Title: Attention Horror Movie Fans... (non CH)
Post by Carl_D on Aug 31st, 2004, 9:42pm
I am so excited I could do jumping jacks.

One of my favorite movies of all time is "Dawn of the Dead." It was the sequel to "Night of the Living Dead" and had a third zombie film that followed "Dawn" called "Day of the Dead." The 1990 remake of "Night" was incredible, but it was directed by the make-up artist from the original "Dawn", Tom Savini.

I just found out that George A. Romero has got the green light from his production company for a FOURTH installment of the Dead series...

"Land of the Dead" is to star none other than Dennis Hopper. I just found out from a horror movie fansite that George is pulling out all stops on this one.
There has been another follow-up called "Day of the Dead: Contagium" that George had nothing to do with. Also, he had nothing to do with this years remake of "Dawn of the Dead" that was poorly done and weak compared to the original.
Being the horror movie buff I am, I just had to share this with y'all.

Peace,
Carl D

P.S. - What's YOUR favorite scary movie?

That original "Dawn of the Dead" was pretty good for it's time.  Haven't seen it since it came out back when.  For some reason that hippie that kept bumping into the wall scared me.  Sounds crazy now.

*edit*  I forgot, for the best scary movie experience, I was real young and went to the movies with my big sister and saw the opening of "Black Sunday"  The crowd was soooo freaked out and screaming so loud the manager had to come over the loud speaker and say " IT'S ONLY A MOVIE,  IT'S ONLY A MOVIE"
My sister was almost hysterical.   It was like a Beatle concert.

Oooo... I loved Dawn of the Dead.  Have seen the whole series multiple times.

I did enjoy this years remake.  Those bastards were -fast-.  Did you watch the whole thing... all the way through the closing credits?

Alien... my #1 favorite shit-your-pants movie.  Saw it in a drive-in when I was quite young.  I enjoy that entire series... even the weak ones.  Was big on AvP... saw that a few weeks ago.

Hmmmm, favorite scary movie...    I'd have to say my all time favorite is "The Silence of the Lambs".

Some other favorites are "Candyman", the original "Nightmare on Elm St.", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Poltergeist", "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and the "Scream" movies.

:)

I think whoever made the new "Dawn of the Dead" had saw "28 Days Later" and decided to make the zombies like the ones in that flick.

The only movie to scare me was the original "Helter Skelter" with Steve Railsback as Charles Manson, because I knew it really happened. I saw it when I was 10 years old. At the end, the guy playing Vincent Bugliosi looks at the camera and says "For every Manson family member we have locked up in custody there are 20 more Charles Mansons out there, waiting to strike."
Yeah, that is JUST what a 10 year old with a hyperactive imagination needs to hear! I'd lie awake at night, not afraid of the boogey man, or Jason from Friday the 13th, or any zombies - but the Manson 'family.'

The "Dawn of the Dead" remake was cool, but the original will always be a classic in my book.

Here is a fun-factoid: In the original "Dawn of the Dead" Tom Savini, the make-up and special effect artist, also did alot of stunts in the movie. If you have the DVD, you can find a bit of a blooper in the movie. When they are hotwiring the trucks to block off the entrances to the mall, Tom Savini gets hit by one of the trucks, but if you pause it and frame-by-frame it, you will see the blue trampoline he jumped off of backwards to make it look like the truck knocked him forward. I about died the first time I saw the trampoline. But it is only visible for half a second. I loved the whole "Nightmare on Elm St" series, the "Friday the 13th" series, "Halloween" and my favorite Stephen King story that was put to film ironically was also directed by George A. Romero. "The Dark Half" will always be my fave Stephen King next to "The Stand."

Peace,
Carl D

Oh, oh , oh thats made my day!!! Finally may be some great horror movies to add to my list, Land of the Dead, oh it 's going to be a great addition!

I could not pick just one, horror movie junkie of all kinds here, Nightmare on Elm Street series, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Helter Skelter movie( book was better), Poltergiest, The Excorcist, oh I could go on all night ;;D

Silence of the Lambs was great in a different scary way...

Stephen King for me would have to be The Stand( his books for me are way better!)

I have a least favorite scary movie, and that'd be "The Exorcist" because it freaked me out so much I swore I would never watch it again I hated it soooo bad, LOL.

Silence of the Lambs made my skin crawl, made me filled with disgust and yet kept me on the edge of my seat.  An excellent movie that played with the mind.

BTW, how come ya'll call "The Stand" a scary movie?  I was never scared by it.  Andrea, I so know what you mean about the books being better.  I had nightmares after reading "Cujo" and "Pet Semetary" when I was a kid.  OMG, those were scary!!

