Title: Orthopedic Appt results... Post by Lizzie2 on Oct 4th, 2004, 11:41pm Hey fam'ly, Well I went to see the orthopaedic specialist this morning at Univ of Penn with my dad. This was regarding the avascular necrosis in my knees which I have been mentioning was caused by steroid use, like Prednisone. I really liked the doc a lot...which to me is just about as important as how skilled they are at their profession!! He said the AVN in my knees is pretty severe, especially going straight down to the knee cartilage. He told me that Total Knee Replacements are definately in my future...but we are not sure when. He said drilling the bone in the knees doesn't have a lot of statistical evidence on whether or not it will save the joint, but it is often done to relieve the pain. This could possibly wait until May if I had a pain management strategy and we monitored it closely to make sure the joint hasn't collapsed. Now for the bad news.... He has only ever seen 2 patients who have AVN of the knees without having it of the hips, as well. I won't jump to conclusions yet because I won't know anything until after my bilateral hip MRIs on this Friday evening. Also, my hips do not have the extent of pain as my knees which is a good sign! However, if there is even a little AVN in the knees, I have to get the drilling right away. Within 1-2 years after AVN begins in the hips, the joint will collapse for 90% of patients if no intervention is made. To indicate how rapidly this moves, he told me that if my knee x-rays are over a month old, I will have to get new ones. This shit moves fast!!! If I get the drilling right away, then I will have to drop out of school after this semester. The rest of school will be on hold until maybe the next year. I would have to be on crutches for 6 weeks with 50% weight bearing. That means no clinical which means no school! But it gets better.... If the joint is showing any evidence of collapse...it means I have to get total hip replacements right away! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh I never knew this could happen at my age!!! I really WILL be the bionic woman!!! OK....I am not going to worry about all of the implications of this until after the MRI on Friday evening. I'm breathing!! Say a prayer if you pray...or just think happy thoughts, maybe!!! Hugz, Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Orthopedic Appt results... Post by Tiannia on Oct 5th, 2004, 3:16pm Hun I am so sorry. You are damn right you will be in my thoughts. There are not any other treatments besides the drilling? It seems stupid that will all the high tech crap they have now a days, that their only corse of action is replacement. I wish you luck hun. My Dad has had 5 different knees put in in the past 15 years. And lots of complications. I pray that you dont have those as you are so young. Take care of yourself, School will still be there. In my thoughts, with love and light... -Tia |

Title: Re: Orthopedic Appt results... Post by Opus on Oct 5th, 2004, 7:24pm Lizzie, You have been through so much pain even before this, then you decided to change your life and take on a class work load of two students, and so far you have succeeded in it all, you are strong beyond a normal persons endurance. Now this, I will be praying for a complete spontaneous recovery like he doctors have never seen before, but also if need be that this will not progress in the least and you will be able to finish school. Wen you become a nurses you will be the most caring anyone has seen. You will be able to connect with patients, and be able to help them and encourage them. Take care and remember that you have many at your side through this. Opus/Paul |
