Title: MB Poll.
Post by echo on Aug 23rd, 2004, 9:39am
You take your 60lb mutt to the vet to get it's nails trimmed.  The mutt has been given drugs to help mellow her out and reduce the stress experienced at the vet.  The dog is nervous.  You reach down to pick her up and she bites the absolute crap out of your thumb,  bad enough to require a trip to the ER to get it cleaned and sutured.  The dog is 6 yrs old.

The poll question is:

Would you put your dog down due to it having bit it's owner?

No. I would chalk it up to the drugs and stress. If, after her trip to the vet and the drugs have worn off, she bites again, if she survived getting the shit kicked out of her, then yeah, I'd have her put down.

No .................not unless the dog has showed an aggressiveness to the owner before.

most likly was a snap do to stress.

My old dog snapped at me the other day. she has hip displaysia. I was rubbing he and i must have hit a sore spot that day and she snapped a me.  she is a really mellow dog and i am sure i had hit a sore spot.  I am not even thinking putting her down.

no! I had a cat that would turn into an absolute nut whenever I took it to the vet, it was fine at home.

The way your worded the post it reads like you are really pissed at the dog right now,  you should take your own state of mind into account.

If...this is the first time, the dog has snapped. Then my vote is absolutely NOT. Dog was stressed & under the influence.

If she/he continues to show this type of behavior, then maybe you need to think about it.

Just my 2 cents. You've got to do what you think is right.

I'd give the dog another chance since there was obviousely stress from the vet, drugs, strange place, etc...

On a side note: I got bit by a dog Friday morning and actually allowed the damn thing to live because my daughter was there and would have freaked if I would have kicked the dogs head off.

I'd give the dog another chance too, if it had shown no previous signs of aggression.  Clipping nails shouldn't be that traumatic when done correctly.  When I had a dog (and I've had several), I would trim them myself.  It's really not that hard.

60 lbs. and 6 years old. Well if he does it again, he sounds good enough to eat. No sense wasting a perfectly good dog.  [smiley=biggrin.gif]

No, I would not put the dog down.  Like everyone else said I think the reaction was due to stress and the meds.  We had sort of the same problem and switched groomers. Now the dog is much mellower and less meds are needed.

Yeah I pretty much agree with everyone else here and after reading your first post again, it makes sense!  It sounds to me like the dog was upset about the vet and maybe the meds agitated it instead of calming it down?  If it hasn't been mean before, I'd at least wait and see a little bit.

When I was 9, our black lab ran away from home (which he used to always do because he wasn't fixed), and normally we always got him back the same day he left.  He was gone 3 days this time, and when my mom finally found him, she noticed he was different.  She took him to the vet and he snapped at the nurse pretty bad.  At that time, they recommended to put him down because she had 2 small children still at home and he was showing obvious signs of distemper.  It was hard on all of us, but I guess it seemed like the right thing to do at the time!  He was much bigger than me and my little brother and he was 11 or so years old.

I'd give your dog another chance to calm down, but watch out for your own good too!!!

Lizzie2 :)

You said that the dog was given meds to deal with the stress of being at the vets. Why do so many animals get stressed out when they're at the vet? I think it's because practically everytime an animal goes there it involves pain. I've also seen perfectly calm animals go apeshit in the vets office after another animal has been put down. They can sense death imho.

I vote no

Only you know the dog's whole story.  If it was a one time thing and the dog somehow survived it.  I'd probably say no.  If he had a history of it, I have a 12 guage and 4 acres in the country with coyotes and other critters that cross it.

I agree, since the dog bite was  due to the stress and meds then NO way would I put the dog down. But if the dog has bittten before for no reason then yes, another vet trip would be a good choice. My lab is dummber then a box of hair! LOL He loves to ride but you get near the vets office and he looses it BIG TIME! Hes very calm and loving untill its vet time. Dogs are smarter then we give them credit for in most cases. Unless of course your dealing with my lab. LOL But hes mine and he loves my kids.  ;;D

I agree with everyone else.....except Root and Gator.  You two are mean!

Give him another chance.  And trim his nails yourself.  If you can't, find a traveling groomer who will come to your house every month to do it.

No Way!
Drugs and stress are the culprit.
I have watched all my dogs anticipate trips to the vet. Some quaked with fear, some hid, the Danes retreated into another mental state but few have enjoyed visits to the vet. The place reeks of fear and pain! Their noses work 30,000 times better than ours'.
You can buy dog nail clippers. I always wait until Dog is calm and sleepy - usually after exercise and food and then very calmly make a start. Praise each successfully trimmed nail, and reward when the job is complete with a special treat. Don't try to do them all at once the first time - one foot is good.  Try to do another the next day.
Starting this while they are puppies makes the job easier later on and avoids involving the vet at all; most dogs trust their owners more than a comparative stranger. If you are nervous, wear leather gloves. Make sure you're holding the clippers the right way up.

