Title: prednisone Post by john_d on Oct 3rd, 2004, 9:15am I keep hearing horror stories involved with this drug. Is this stuff incredibly dangerous for clusterheads or what? Should the site warn others? I don't have any experience with it myself outside the really bad things I hear about here. John D |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by Lizzie2 on Oct 3rd, 2004, 9:57am I'd just weigh the risks and benefits if I were you. :) I always thought I could handle the risks until this most recent medical diagnosis. Ehhhhh chit happens! Now I'd rather have the CH's than the many surgeries in my future! But also...pred never stopped my cycles...it just would give me a few days off. If it were to stop my cycle completely, I probably wouldn't have cared about the problems it caused. But then again, if it had stopped my cycle completely, I wouldn't have had to keep taking it, and I probably wouldn't be where I'm at now with the knees! You have to decide if it is worth it! :) Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by Jimmy_B on Oct 3rd, 2004, 10:37am Prednisone is a drug that needs to be tapered slowly when it is stopped. I have had good luck with the Medrol Dose Pack, that I take at the beginning of a cycle. Any drug can be dangerous, if not used properly. Before I start any drug I research & then research some more. When I'm done researching, I ask questions of my Doc & Pharmacist. This also goes with O.T.C. drugs. Also having a very knowledgable physician helps. Jimmy |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by eddie on Oct 3rd, 2004, 10:37am i have taken it off and on since i was 23 now im 40. yes i can tell what it has done to me. its an oxy- morone its good & bad. if you go look in a PDR [wallmart has them ] you wouldnt believe what it says. i have done the pred 3 times this summer it just will not break mine this time yes im chronic and it sucks. i can tell you lifetime of prednisone is not good for ya. i take supplements to help, but i just know i read alot about pred yrs ago and more recently. it also will mess up different organs in your body if you dont take it right. i have been in this CH cycle for almost 400 days, i do use verapamil o2, imitrex and did pred taper 3 times just this past summer. i think you can only take so much in a years time. CLUSTERBUSTER is what i need / i hope to hear from anyone about it to help me out till i can proccure my own. dont want to scare anyone but check the PDR {PILL BOOK FOR DOCS} and make your own jugdement. PFDAN TO ALL& HUGS |

Hey Jimmy, Not trying to play devil's advocate or anything, but you know where I go for headache treatment. :) I've never once had an inappropriate taper. All have been about 7 days or so in length, starting at around 60-70mg and tapering over the course of the week. Somewhere along the line though..my body said no! :) I do think it can be helpful, but it is not without risks! Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by vig on Oct 3rd, 2004, 10:54am It works wonders at GREAT expense. It causes long term damage. I vote no. |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by Jeepgun on Oct 3rd, 2004, 11:09am I was prescribed prednisone for my last cycle. I got the script filled, but didn't take it. I really don't know why I didn't take it, other than experiencing a strong inner "nudge" that I should leave it alone, so I did. In hindsight, I'm glad. I think I would choose the clusterbusters method over prednisone, if I absolutely couldn't stand the pain anymore. -Frank |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by JDH on Oct 3rd, 2004, 11:54am I've used Prednisone and it gave me a short break until I started tapering down then I was right back to where I started. IMO the long term risk are not worth a few pf nights. there are better ways to deal with this. Jim |

I wasn't trying to suggest that your problems with Pred. were caused by Physician failure or inappropriate tapering. I apologize if it came out that way. Just wanted to make sure that John really researches this med before making a decision. Do ya forgive me [smiley=mellow.gif] Jimmy |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by totka on Oct 3rd, 2004, 2:40pm First drug which works for me. It stopped my last cycle on the first day. Hungarian cluster-ass-kick therapy is Solu-Medrol (IV) and Medrol pills 500 mg tapered to 8 mg in two weeks. |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by Kris_in_SJ on Oct 3rd, 2004, 8:56pm I think it's a great drug when taken rarely for episodic clusters. Really helps me until my prevent (Verapamil) has kicked in. Side effect for occasional Prednisone (proper taper down) use - EXTREME HUNGER. Side effects for frequent or prolonged Prednisone use - TOO MANY TO MENTION. I think you have to weigh it out. If you've never (or rarely) taken it, it might very well help you in your cycle. I don't think it works this way for chronic CH (as above testimony says). Good luck! Kris |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by Patrick_A on Oct 3rd, 2004, 10:54pm Prednisone and Verapamil stopped mine in its tracks and i have now been painfree for 13 months. Pred definitly has some awful side-effects but so does putting a shotgun to your head due to losing patience with the CH's. Patrick |

Title: Re: prednisone Post by chris on Oct 28th, 2004, 1:43am Have taken it once or twice a year for 5 years, when the verapamil and lithium quit working. Just stay on it for about a week with orw/0 a taper. I tried both no reaction that was different, but doctor will recommend a definite taper. No side effects except for sore gums. Even though I am chronic it stops those really extra tough cycles when lith and verap wouldn't. I personally think it's great if used properly and not for long periods. |
