Title: Computer Security (NON CH) Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Aug 25th, 2004, 10:12am We have recently started having problems at our Library with some very bold person (probably a kid) stealing computers. They actually walked out the door twice now with a computer system. Last week they took one (Right under our very aware staffs nose) and broke off the case lock, opened it up, and then stole the processor and RAM out of it. Does anyone know of a good case alarm that can be used for our systems? I'm looking for something that has a mercury switch in it or something like that to detect that it has been moved and set of a LOUD alarm. I've already found one that looks promising at http://www.microsnitch.com but I have gotten almost no answers out of them when trying to contact them with questions about their product. I know that there are some people here whos jobs are similar to mine and may have some ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I can just rig up a decoy with some explosives......... Without a special backout tool you absolutely cannot get into the case to remove the guts. Fairly inexpensive. Similar to the type of screws they use on bathroom stall partitions. |

Pliers or vise grip or something like that. They also don't seem to care if they break the case in the process. Our staff is obviousely asleep at thier desks and wouldn't notice any way. Until you've run a business that has a public bathroom, you just cannot understand or imagine all of the weird and disgusting things people will do. I happen to have a bar, so add alcohol to the mix and you just never know what's going to be next. People removing screws is an automatic problem Dunno why, don't care why. Keeping a public bathroom in shape for the general public is a challenge. |

Thiefs are creatures of habit & usually strike around the same time & day of week. i.e. if it's a weekday or weekend. During morning, afternoon or night. Jimmy |

That's another thing on my wish list. With a building the size of this one, it would take at least 8 cameras to keep an eye on our stuff. Trying to get the Library board to spend money on anything like this would be like talking Santa into shaving his beard. We DO have video surveillance at the other Library where we eventually caught a kid stealing computer equipment. I zip tied some stuff together that I thought he would try to steal. He went for it and got slowed down enough that our staff caught him. The surveillance video sealed the deal. I would take a hot glue gun and glue the locking lever to the CPU, same with the ram. May not stop em but will shure as hell slow em down. Lee |
