Title: MS XP Service Pack 2 update
Post by Root on Aug 9th, 2004, 11:26am
SP2 appears to be out for download for the general public.

http://www.theregister.com/2004/08/09/winxp_sp2_weekend_release/

The CDs appear to be a 4 - 6 week waiting period, but you should be able to get it through your windows update mechanism.

XP2 is out, and the full file size is 266MB.  Microsoft would rather you wait a little while and use the 'Windows Update' feauture in IE.  If you want to download the real thing (useful if you want to make a slipstreamed install disk for XP + SP2) here is the link:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en)

This is a good update so far with many users reporting performance gains on it.  Unlike beta versions of SP2, this update has not been rendering systems completely useless (oops).  This one looks pretty solid so far and will make your computer safer (assuming it's clean now at all)

I downloaded it to my home directory. Haven't figured out how to install it yet.
Guess I'm just slow at this sort of thing. [smiley=curtain.gif]

Run it using wine, just make sure you aren't running in root, that is until you know what you are dealing with.

More problems! Looks like it may be a while before MS releases SP2 to the general public.

Thanks for the info guys! I really appreciate these posts about computer related things.
I'll wait for SP2 a while....... don't want it breaking anything.
SP1 broke things too. I hastily downloaded that and spent a week without the computer while it was fixed.
I'm learning.(?)
happy days

BUT... I run XP pro corporate edition... I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
I used the multiple computer update, which is appropriate for my OS I'd think...
