that they just cannot, absolutely cannot understand this pain.  My friend Mike said that most people can knock out their headache with a couple advil, and they can't fathom the amount of pain that we suffer because they think that all headaches can be cured with advil.  Therefore, they think we are just intolerant to pain if we don't get relief and are still visibly upset about it.  Well...what they don't realize is that taking those advil would be like drinking a sip of water for both migraine and cluster.  Their home remedy cannot compare to the things we need to feel better.

OK...off the soap box now!  It still just makes me angry that she said that!!!  I might have to drop out of nursing school for awhile because of the joint problems/surgeries needed, but I do plan to finish.  I will work in neuro most likely!!!

Hugz,
Lizzie :)

You know Lizzie... with that response from her, it would have been interesting to ask her WHY she feels that way.

I guess if you do have to drop out you could still approach her and ask her.   At worst it will be amusing and at best, you  could print out some information and shove it in her face so she can get over her ignorance.

Even Nurse Ratchet has a soft spot under all the armor - I bet you'd be the one to crack it.

They just HATE it when that happens.   ;;D

Love you hon, sorry, you have a lot of patience - and good luck on the knee stuff.

I have to agree with your friend, most people think HA and think Advil.  I think that we (the general population) have been conditioned that if you have a HA, any HA, Advil will take care of it.  It is marketing pure and simple.  I'm not going to preach that we need more exposure, everyone knows that, but like I said in a different post.  Just one Brad Pitt, Oprah or (insert celebrity here) to get hit and have it go public, that would make a world of difference.  Especially, Oprah.  My God, can you imagine what exposure we would get if Oprah got hit?  There would be millions in an instant.  I don't wish them to get hit, not at all, but the we could really use the funding.  As for the nurse, she will never understand, will never try to understand because she has never had the experience.  I know quite a few people who have asked me, "What is a headache?"  and beenn quite serious about it.  Some people, the lucky few, never get even run of the mill normal headaches.  Now they are the freaky ones!!! ;;D

Until I began getting cluster headaches, I was one of those who never had so much as a tension headache. I don't know what to say, Carrie... There is no way you can convince anyone of what you, and other headache sufferers, go through. Eventually, life may teach her better.

I really feel that medicine is something that people are called to do, just as some people are called to be ministers or teachers. In the medical field, unfortunately, there are those who join for all the wrong reasons.

Don't waste your time on ignorant people. Just keep on being the very best you can be and all else will fall into place.

PFDAN to you, my friend.

Dissimilar, but also similar in a way, I work in customer service, complaints, for an airline.  Many would say they would not want to hear everyone's complaints everyday but there are some passengers who ARE very badly treated or mistreated handicapped persons that have legitimate complaints.  But there are some just whining and trying to get as much sympathy and compensation for being delayed an hour because they have a long list of reasons why THAT messed up their whole day.  So, each is an individual case, to generalize like she did about all headache patients and have that attitude would... get her replaced FAST where I work.

two cents with some pocket lint.

If I get a headache in 5 years, that's a lot.

Every hospital has a Clinical Educator.....some large hospitals have one for every different department.

We NEED to write to these people......especially the ER Departments.

Donna...it's funny because our ER department is better at dealing with it than most other places in the hospital!  Because we have the large headache center here, there is a protocol for treating people in the emergency department.  If they can't control the pain, they will admit you.  This is what was supposed to happen to me the last time I was in the ER there a few weeks ago, but I told the resident I would have to be out by Monday to go to clinical!  (It was earllllllllllly Sunday morning.)  We decided it wouldn't be worth it!

Now if I do have to drop out of school for my other surgeries, at least I will have time for a hospital admission finally to try to get my head under control!!  We'll see!

Take care,
Carrie :)

Liz,

Nurse Ratchet must've been my nurse, when I was at Jefferson. ;) I could be one of the reasons she "has no sympathy for those people". ;;D

I got on a lot of people's nerves at Jefferson, when I was cooped up there.

Jimmy

PS...I do get severe (not as severe as clusters but severe as headaches go) tension Headaches. Bad neck pain with those puppies.

