Title: Re: Prednisone, should I???? Post by don on Sep 16th, 2004, 3:47pm I wouldn't start it at all if you are not a week or two into a good preventative. Once thats done I wouldn't hesitate. What to expect? Expect to be on a first name basis with every single employee at Burker King within a week. Expect your neighhbors to be putting up flyers looking for their lost pets. (burp) Expect escalators to abruptly stop about half way up. Expect the gas milage to drop in your vehicle. Expect to have to purchase two tickets on South West Airlines. Get on a preventative then do the taper. Attack early! |

Title: Re: Prednisone, should I???? Post by karma on Sep 16th, 2004, 3:50pm If you need to go the medication route with pred then it may be a good idea to start with the verapamil for a few days then start the pred taper. The verapamil seems to help allot of people as a prevent. Pred never really had any affects on me but then I started a 50 mg/day and went down to 10 over five days. I'm not sure if it worked or not. I was near the end anyway. Check with your doc. Try a couple red bulls. Quite a few people have been helped by it lately. |

Post by Reese on Sep 16th, 2004, 4:15pm Im already on atenolol for high blood pressure.I did suggest to dr. vermapril and he said atenolol was better for me.Blood pressure averages 130/90 on medication(atenolol, accupril, diuretic). With those readings triptans are a no-no(I guess).Im sayin no to the prednisone for at least the next couple days. Head-pain really sucks. |

Title: Re: Prednisone, should I???? Post by TxBasslady on Sep 17th, 2004, 12:05am Reese, Considering that CH affects each of us differently, it should also be understandable that different meds work in different ways also. I had a great experience with the Prednisone. I had no preventative.....and the Prednisone worked for me from the time I took the first dosage. I was on a 12 day taper, and started at 60mg a day. The only problem I ever had with it, was at the very end of the taper. The first day after the taper, I had an anxiety attack of sorts. It only lasted a few hours, and then all was ok. For 197 days, I was totally PF. No CH, no shadows, no nothing. Day 198, I did have a CH. That was around the end of March (this year). From March to August I did have several attacks, but for the most part, they were not high on the Kip scale. I started taking Melatonin before bed, and I have been able to pretty much control the CH with the Melatonin and Excedrin Migraine. I went into cycle August 12th, and still have been able to keep the CH under control. This doesn't work for everyone.....just like the Pred and the side effects. But it worked for me....and those 197 PF days were absolutely glorious. I would take it again, if I felt that I needed too. Guess you have to make the choice, but try and keep an open mind, and remember.....what works for one does not necessarily work for another....also, one may have bad side effects, and the next person may not. For most folks here, when they end the taper, the CH comes back. Guess I'm an exception......however, you may be too. Hope things improve for you. Do what you think you need to. I know the meds can be a bit scarey, but the meds are a helluva lot better than suffering thru the pain. PF vibes, Jean |

Jean knows what she's talking about. Pred's only a transitory drug. At best. The idea is to keep you PF and working, until the prevents kick in and starts doing it's thing. If you don't have a valid prevent, then the Pred is MOOT. It causes roundness of face, loss of calcium in your bones, appetite insanity, bloating and high stool.. It may work great, but the price tag may be a pisscutter....(especially for you aging sucks....and you know WHO you are....) Your drug cocktails will be your own business. The important thing to remember is that you have a CHRONIC illness.......even if you are a ruddy episodic. This crap will be back time and time again. That's chronic in my book. Figure out how to deal with it NOW. Tomorrow will come, and it'll be all to soon. Planning is everything, RJ |
