Title: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Charlie on Sep 13th, 2004, 3:18am It took me five minutes to open this. Something has slowed my puter down to a crawl. I've done some maintenance and stuff but so far, no dice. Something to do with adware I think but it wasn't clear to me how to deal with it. Anyway; I'm around but posting makes no sense. >:( Rats Charlie >:( |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by clarence on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:35am Charlie, You probably already are on top of this, but I found this by searching for adware removal: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button I've never used it...I use a Mac so I couldn't, but if its adware or spyware that is causing a problem, I think cnet gives it a good review. Just trying to help. Casey |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Mark C on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:48am Hya Charlie, I am assuming you are using Internet Explorer. You can get the latest version a AdAware here. (http://files1.majorgeeks.com/files/36c5d795235ef304afd54a4c84934d00/spyware/aawsepersonal.exe) Install, then update, then run and let it remove what it finds. I have had no problems on MANY pc's but if you do it has the ability to un do what it removes. If this don't help let me know....I have many weapons in my arsenal.... [smiley=bigguns.gif] Safe Surfing, Mark |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by firebrix on Sep 13th, 2004, 3:44pm O Charlie - what a bummer. Nasty, nasty malware on your lovely new computer. It happened to me too. Ad Aware is a very useful program for Internet Exploder users - removed up to 17 files each time I web surfed. I was shocked. A friend suggested I try another browser so I run Opera on the laptop and Mozilla's Firefox on the PC. Since then, I have had NO adware or spyware for Ad Aware to find!! Maybe you could try one of these? Firefox is very similar to IE and even imports all your Favorites in one hit. You can set them both up to remove cookies after every session if you want to. Of course, nothing is 100% safe............ we need to be vigilant these days. (No, Charlie, not vigilante!!!) Hope you've sorted it out by now. Happy fast d/ls to you and happy days firebrix |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Charlie on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:32pm Rats. I don't get this. This is the only thread that seems a little better. The rest are slower than dirt. I know this is nuts. This thing says it quarantined 28 items. What is doesn't do is tell me to exit or "finished" or something. I'm not sure I'm doing it right. What I have now is Adaware Personal I think. Nothing's every easy :-/ Charlie |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Mark C on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:33pm Are ya running XP there Chaz? If so....I have a few "presents" for you. I can button up XP tighter than Dick's hatband! Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get ya! ;) Mark |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Charlie on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:46pm Rats. I still don't get this. It took me 2:30 to open Svenn's Magman thread, 1:00 to start my reply and a whole bunch to post and get back to the list. Not counting my typing about 9 minutes. Getting here was a bit faster. I'm running XP but I'm not sure what you're saying Mark. I need something. Maybe a drink. Thanks, Charlie |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by john_d on Sep 13th, 2004, 4:57pm Hey Charlie, If you are running XP and you have backup turned on you can go back a day and that fixes it right up usually. from the start menu, got to 'all programs\accessories\system tools\system restore'; if it is not enabled it will not have saved a backup for you to restore to. Got to hate that adware. John D |

Title: Re: Slower and slower Not CH Post by Rock_Lobster on Sep 13th, 2004, 5:18pm Try this Charlie... Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete The Windows Task Manager will pop up Hit the 'Processes' tab You will see a column called 'CPU'. Does anything in that column read a high number, other than 'System Idle Process'? If so, report what it is here. Also, highlight that row and click 'End Process' a few times. That make things better? Let us know. If so, we will figure out how to fix you up. |
