Title: I need med advice quickly
Post by davebrick on Sep 3rd, 2004, 12:06pm
Hi all

I am going through a cluster right now and I didn't expect them to hit for another month.

Before they hit I was going to come back to this site and do some research on what other people use to combat these cluster headaches, unfortunatley I have run out of time and they are here now. (right this minute) so if my spelling is off that is the reason, I can barely look at my monitor.

So on that note I have to go and see my doctor this morning and I was wondering what is the most popular med that other people are taking for these clusters ??????????

Any advice would be greatly appreiciated .

Dave

Abortives:
Imitrex-Injection, Nasal Spray, Tablets, Quick disolves
Zomig-Tablets, Nasal Spray
Oxygen with non-rebreather mask

Prednisone to end the cycle quicker

Do a quick search or click the medical link on the right, I'm probably leaving out a bunch but I am just getting over my 3rd for the day.

Prednisone taper alows the preventative (i.e. verapamil ) med time to get into your system.

Abortives.
first line: O2 with non-rebreather mask at a minimum of 8 lpm.

Second line: Imitrex nasal spray or injections.  Avoid tablets of Imitrex, they can take a looooong time to work.  I prefer the nasal sprays myself.

Pred may or may not end the cluster quicker depending on where you are in your cycle.

Hope this helps and you get some relief soon.

John

verapamil as high as 960mg and lithium as high as 900mg.  You don't have to go that high or start that high but don't be surprised if you end up needing to increase your dosages a few times before they kick in.  Just becuse these meds might not work seperatly many report great sucess when using them as a combo.
