Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Jeepgun on Sep 13th, 2004, 7:29am Hello, James. Bupropion is a godsend!! (Trade names are primarily Zyban and Wellbutrin). See if she will prescribe a generic brand, and write the script for chronic bronchitis or mild depression. This will make it much cheaper from an insurance billing standpoint. Use that in conjunction with the nicotine patch, (Nicoderm CQ, or Walmart's "Equate" brand), and it makes quitting a breeze. You can do it! Day 13, here.... -Frank |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by rubberplant on Sep 13th, 2004, 7:33am Thanks Frank, She said last time (I tried to quit) that because of epilepsy she won't give me Zyban. AAAAAARRRGGHH! I know it's not a cure but it seems to help people. She will give me patches. She did last time. I guess gum could help fill in the time as well. Keep going, I'm joining you. Gonna do it this time!!!! cheers, james |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Jeepgun on Sep 13th, 2004, 7:56am Okay, James: If you can't do the Zyban thing, check out some books by Allan Carr. "How To Quit Smoking Permanently," and some of the others he's written. Get involved with a smoking cessation site. Check out this website: http://www.quitsmokingonline.com/ Good luck! -Frank |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Sep 14th, 2004, 12:01pm Okay... I think my time is coming. Out of the blue this morning, a close friend of mine who is the associate pastor/music director at our Church called to talk for a while. Asked me to play guitar at Church this Sunday and ended the conversation by telling me that he felt the need to pray for me to quit smoking. I'm one of those people that needs to set a date though. Sept 20th sounds like a good date to me, sooner if I really get the urge. There...I put it in writing. Now I need to grow a spine and stay true to my word. I'll be joining you guys soon. Pat |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Tiannia on Sep 14th, 2004, 12:02pm Tooth picks where my staple. Especially in the car as I was always used to smoking while I was driving. so I started chewing on Toothpicks. Still now 8 years after quitting I still have them in my car, at my desk at work, downstairs at home and upstairs by my computer. I have to agree with unsolved. Cut back on the number of cigs you smoke until you are down to less then 10 (preferrable less then 5) a day and then stop cold turkey. Once you go 5 days the nicotin is out of your system and all it is after that is will power. I cant see how the patches really help because it is keeping your body dependant on nicotine. You have to want to quit. It is not easy. I am not one of those ex smokers who say that it is easy. Good Luck -Tia |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by rubberplant on Sep 14th, 2004, 2:49pm I totally agree it is willpower. If I could show you a picture of the two people I'm doing this for ( after me, that is. ) then you'd see I had enough going for me to realise that time is to stop. the National Health Service over here actually GIVE you the patches to help you wean yourself off the nicotine , Big patch, little patch, even littler patch. I cut down from over twenty to about five over the last ten days. now I've stopped for almost SIX hours! (Better than I have ever done !) And over the next month will slowly have my nicotine intake cut as well. Do it Pat, I think this is going to be the one thing I am ever going to want to shake my own hand over and thank myself for. But read all the literature as well. I found loads on-line but nothing beats the support and advice here! I have to go and feed the bubba-boy Jacob and get the little tyke off to bed. Must get my site up soon and show Pic. I know every hates looking at other peeps babies, but what the hell. james |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Melissa on Sep 14th, 2004, 3:53pm Honestly James, I believe it isn't willpower that makes the quit permanent. I think it is a combination of self discipline and mind conditioning. Conditioning your mind to change the way you think, has got to be the most difficult thing in the world, but it CAN be done. As I've said before, it's 10% nicotine addiction, but 90% psychological. If you can work on changing your way of thinking, habits and attitude, you'll be more successful than trying by willpower alone. Good luck, and post or email one of us before you light up! It'll give you time to think about what it is your doing to harm yourself and those around you, while you wait for responses. ;) :)mel |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Charlie on Sep 14th, 2004, 8:59pm You have epilepsy as well? Yikes. I do too but I haven't had a CH attack since 1991 when I was 45. I can't say that about the seizures. >:( I quit smoking in 1980 after smoking about 30 per day. There weren't any patches that I know of back then. All I can say is to stay aware for liquor for several months. That worked for me. After four months I had no trouble with it. Good luck and it sounds like you're serious. Charlie |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by rubberplant on Sep 15th, 2004, 5:36am morning Guys and Gals, Had crap time getting to sleep, Kept thinking about smoking! I knew this morning would be the hardest point as I used to (til today) have a breakfast of champions, Cigarette and strong, black coffee. Needless to say I am having to recondition myself out of that habit. Didn't go into the kitchen. It helped. 20 hours and 30 mins. Not smoked 17 cigarettes and saved £1.71 and nearly an hour and a half of my life. Rachel said, "That's an hour and a half more that Jacob and I get to spend with you!" Forget LOL, I feel more like weeping out loud! It's not until you do something like this that you realise what it and you mean to others around you. Anyway I don't want to turn CH.com into a smoking message board or even a website for emotional Brits trying to quit! Will keep you all informed. Oh get this, The Smoking nurse said, "Oh don't think about your CH's, you'll just bring one on." I can't take some people. Thank you all, James |

Title: Re: Tips for quitting smoking?!? Please!?! Post by Jeepgun on Sep 15th, 2004, 7:42am James, there are lots of quit smoking sites out there, with forums and plenty of resources, and people who understand what you're going through. (I certainly do!) Also, if you are in the UK, look for books by Allan Carr. He's a British guy who's written a number of wonderful books on smoking cessation. Best wishes to you. -Frank |
