I lived in Miami for a couple of years in the seventies. Always wanted a hurricane to hit so we could have a "hurricane party". Never got my wish. Kinda glad now- Mother Nature can be awesome. Batton down the hatches John and hold on! They're already calling Charley the worst storm to hit Florida since Andrew! ..........................................alley :-/ |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by Superpain on Aug 13th, 2004, 4:26pm I got hit by Opal and Erin... And I've been hit by the beat... I'll take a hurricane any day. ;) Although if you're getting hit with CH without electricity for the next week, that could suck... :-/ |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by karma on Aug 13th, 2004, 5:17pm Just a quick note to Rock_Lobster There is nothing way cool about a hurricane. That kinda attitude is what gets the emergenecy folks hurt trying to save your ass. I've been through way to many and they are no fun. For John and anyone else in the area. Be safe! Thankfully the worst is only within a small area and its moving fast. |

I'd disagree... I enjoyed my first one alot. But maybe that's because I was eating mushrooms all day. Not cool if you live on the beach and get hit, not cool if you get trapped in one, not cool if you lose all your shit... Not cool being without power for long periods afterwords... Maybe not cool at all... But interesting and possibly fun nonetheless. |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by karma on Aug 13th, 2004, 5:28pm After Hurricane Louis I was out of power for six months, Lost the roof on my house and I was lucky. Basically I saw an island of 80,000 people ripped to shreds 36 hours of hurricane winds topping out at over 200 mph for two hrs. straight No exaggeration and not cool Sorry about that its a pet peeve. trying to explain the intensity of a cat 2 or more hurricane to some one thats never been through it is like trying to explaine CH to someone that never had it. Be safe everyone. |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by Superpain on Aug 13th, 2004, 5:42pm I think "Island" is the key word here.... :o It's much different getting hit on the mainland. I'm pretty sure I would not care to experience any cat hurricane on an island. ;) |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by Cathi04 on Aug 13th, 2004, 5:46pm All of you, be safe..post when you can...and IF it is safe, take pics.... After being thru 5 earthquakes in my tenure in California, I would say everyone is right.......natural disasters are destructive and frightening and expensive... but they sure can be exciting as well... Take care of your families, hurricaners....and we will be sending lots of vibes to you! PF..and damage free... Cathi |

From what I've seen, Florida's geography doesn't slow them down much. I hope I'm wrong about this though. New Yorkers just don't know much about them. Other than the Island, we just get a lot of rain. Stay safe and here's an excuse to check on your terrorist survival kit. I wish it wasn't the case. Careful! Charlie |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by floridian on Aug 14th, 2004, 9:16am Made it through with no problems - the storm tracked a bit to the south, and was weakened by the time it crossed land. South Florida on the Gulf Coast was really hammered, though. They are still not sure of the extent of the damage .,, all of the fire stations in one county destroyed. |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by john_d on Aug 14th, 2004, 6:31pm I am at a friends who actually still has power. That sucked. It started out being scary awesome but quickly became just scary. :P I am ok though, two trees went down in my lawn and this morning I could not get out of my driveway. But, myself, my house, and even my screened pool enclosure are all ok. Thanks for your thoughts and vibes. John D. |

Title: Re: waiting to get slammed Post by Edna on Aug 14th, 2004, 7:36pm John, that's great news. Glad you got the chance to let us know you're ok. Wishing the best outcome for all involved. My take on hurricanes is that it sure in the hell ain't nothing to joke about. Lives can be lost so easily. Karma, you're so right, officials fight so hard to educate the people on storms, let's not take it lightly and make fun. Praying for all in the path of destruction. EDNA |
