Title: Scared
Post by athos on Aug 13th, 2004, 6:47pm
Monday at 7:30 they begin cutting on me.

I am having an anterior discectomy c4-c5.  This is an add on to the c5-c7 that I already have.

They have to take the old hardware out and put in new.

http://www.xdup.com/port/images/neck_side2a.jpg

There are a couple of things that I am worried about....

#1 is that taking out screws and putting them back in the same holes...  although I am no handyman I have done that before and they end up being a little loose.  I asked about that and they said, well there could be that problem...  I asked if there was an orthopedic molly bolt and they said no.

#2 I am still falling down, knees are buckling stills.  I am scared that I will end up a quad...

I'd be surprised if you weren't worried about this kind of thing. The sawbones will be scared enough too and will make it  it come out all right.

My thoughts are with you and I hope you don't have this guy:   :D

OMG :o

You spine looks just like mine with no curvature in it at all.  You have fewer arthritic spurs, and a little more space between veribra...what is this proceedure for?  I'm truely curious.  It's almost like looking at my own ex-rays. :o

Fewer spurs...  they ground them down the last time they were in there.

c4 disc is blown and making my right arm shoulders and neck numb and hurt.....

Athos,

Going on the way you have been is not an option any longer.  I'm sure this will help your situation.  There will be some recovery time and physical therapy, but I'm sure they have taken this as the best route to go for you at this time.  Try to go with trust.
All the VIBES I can gather for you, on the way.

Ken, having had both anterior and posterior C4-5-6-7 fussion i can understand your concerns. Other than the post op pain and nec brace, the pain caused by the spine was relieved at once.

Trust your medical team, have deep faith, and go in as calm and positvie as possible.

Monday will be a day you are at the top of my 'thought & prayer list.

Peace,
-dan

Hey Althos,

First,  I had had 2 back operations so far. Had my back broken in 91.  Used TSRH  type of fixation when they fused my spine.
Did research on the implants and found out that No matter what type they use the bone always grows away from the  fixation.  They should use some type of  bone puddy to re install the fixation.  Are they going to fuse the bones or just use the fixation to keep things in place?  I have found the the Dr.  i used answed all of my questions and concerns i had.  Also Just like this CH thing we go thru you need to educate yourself.

I'd go with what Dan said Athos,

and it looks to me like the new proceedure will strengthen above and below the old area.  Not that I'm a Dr. or anything..

Althos,

Yes,  they use either coral, cadaver bone,or like me the DR. cut peices out of my hip and then ground it up and made a bone puddy out of it and  packed the area with this mix.  Some of the bone that was cut from my hip was made into little strips and laid in along my spine to help strenthen the area of the fusion.

Before i had my operation i called and talked to the head of their design and testing dept for spinal fixations at TSRH. They had sent me a large packet of the test data from the testing done on my type of fixations. How the testing was done on cadavers , pigs and cattle.  Interesting reading and gives you a good back ground on the type of fixations that are to be used.  Also it will give you  the pros and cons of using certain types of fixations.  The stainless steel type seem to be the best.

The titainium type are known  to break after a peroid of time due to  cyclic bending moments.   Fred a friend of mine had those and his broke.  The screw snapped off in his spine and the Dr. was not able to get it back out.  He has had 9 operations so far.

Make sure you ask the Dr. about the amount of nerve damage you might have. Mine took about 1 and a half years to have most of the numbness go away.  The only thing that i still have is my foot is still numb. To this day i still have pain in my hip where the DR. took the bone from.  Other than that i am fine and am able to do just about anything i did before the accident.

Hey, bro.  Just hang in there and keep it loose.  We got your back vibes and prayers wise.  Maybe you can get one of the nurses to take an x-ray with you like jonny's pic.   ;;D

When you go in ask to see all the equipment they are gonna use.  If anything says "Binford" on it - run like hell!

Athos,

Finally I hear from you.

*hang in there Vibes on the way*  It's natural to be frightened.  My cousin has several "nuts and bolts" in his neck.  I don't know the details.  You may want to use a salthingyer compress to help the wounds close once they're done in there.
