The Bible is my favorite book. You have murder, lust, adultury, theft, deceictfullness, honesty, good people, miricles, etc. just like a modern day soap opera. |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by FZfan on Sep 23rd, 2004, 12:46pm It may be hard to find, but to this day it is still one of the most fascinating/different sci-fi stories I've ever read... The Riverworld Series by Philip Jose Farmer 1st book - To Your Scattered Bodies Go You MUST start with this one before reading any of the others. 2nd book - The Fabulous Riverboat. There are three or four other books in the series, but these first two pretty much set up the rest of them. Sci-fi channel actually did a movie based on the first two books last year. It was pretty good, but I got the feeling that someone watching it without having read the books would be lost and probably not like it. Plus they didn't cover very much of the first book, focusing mostly on the second one. |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by IndianaJohn on Sep 23rd, 2004, 1:05pm I like the "wheel of time" series by Robert Jordan. It's fantasy adventure typre novels about six kids that become part of the classical struggle of good vs. evil. It's very well written and there are ten novels in the series. Once you get past the first chapter, it really takes off. It kept me occupied for a month ;;D PFDAN! John |

"Angels & Demons" is fantastic. :) I've got another one of his, but I have to finish, "Blowfly" by Patricia Cromwell first. I'm also reading Brother Lawrence's, "Practicing The Presence Of God," and finding it very interesting. "Illusions," by Richard Bach "The Prophet," by Kahlil Gibran "Conversations With God," (first book) by Neale Donald Walsch "A Course In Miracles" "How To Know God," by Deepak Chopra "The Heart Of The Mind," by Jane Katra and Russell Targ "The Soul's Code; In Search Of Character & Calling," by .... Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by Charlie on Sep 23rd, 2004, 2:25pm I have history stuff here so that's probably not your cup of tea. Lots of SF read around here. I do like SF by Larry Niven. Some of it has a little humor but it's usually based on hard science. His "Known Space" stories can be fun. His big one is "Ringworld." For something light, Keith Laumer wrote a lot of pretty funny SF. Not very technical but I enjoyed his lunacy. I haven't read much new fiction in a long long time. Some modern histories can be interesting. Stuff by David Halberstam can be enjoyable. I'm reading his "The Fifties" at the moment. Hope you get a break soon. Charlie |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by firebrix on Sep 23rd, 2004, 4:59pm If you enjoy a L O N G read, Stephen Donaldson's double trilogy "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever" will keep you entertained for a while. Altho' these books have been compared to Tolkien, they are quite different from LOTR - but have wonderful use of language, amazing tales and as you proceed thru' the books, you get more and more involved. Highly recommended, and Covenant's condition is certainly something CHers will relate to. Rchard Bach's books "Bridge across forever" and "Illusions" are good too, but as books are very close to my heart, I'd better stop here! Happy days firebrix |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by StueyStu on Sep 23rd, 2004, 5:24pm Patricia Cornwell rocks and rolls. Her chief medical examiner of Viriginia is great reading. The last few books were so intense. I just bought her newest but haven't started reading it. She's one of those though that her books sorta evolve and you sorta want to read them from the beginning books up. I was told not to read "Southern Cross or Isle of Dogs". But other than that those maybe she is great. |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by Jeepgun on Sep 24th, 2004, 8:41am Oh yes: Anne Rice ROCKS!! (I would steer clear of the books she wrote under a pen-name, though. "Exit To Eden," and her, "Beauty Trilogy." ) Ugh.. Dreadful stuff. Her books on the Mayfair witches are magnificent, but the first book takes a long time to get through. "Blackwood Farm," is the latest in that series, and wow.... What an amazing book! Great writer.... |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by PittsburghJoe on Sep 24th, 2004, 4:36pm I'll third the Dark Tower series... I haven't gotten book 7 yet, but it's next on my list! And yeah, if you're a fan of fiction, you could read the GOP Propaganda that is "Unfit for Command." I hear it's an interesting tale by people who have NO hidden agenda at all! </sarcasm> I won't turn this into a political rant, so I'll end that line of discussion there. Some others I've always enjoyed: Anything by Stephen King or Anne Rice The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett Anything by Douglas Adams Anything by John Irving (Esp. The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany and A Widow for One Year) Tons of others... I read for escape, though I've been known to read to expand my horizons as well... Joe |

Title: Re: I need a good book, what's your favorite? Post by Ree on Sep 24th, 2004, 4:37pm I love Stephen King although I get pissed off when he kills kids like in Cujo... Pet Cemetary etc... anything Dean Koontz is great... Door to December was great. VC Andrews series Flowers in the Attick, Petals in the Wind etc was good too. My all time favorite book is "The Other Side of Midnight" by Sidney Sheldon I read that like 25 years ago or something. I just read Tell No One by Marlan Coben... it was cool. I tried to start the DiVinci code and got side tracked and kept falling asleep. Everyone says its great if you get through the first chapter. For some strange reason I can't... I am now reading 2 books (and you didnt think I was deep)The 4 agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and I highly recommend it and Jar Head written by a gulf war veteran Anthony Swafford...(Sean is making me read it, and its not for the weak or timid...or the swear free either. I wonder if this guy kisses him mom with that mouth) nuff said just read its good for you to..............love your mom ree |