Another movie I hate, is "IT" cause of that damn clown!!  OMG I HATE that clown!  LMFAO

Ah yes, Sam Raimi films.... did you all know he was also the executive producer of the syndicated shows Xena and Hercules:The Legendary Journeys and of course he directed the Spiderman movies.  Also, his brother Ted Raimi had parts in the Xena and Hercules tv shows, and also had either roles or cameo's in his brothers movies.  It's an interesting web and I have read how Sam and Robert Tapert (who was the director of the Xena and Hercules shows) began making movies when they were kids.  Even people like Bruce Campbell, who was in the Evil Dead movies & Army of Darkness (all made by Sam and Robert), was in the tv shows also.  Interesting stuff....

Good one.

Seven... although not a pure horror.

Laugh if you must, but I still thought The Sixth Sense was creepy and well done.

Of course Alien, Halloween (original), and Nightmare On Elm Street (original) were good.

The remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre was reasonably well done and suitably gruesome.  As was the remake of 13 Ghosts (loved the makeup art and effects)... although both were entirely predictable.

Trying to think.... I've seen alot of cheesy vampire movies... love em.  Oh yes, John Carpenter's 'Vampires'... that was different.

I guess The 13th Warrior doesn't count as horror... loved it though.

Van Helsing... was that a horror movie?  No matter it was fun to watch... total special effects, rather predictable, not really scary.

It's damn hard to scare me now-a-days.... the nightmares in my head are far scarier and more gruesome than all of the above... if you've never had a true night terror, you wouldn't understand.

--- Steve

BTW... the absolute worst, most pathetic exscuse for a movie ever created was:  The Blair Witch Project.  All hype, no substance.

What is funny about "Blair Witch Project" a couple of weeks before it made its way to theatres, everything I had read on it led me to believe it was all real. So when we went and seen it opening night, it creeped me out! I was with 4 friends that night, and we debated who killed who. Maybe the guys fooled Heather and killed her. Maybe it was the weird fisherman near the beginning of the film. It wasn't until a couple of days later I found out we were had.

I think alot of people avoided "Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows" because the first one was a pathetic joke, but in all honesty "Blair Witch 2" was a great mindfuck of a movie, and I recommend it highly. What is cool about the DVD is, it has the movie on one side of the disc, and the soundtrack on the other side (which is really good too.) So if you haven't seen it, I think y'all will enjoy it.

Now, if I can make it through the movie, gonna go watch the remake of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Hopefully the beast will leave me alone.

Peace,
Carl D

Well Carl, I've only seen Night of the Living Dead. The only reason is that it's now a classic and all over the place.  I like it.

I don't think I have a favorite scary flick. I thinks Jaws has some of the scariest scenes though.

2001 is in a class by itself.

Here are some I like, Not very scary but just good:

The first two Halloweens. Poltergeist, Alien, Forbidden Planet, The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, I too like Jurassic Park, even The Birds.  There are many more but I can't think of them.....getting old.  Some of my favorite horror flicks are the campy stuff I saw on Mystery Science Theater 3000.  MST3K killed me.

If you want to get into the worst movies; that's easier:

Blair Witch Project is the worst waste of my time that I can think of. Wanted to dump my cable.  Battlefield Earth runs a very close second.

I'm with Eyes_Afire: When I was a kid, I had night terrors. Nothing, but NOTHING compares to a night terror, and since becoming an adult, I've had nightmares that are far beyond anything that the theater could produce.

That said, some of the creepiest movies I've ever seen are, "The Ring," "Ghost Story," "Sixth Sense," "Stir Of Echoes," "The Exorcist," "Omen" series, "The Serpent & The Rainbow," and "The Shining." As a kid, I saw "Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers," and had nightmares for weeks. *shudder*

Gots to be "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" the original with Gunnar Hansen. The sequels & the new one was nothing compared to the original. "Aliens" & "Halloween" was good. The "Secret Window" which is kinda along the same storyline as "The Dark Half" was also good.

Horror buffs should check out this web site;

Carl...who can also forget Tom Savini in "From Dusk to Dawn" I love the part in the bar where the vampires first reveal themselves & go to attack Savini's character & the gun barrel pops out of his pants & shoots the vampire. ;;D Cracks me up, every time I see it.

WOW! Thanks for that link Jimmy. I added it to my faves.
Gotta disagree with you on the remake of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." I just watched it this morning and thought it was pretty hardcore, and had some gruesome scenes in it.
Thanks for reminding me of "Ghost Story" Frank. I haven't seen that movie in many years, but loved it way back when.

