Title: Ok here is a good one, just learned this today
Post by farmboy on Aug 8th, 2004, 8:34pm
Just found out today that my cousin,  a male , same age as me Has clusters. This is the part that is interesting he started his headaches the same year as i did and his episodes are at the same time of the year as mine are. He is also a left side like i am.  he also had a break from then for about 10 years like i did and they started back with them in the same year as i did when they returned. we have had headaches again since jan 2001.

The genetic link is looking pretty much certain now but the gene itself hasn't been identified yet, so you are living proof!

Yes,  we knew our grandmother had gotten headaches but we never really talked to her about it before her death some years ago. She used to tie a towel around her head on the left side with ice in it. If i do remember correctly from when i was a young boy. at the family picnic we were talking and it just came out over dinner. am going to try to find out more about the family connection. the next time we get together.

thanks for the info pub girl

also if anybody who read this  the person ....floridian might want to read this she seems to know alot. on this headache thing

Floridian is a He!

It has been discussed quite a lot on here before, so I expect he is pretty clued up already.
The main starting point of the research was that of 5 sets of monozygotic twins studied, all had CH. The general thinking though is that a rogue gene of some kind is responsible, but that "other factors" then come into play to cause Ch to manifest. There are cases of monozygotic twins where one twin doesn't have CH, but it seems in these cases that there are major differences between the twins' lives after birth.
There is a major study underway at the moment to try and identify the gene concerned, and work out what its function is when it is functioning correctly.

Is he a monozygotic twin (i.e. split egg twin)

Do you mean identical?

no they are not identical.

Yep, it means identical. That would explain it then, non-identical twins may well have a totally different genetic make-up as they are made from two different eggs as well as two different sperm. Monozygotic twins are made when one sperm meets one egg, then that egg divides to create two identical individuals.

In other words, you could feasibly be more genetically similar to the Ch sufferer than his own twin brother is!

the thiing that is really got me is that we are the same in almost every way , with these headaches and the time of the year we get them same side and everything. grandmother i thing was the same side as we are if i remember right seeing her with her head wrap on.

If the geneticists are right about this, that suggests that a gene was passed by your grandmother to your father and onto you, and that same gene went via your aunt to your cousin

Very interesting!

No twins in my family, but plenty of CH. I've got two younger brothers that are both episodic, one in cycle right now. The other one first went into cycle when he was 19. He was in and out of cycle til he was 39. He's 49 now and been PF for about 10 yrs. Our paternal grandmother also suffered from 'horrible headaches'. I can remember her wraping hot peppers around her head! I was a late bloomer, diagnosed with CCH over four years ago(I'm 55), although I can remember somewhere around age 10-12 having terrible headaches and banging my head on the floor.

Interesting thread. Just thought I'd throw my info in. Wonder how many more family connections are out there!

My paternal grandmother had horrible headaches. She passed away some time ago.  So I don't know what kind they were exacly. Last week my aunt mentioned that they were very painful and always happened exactly at the same time of day.

makes me wonder.

Damn... NOBODY in my family has cluster headaches. I guess I'm just lucky. Must have hit the genetic lottery or something...  [smiley=huh.gif]

I've got a second cousin that has/had them....

.... I haven't seen the guy in years.... but it'd be nice to let him know, if I do, that there are more of 'him' out there....

My paternal Grandmother had serious HA undiagnosed....

My mother, maternal grandfater maternal Great Grandmother all had undiagnosed serious HA.  My 6 year old son has episodic CH, undiagnosed, but from watching him that is all I can tell.

Marcs real father went through a phase (around 2 years in length) of having terrible pains in his head (dont know if it was the same side as marc) and according to marcs mum he was sectioned because of it.

He was a violent acholoic so was extrememly violent and put away because they thought he was mad.

We hardly ever see him because he is still an alcholoholic and marcs wants nothing to do with him - but it might be worth us finding more about his headaches?