Sorry you got bitten tho' echo. Keep an eye on the sutured thumb too - they often get infected due to lack of circulation. Must've been a bad injury to need sutures?
Hope you and Dog are still friends. (he didn't mean it - he was trying to protect you from the vet but was seeing quadruple!!)

Hope you feel a lot better soon

If you clip them yourself, just watch not to clip too closely.  My mom is afraid to clip our dog's because the vein runs into their toenails and she's afraid she might clip it!  But I agree with Deb...maybe need to find another way to get the dog's nails clipped!

A boot is different than an injection or 9 mm.

Add to my post: Not only selfish but also inhumane. You have no heart if you do that.

Tom,
Curious if you own a dog?

Secondly,  regardless of the sequence of events this dog has attacked the hand that feeds it and knows the taste of human blood.  In that dogs mind, due to their social behavior, she now thinks she is the alpha due to me partially backing down.

I guarantee one thing - that dog as much as growls at my wife or childen I'll shoot it where its stands.

Do I currently own a dog? No. Have I yes. Many.

Do I understand where you are coming from. Yup.

But remember, these are learned behaviors. There must be more to this equation than you have told us. I like Ree's suggestion.

I’ve a little dog 25 lbs that would not bite you if you bit him, he would try and get away and if he did nip at you, only a warning. Breed "Sheltie" smartest dog breed on the planet, except border collies, closely related.

One of my jobs in a past life was a dog groomer...here are 2 tools that are a fussy nail trimmee's best friend:

http://store1.yimg.com/I/morrco_1802_3717851
and
http://www.windshielddoctor.com/dremel.jpg
The drill is handy for black nails and if you feel squeamish about using a nail clipper.

I've also used dog hobbles (similar to horse hobbles) for dogs that keep pulling feet back.

Another trick - tie the dog's collar very close to a table leg, put the muzzle on (the dog, heh heh) if you feel nervous, stick the hobbles on and that dog will not be able to move an inch.

Once the dog figures out you'll win, he/she will mellow out...

Good luck!

Chris

simply....no I wouldn't.

Chloe gets all beat up over pretty much anything, I've had her drugged on several occasions all in the name of "de-stressing" her as much as possible...guess what, probably only added to the stress but still never been bit. I personally would find a new vet if they drugged my dog for a nail trimming.

13 years of vet teching.
What drug was your dog given Echo?
Some sedating drugs will make a dog super sensitive so they really will see double or triple something coming at them, including thumbs.
Some sedations will work the opposite on some dogs.  Same as humans, we all react to different drugs differently.

Of the BILLIONS of nails that I have trimmed, I've seen them all.  Very calm dogs that you can do ANYTHING to, but if they've had a nail "quicked" when they were young, if they see the clippers they are OFF THE WALL!!  Very hyper dogs FREEZE when you go to touch them, and then everything in between.

Anyways, give your dog another chance.  I strongly suspect it was the drugs.  If you need to use the same drug, definately muzzle her before doing anything else to her.

Good luck to both of you, take care of that finger.
Are you on antibiotics?
Mast
Oh...btw...that taste of blood stuff...that's bullshit unless she was out chasing and killing chickens with her pack.  And in her drugged state Alpha probably never crossed her mind...she was probably protecting herself.
Just my opinion.

The bizarre vet I briefly worked for....I help kill a lot of pets.....clipped that vein often enough. Used a soldering iron on them. Sounds worse than it is but is has to hurt like hell.

My dogs love to go to the vet's office. It is their favorite place to go to. I also trim their nails at home. But if a dog is stressed out and sedated, one would probably bite. Put the dog down? No.

I've never had a pot of dog before...hmmmm. ;)

ya know...if ya clip the vein in a dog's toenail...pack corn starch into the tip of the nail and apply pressure....the bleeding SHOULD stop....bird owners do it with blood feathers...same principle for dog toes.

Ramon

modified to add: the 9 mm injection thing probably wouldnt work anyhow, I've seen dogs take two point blank shots from a 9mm straight to the head and live...

I once rescued a 3 year old male husky from a bad shelter.  Within about a week he bit me on the hand pretty good.  (stitches and shot)  During the fracas, I 'corrected' him sharply   :D  That was it, I was boss and he became the coolest dog I ever had.

I always take a Xanax before going to get a pedicure....helps me to relax and really enjoy having my feet rubbed and nails trimmed and painted...

....But I never felt the need to bite the little lady doing the pedicure.

OH, we are talking about a dog here....hmmmmmm.

Why we expect human reactions out of animals is beyond me...they are just that, animals.  The dog was nervous, frightened and stressed out.  If I were walking around on his paws I probably would have snapped, too.

Give Man's best friend another chance. He probably didn't mean it....
