It sounds more like a defective keyboard than a virus....But I'm not really computer literate either.  Viruses usually do more sinister things.  Keyboards are cheap though, may be worth a try..

Best Wishes

You gotta quit going to those porn sites!   ;;D

Editted to add:  Before you do anything else - just try turning off the computer, unplugging it and hitting the power button a couple times.  Then plug it back in and fire it up and test it.

Could be a defective keyboard.  Borrow one from a friend for a few minutes or they are like $9 or $10 at Walmart.  Make sure you turn off your computer before swapping keyboards.

I suppose it could also be either some type of virus intentionally or someone with hands on access accidentally remapped some of the keys.

Could just be the loose nut behind the keyboard or you're having an ID 10 T error.  There's always the possibility of a PEBKAC error as well.

I don't know Ree! Gator makes a lot of sense to me though (esp. the loose nut behind the keyboard [smiley=laugh.gif]).

I've been having problems of my own. When I have more than one window open at a time, the damn thing keeps swapping windows when I move the cursor around. The only way I can keep more than one window open at a time is to minimize all but what I'm working in. I'm running a good AV(Norton), so I don't think it's a virus. I suspect it may have something to do with my browser, since it seemed to start about the time I went to FireFox (although it does it with IE, too). Maybe someone will help us both out. I know we've got some very puter literate people on this board!

Ree -  Do both shift keys cause the problem, or just the one on the left?  Did you press the Caps Lock key on purpose? I couldn't find a description of any virus that changes the letters the way you described. Keyboard problem is more likely.

Alleyoop - Does your Norton have spyware removal?  The most common "Windows Behaving Badly" problems today are from spyware - viruses can be more destructive, by spyware is more likely to make your system flaky.

Thanks Floridian,

I've got Norton Internet Security(no spyware protection). But I do also have Webroot's Spy Sweeper. I just got through running it. All it found was an Alexa toolbar, which I quarentined. You can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Alexa is fairly beneign these days(nothing but adware). I doubt that's what's causing my problem. I'm going to run LavaSoft's AdAware. Maybe it'll come up with something.

Keyboard or chipset...  keyboard is most probable, cheaper and easier to replace.  Dust, soda, kids, etc. wreak havoc on an otherwise durable device.

Alley, if you've killed all the spyware and viruses and still have the problem, download "hijackthis".  Run the program, scan and save to log, then email that log file to me.  Do not use the fix option with that program unless you know what you are doing.  I can help you out with that once I see the log.  Spyware and hijacks are not the same thing!

I dont know that answer Ree - but it sounds like what happened when i spilled 1/2 a can of Dew on mine.

Now, about keyboards.............  anyone know where I can find the plastic cover that goes over keyboards?  You know  - they have the keys on them so you can type ON the plastic and the keyboard doesn't get messed up?

I've seen a lot of businesses have them on their keyboards,  and no retailer around here has them -  so I even tried an office supply store - NOPE.
Anyone??   I needs me one!

Ive been thru tooooooooooo many keyboards... LOL

Those are not very popular anymore.  Your best chance at finding one would be at an office supply store (Office Depot or something).  Newer keyboards are designed in such a way that makes them spill resistant (not the cheap ones), and therefore a cover for them is redundant.

What, no comment about the ID 10 T error?
Write all the letters/numbers down on a piece of paper with no spaces...  LOL

Guess we're all just a bunch of IDIOTS.

Ree---Gator is right. Could be the keyboard. Did you spill any drinks on it? Unplugg it and plug it in. Try it then. If no go, then buy a new one.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yes I do, you gave away the joke, it should only be written as ID Ten OT when users are around, that way they will never know we are making fun of them.