Were you in for headaches?  I forget if you said you did that or something else.  This nurse mostly works in cardiology and some of the stepdown units.  You probably didn't run into her!  Although at the headache center itself....there are a couple there who could fit the bill of the scenario described above.  Only a couple that are truely heartless when working with patients sometimes, it seems.  That always discourages me when I have to call there or go there.

Ah well....All I know is what is in my heart.  My shift ended at 8:30 tonight, and I stayed until 9:30 helping my patient who had a bunch of problems all at once.  I love what I do, and nothing will change that.  I refuse to become one of those bitter people who winds up being cruel to others like that!  Not cool....

Hugz,
Lizzie

And Ree....Yes Carrie is my first name...Elizabeth is my middle name.  I prefer to go by my middle name! :)  Hugz

I was at Jefferson for 6 days in the Eric Lindros memorial suite. Never went there for Cardio, though. I had one nurse that was the best. She came i on the afternoon/evening shift. The one on the day shift was evil personified. I didn't see the overnight nurse too much. They had me so drugged...I slept like a baby. (Woke up every hour & cried for my mommy)

LOL that's right.  I was in that suite once too back in January 2002.  Who was your doc again?  I recently worked on that floor for 9 straight weeks.  I can't think of any of the day shift nurses who are evil personified, but maybe? hehe

Some nurses on the day shift are Sherry, Noreen, Diane, Amy, Sarah, Phyllis, and some others.:)  Oh...Mala is another one who I loved..she's great :)

Right now...I'm about an hour away from Jefferson...I'm in good ole Princeton, NJ. We'll have to have another PA/NJ meet & greet soon, though.

I can't remember the name of the Neuro or the day nurse at Jeff. But she was just very ignorant of Clusters. She kept trying to treat me as if I had a Migraine. She kept telling me the Pain can't be that bad, etc...wouldn't let me get coffee. Just a very bad disposition. This is back awhile though...late 1999, I think. Maybe she was just having a bad week. I know I was.

I too was pretty much headache free for most of my life. If I had a headache it never bothered me much, I rarley took asprin. Usually I'd forget about it and it would be gone.

Same thing in the hangover department, I would usually just be tired. I drink very little now.

Now it's a whole new ballgame with headaches. Even when I'm out of cycle my headaches are very bad.

I seen a Dr. once that had no sympathy for me. She told me all I had to do was quit smoking and all my problems would be solved. She basicly told me I was wasting her time. Sent me on my way without any meds.

Lizzie,

Oh Yeah.
Obviously [from the replies] we all know where yer coming from.
As someone who has worked in Psych and ERs for 14years..let me offer this:
Choose whom you confide in [as in at work-colleagues, etc.] VERY! carefully.

As alot of folk have commented:
a. Alot [too many for my f@+Xng liking!] go into Medicine or HealthCare for the WRONG [and, often, very sick..speaking clinically, as a Clinician] reasons.
b. You gotta go to HELL to know HELL.
c. Don't let any of your possible future 'Supervisors', and or co-workers, get any type of 'bead' on you..'cause they WONT get the 'right' one..[unless they too have lived CH/Migraine/etc]

The medical/health care field can be very nasty with lotsa nasty folk who wont hesitate a second to try and use your confiding in them against you.
Believe me.  I KNOW from experience.

I'm not trying to make you paranoid or anything.  Just choose wisely and be careful..and remember as some folk suggested:
You WILL make a better Nurse [re empathy and patient care] 'cause you KNOW what its like to be a 'patient' and have a chronic pain-condition...

And avoid so-called 'professionals' like the one yer describing; they are 'poisoned' and will do their best to poison all those around them with their lack of heart and spirit.

Though the idea of strapping her down and inserting a cardiac needle into her eyeball while dropping a cranial saw into one side of her brain sounds like it might be a good idea...dont waste yer time..

Let her Slide, while you Glide! at work.
She'll get no joy from work, whereas you will.
There's NOTHING like a sincere 'Thankyou' from a patient's eyes..she'll never experience that; you will.

Best of Luck and, hey, Be Careful out there!

The Dude
