Title: Nervous! (Updated 9/27) Post by Lizzie2 on Sep 26th, 2004, 7:57pm Well tomorrow is finally my appointment with my rheumatologist, and my dad is coming down here to go with me. It looks like osteonecrosis/avascular necrosis is the major problem...which is definately not good! The MRIs showed 2 areas of "bone infarct" aka bone death, in the left knee. The right knee had 3 areas of the infarct going through the marrow, and also a tear in the lateral meniscus. AHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh trying not to worry...but my stomach is sinking! I'm hoping that they will be able to wait on surgery until I can graduate in May because I really don't want to quit nursing school!! Thoughts, vibes, whatever would be appreciated! Thanks! Lizzie |

Title: Re: Nervous! Post by Jeepgun on Sep 26th, 2004, 8:08pm Sending the vibe squadron over your house, Lizzie. If worse comes to worse, you won't have to drop out, right? I mean, you can go back again and pick up where you left off, right? Anyway, prepare for the worst but expect and hope for the best. Hugs and vibes to you, my friend. -Frank |

Title: Re: Nervous! Post by Lizzie2 on Sep 27th, 2004, 3:57pm Thanks a bunch for all the thoughts. Diagnosis confirmed of Avascular Necrosis...worse in the right knee than the left. Also a torn meniscus in the right knee. He said it is like having multiple heart attacks to the knee and now the bone is dead. First major implication: No more steroids...no matter what. PREDNISONE caused this. :( Second major implication is that I have to go see an orthopedic surgeon. He didn't think that it will require surgery yet, but he doesn't know. That is going to be up to ortho. What a pain in the A$$. My dad is dropping the films off to our ortho either today or tomorrow, and hopefully I will speak with my doc soon! Thanks again for all the support. Sorry this is brief...I have clinical in a half hour so I have to get ready and finish an assignment! Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Nervous! (Updated 9/27) Post by Jeepgun on Sep 27th, 2004, 4:11pm Carrie, the good news is that it won't require surgery, so at least your studies won't be interrupted. Hopefully, more good news will be forthcoming. Damn prednisone... My last cycle, my GP prescribed me a prednisone taper and verapamil. I got both scripts filled, but I never touched the prednisone. I didn't know anything about it at the time, but had this internal "nudge" to avoid it. I'm glad I did. Hang in there. Hopefully, even without prednisone you can get some (relatively) pain-free time. Title: Re: Nervous! (Updated 9/27) Post by Lizzie2 on Sep 27th, 2004, 4:14pm Actually...it might still require surgery, and it will definately require surgery at some point. Just not sure when!! If I can wait till May, that would be best... |

LOL yep I just got my copy of the reports today. I told my friend Mike and he said I will be the bionic woman by the time this is done with all metal knees! ;) Hell I'm smiling now...I'll be able to deal with it! All's I know is that the doc told me today that the more I am on my feet, the worse it is going to get. Hrmmmmmm...I'm on my feet with nursing for at least 8 hours 5 days of the week! I sit in class the other 2. Well... I guess I'll take my chances!! The patient I had tonight reminded me of the reasons why I do this. I really love it...even if it means knee replacement is sooner than I'd like!! Thanks again :) |

Title: Re: Nervous! (Updated 9/27) Post by Lizzie2 on Sep 28th, 2004, 11:36am Thanks both of you :) Means a lot! I'm waiting for the ortho to call...hopefully today or tomorrow! My mom and I were talking about it this morning. I think what we want to do at minimum is get the arthro surgery to shave the meniscus in order to relieve pain. I'll deal with the rest of it depending on what the ortho says. Meniscus surgery shouldn't be tooooo bad, I wouldn't think! I may be able to do that around Thanksgiving or Christmastime. Keep your fingers crossed! :) |

Title: Re: Nervous! (Updated 9/27) Post by sadwife on Sep 28th, 2004, 11:19pm Lizzie, I have only found this sight as of last night, but as I always believe in life, God leads me where I need to be. I understand the sickness in your stomach as you agonize over your visit, but have faith, pray to God for a miracle and expect it to happen. Also understand our miracles don't always come in the form we desire. On October 20, 1998 I gave birth to my youngest daughter, after months of doing everything the right way and walking on eggshells, I had to deliver by emergency C-section 7 weeks early. My daughter was great in size 5 lbs 4oz, 19 1/2 inches in length, but I was told early the next morning to spend all the time I could because they were giving her 3 days to live (nothing was developed internally). Without going into great detail, I can say it was God and God alone who performed a true miracle in our lives. I will pray for you as well, and ask that our church family prays too. Keep faith your healing may be on the way. sadwife |