Ted had parts in Evil Dead.  Since the film was shot over a very long period, actors were frequently missing.  Ted filled in for their arms and legs in a few shots.

Ted played Scotty's legs as he walked toward his girlfriend.   ;;D

Teds hands were also coming out of the wall to choke Ash.    [smiley=laugh.gif]

Great thread...

Hmmm... Scariest movie... "The Changling" with George C. Scott scared the hell out of me when I was younger. Something about that ball bouncing down the stairs... Special effects and things jumping out at you do nothing to scare me, but the psychological twists in that movie were awesome!

"Don't be Afraid of the Dark" is another good scary movie.

My favorite scary movies are the Scream franchise - but for wholly different reasons than them actually being scary.

Worst movie ever (scary or otherwise): "A.C. Stephens' Orgy of the Dead". It is, of course, an Ed Wood Jr. creation (although he did not direct it), but believe me, it makes "Plan Nine From Outer Space" look like cinematic GOLD. I've never been able to sit through that one all the way through, despite my affection for talentless strippers and an abundance of breasts.

The 1980 classic "The Forbiden Zone" comes in a close second for worst ever...and appears to have had the budget of a small junior-highschool play...but it is a must see if you want to see the best-ever gratuitious frog-sex scene.

Ashley J. 'Ash' Williams rocks! The best lines from Army (IMHO) are:

"I'm bad Ash and you're good Ash. You're a goody little two-shoes. You're goody little two-shoes, goody little two-shoes... hahaha."

"Good...bad. I'm the guy with the gun."

and

"Alright you primitive screw-heads, listen up. See this? This is my boomstick! It's a 12-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan; retails for about one hundred nine, ninety-five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right, shop smart, shop S-Mart!"

and

"Well hello Mister Fancypants. Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and shit... and Jack just left town."

and of course

"Klaatu Barrada n... Necktie... Nickel... It's an "N" word, it's definitely an "N" word!"

I'm gonna go turn on my DVD player now, thank you very much...

I think the only movie I never made it through once I started watching it was "The Exorcist."  It scared me bad, and I never tried to watch it again.  Now that I think about it, maybe I will.

Always thought "The Serpent and the Rainbow" was a bit freightening, especially when the guy hammers the spike through the other guy's bits.

Best stupid horror flick in my book has to be "Killer Klownz from Outer Space."  Sucking out blood from humans wrapped in cotton candy through crazy straws...loved it.

My first scary movie was "Mister Sardonicus". It would probably be a big laugh watching it today, but as a 7 yr. old, I was scared to death.

Most scary movies are/where: "The Birds", "Excorcist", "Chainsaw Massacre", & "Night of the Dead", "The Shinning", "Nightmare on Elm Street" & "Silence of the Lambs".

And I love "Dusk to Dawn".

ps. forgot one: "Pyshco"

Forgot that one. I must have been a teenager when I saw this thing. It was truly uncomfortable to watch at the time.

I liked a thing called "Black Christmas." It has other names but basically a psycho terrorizes a Canadian Sorority house. I liked the atmosphere. Margot Kidder is in it briefly

One of my favortie Japanese nightmares is something called "The Neptune Men," I think. Goofball aliens with antenna helmets.  Hilarious.

Am I the only one who took "The Exorcist" so lightly that I considered it a comedy?  ;;D

If you seen it when it released to the theatres, "Friday the 13th Part III in 3D" was wicked! Especially when the harpoon shoots and is headed right between your eyes, or when the dude is upside down on his hands walking and takes the machete down the crotch, but it looked like it was coming right at you. I loved it!

I loved "The Blob" with Steve McQueen, and the remake in 1988. Another wicked movie is "The Serpent and the Rainbow."

If I can find it among my movies, I have "The Wicker Man" somewhere, which is an obscure film about a cult with Christopher Lee. If I can find it, I'm gonna watch it.

Peace,
Carl D

Not really. You know, funny is a good way to describe it.  ::)

It's almost as funny as "Gone With the Wind." I crack up every time I see part of it. The acting is so bad and forced, it's funny.

"The Wicker Man" is very good. I haven't seen that in years.

"How about The Day the Earth Caught Fire?" It takes place almost entirely in a English newspaper room while the earth is moving toward the sun because of twin nuclear tests. One of my favorite SF movies. Probably because it's all dialogue.

Only 32 movie channels are hooked into my new digital cable system. Only Chuck has that kind of time   ;;D
