Title: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by Jonny on Aug 10th, 2004, 4:05pm Prof's gadget stores med records on key chain By Kay Lazar Tuesday, August 10, 2004Talk about one-stop shopping. A new gadget invented by a Boston University professor lets consumers store their medical records - every ailment, allergy, medication, even X-rays - on a key chain. ``It can give people a peace of mind that whenever anything happens, they have their medical records right in their pocket,'' said Dr. Carl Franzblau, associate dean of BU's Graduate Medical Sciences. Franzblau, 69, got fed up trying to remember his medical history each time he went to a new doctor. And he struck out trying to find a pocket-sized product that neatly categorized and stored reams of such data. So he invented Med-InfoChip, which sells for about $70 and plugs into the USB port on any computer or laptop. The computer chip's software - Windows and Mac compatible - creates a template for users to fill in detailed information, with a table of contents for easy reference. The data can be quickly downloaded when visiting a new doctor or used by emergency workers - all Boston ambulances carry computers - in an accident. ``I think it has some potential,'' said Boston's Emergency Medical Services chief Rich Serino, who hadn't yet seen the new product. Security conscious consumers can put a password on their chip, so if it's lost no one can gain access to their medical records. The downside is, a password would also shut out doctors in an emergency. ......................jonny |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by Gator on Aug 10th, 2004, 4:28pm I wouldn't mind having something like this. My memory seems to be getting worse rapidly in the last year. I don't know if it's the ch or all the meds I've taken for it or if Alzheimers (which runs in my family) is starting to rear it's ugly head, but it scares the hell out of me sometimes. Plus I HATE filling out those damned forms. Gator |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Aug 10th, 2004, 4:44pm Wouldn't the medic alert bracelet give you the same thing? Just curious. My son-in-law wears one all the time which lists all of his meds on it. |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by Charlie on Aug 10th, 2004, 5:12pm Sounds familiar Jonny. They implant chips or something in pets and have thought about it for us I think. No need for the key chain info. All you need is the url of the Department of Justice. They know more about me than I do. Charlie |

This goes way beyond the bracelet. This would contain a complete medical history. Gator |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by Karla on Aug 10th, 2004, 6:56pm Yes, Charlie you are right they do implant that stuff in pets and in some selected small communities for experimentation of the product in the US they have implanted small chips into the back of human hands. Then they just scan them. This has all there medical, financial, educational data etc on it. This is suppose to be great because of the potential to stop identity theft and regular theft. They go to the store to make a purchase and just have there hand scanned for payment. Personally I think it is the mark of the devil which says it will be on our hands and forheads and you wont be able to buy or sell without it. Revelations I will never get one! |

I've always wondered about that. Most of us have a drivers license, a social security card and at least one credit card. Maybe the 3 sixes are 3 6 digit numbers? Gator Editted to add: If you throw in the 26 letters of our alphabet to the 10 numeric digits, a 6 digit number could probably be big enough for this. |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by r_headache on Aug 11th, 2004, 7:53am Being in the area of computer security I see one BIG downfall to this product, computer admins at the hospitals won't want people just sticking in their USB device into their network because of the potential of viruses that can be installed. |

Title: Re: Didnt we talk about something like this? Post by gore2424 on Aug 12th, 2004, 12:21am I carry a list of everything to do about my health problems, current meds, insurance, and such in. Billfold, pocket pouch medicine bag I carry with me 24/7, info also in fireproof container in both familey cars and in fireproof container in house. My wife has in her purse also. And she updates all every 3 weeks like clockwork. Plus I have a list at my dads house and my older sister has list too. So guess I could say I cover most bases. |
