Post by Tiannia on Sep 2nd, 2004, 11:29pm
Well first appointment they could get me in for was 1st week of Oct. But I have a note that as soon as they have a cancelation that they weill call me so I can get in sooner...   :-/  Well at least it is an appointment.

Now just have to see him to get me my referal to a neuro.

I'm learning .. take it all a day at a time and dont look at it like it is 4 weeks away.

Hi Tia,
Forgive me for missing how you lost your HMO and then were able to get it back, but it makes me wonder if there may be ways to speed up this process.
Is your HMO through your employer? Whether or not it is, did you receive a booklet with doctors to choose from?
Just in case you do have a booklet, you might consider calling many doctors and see who can get you in the quickest since you're really just in need of a referral to a Neurologist. I'd even be prepared and call ahead to different Neurologist offices and check their appointment availabilities, so you can tell the HMO doc which Neuro can see you quicker.
Not sure if these options are available for you, but if so, maybe you can turn a month wait to just see the doc for the referral, then who knows how long before the Neuro they pick will have you wait.
Maybe, just maybe ... you can see both within the month.
Not sure of your HMO requirements, but this might be worth a try.
Prayers are with you!
God Bless,
Dave

I don't understand why you need a referral to a nero. [smiley=huh.gif]

A majority of neuro's will accept you as a patient without a referral. Just make sure they take your insurance unless you want to pay out of pocket.

Tia,
I've always  done sort of a backwards referral. I find the neuro make the appt, then tell my doc who  calls in the insurance required refrral. For some reason it works out faster for me. Once I got an appt within three days at one office because someone had just cancelled, this last time I got an appt within a month at a place that usually takes five months. You know you best.....don't be afraid to speak up for yourself.

The neuro offices don't need the referral for the appt, they need it for payment. If you were paying cash, they'd let you walk right in. Just be careful about referrals after the date of appt, sometimes the insurance company can be a pain about that.

But the majoity of HMOs wont pay for it without the referal.

I guess I don't understand the difference in insurance types...
I just made an appointment for my wife with my neuro yesterday, and all I had to do was provide them with the policy#, the group# and a customer service ph#, and it was done.... [smiley=huh.gif]

If it was a PPO then I could do this. That is why I cancelled the HMO in the first place to get on Shauns ins.  So that I could go to a neuro without a referal. But with the HMO, the only neuro is University medical center School of Neurology. At least that is what I know.  Last time, I got the referal but they would not make the appointment until they received the referal from the doc.  THey would not accept my copy, they had to get it straight from him, and even with me calling hte doc and bugging the hell out of them to fax it over, it was still 6 weeks for the appointment.

I just dont want to think about it this weekend.

You are all in my thoughts
