Hi All

Yesterday I went and picked up my first tank of O2, just in time for two ch attacks last night. The results of the O2 were fantastic. But when I picked it up they didn't have a non re-breather mask for me just a regular one that has two sets of holes on the side. So when I breath in I am also sucking in air and when I breath out the O2 is still pumping in and I am thinking am I wasting half of my O2 ?

Does a non re-breather mask have the O2 go into a bag and when you breath out it goes out a check valve and then closes and when you breath in does it stay closed and you breath in straight O2 from the bag, is that how it works ????

Hi there Dave,

What you have is called a simple face mask. It only delivers about 35-50% O2 when run at a flow rate of 6-12L/min.

A nonrebreather would serve you much better! A nonrebreather does have the bag which fills up with O2. When you breathe out, the air you breathe out goes out the flaps on the sides, and then the flaps close back over the vents so that air does not come back into the mask. Nonrebreather masks deliver about 97% O2, so I'd definately go for that one.

You've got the right idea with the NRB mask. Having trouble getting a decent mask these days. The ones supplied are pieces of crap. They're not allowed to give out masks in an open bag, so I tore one open in their office and showed them how the damned backflow valve didn't work worth a rat's patute. Their response: "It's Not Our Fault! That's the way they come." So change suppliers, ya nitwits.

On a more positive note, it's no problem getting by w/o a mask. Stick the tube in the mouth, pinch ye olde nose shut, and huff ho.

or tape the holes over and lift the mask off your face when you breathe out

Monday night a doozy came out of nowhere and ramped up quickly... so I go to my tank and grab my mask.

Thing just doesn't feel right?? I look inside and the disc that is supposed to prevent backflow fell off and was gone...

I just ripped the mask off and sucked from the tube letting the O2 just fill my lungs. It took a little getting used to but it brought on relief.

I think pleanty of people do this technique.

I'm just curious if there is any evidence to this being "better" or worse than a non-reberather mask. Is it dangerous? Felt funny only because it wasn't as controlled but got used to it. I guess you can control the breathing by turning on and off the valve....

We already know that the non-rebreather mask is 100% better than the regular mask.

That's ok...makes it a partial rebreather mask. Not quite as effective, but still works.

My advice would be to get another mask, though!

I'm sure you're right Nurse Lizzie ;) Will seek another mask out plus it won't scare my fiance as much. She's afraid of me just inhaling straight form the tube.

Basically yeah...the only difference between a partial rebreather and a nonrebreather is pulling that little tab off the top of the bag. A partial rebreather provides 40-60% O2 run at 5-10LPM.

I would like to hear from everyone who has experience using O2 on the following question:

Have you ever noticed O2 works better if
a) you breathe in through your nose;
b) you breathe in through your mouth;
c) it makes no difference.

Slowly through the nose seems to work the best.

I just got home from work with only one attack.

Thank you all very much for the info my next 2 questions were, one exactly that marfanoidus asked !

Is it better to breath through the mouth or nose or deep breaths or shallow or which is best ?

Thanks again for all of the responses and my second question since I have a lousy mask is that the hose that goes into the mask has two holes in it ?

So I can breath normally with the O2 shut off !!!!
That right there tells me that I am only getting again 50% of my O2 even when the side vents are taped up.

So now what tape those holes too ?
