Welcome motye51......sorry you need us but glad you found us..

We all know all too well what these folks are going through.....

My husband is now going on his 5th week of cluster headaches.  He was just diagnosed Friday, August 6th.  He is exhausted, depressed, losing weight, and just all out miserable.  I don't even think that is a good enough word for it.  We have 4 children and a small business.  My whole house is waking up from 11:30 - 12:00 every night trying to help him get over this awful pain.  But nothing we do seems to help.  We finally got our hands on some medicine and we have the oxygen tank in our room.

The reason for this message is that I don't feel like I am going to be able to handle this if this is an ongoing thing?  I know that sounds really terrible but my husband is so useless after he has these headaches it makes him debeliatated.  I feel like he's turning back into a child?  I know that sounds horrible on my part but I don't know what else to say.  For 4-5 weeks now these headaches are running our business into the ground.  I'm trying to get all 4 children ready to go back to school and it's just not working.  No one in my house is sleeping because we're getting up with him.  He's so scared to go to bed at night it's not even funny.  Like clockwork - we go to bed for 9:00 - 9:30 at 11:30 he's up immediately throwing up and ice on the face and nothing we seem to give him works.  I'm waiting for him to O.D. on all the freakin medicine he's on.  Instead of feeling sympathy I'm getting mad and I know that's not right.  These things are taking over my household and I hate them.  Will they ever end?  Will my husband ever be the same again?  What can I do?

Whay say you Family? What do we do best around here?

Mark

My husband and I have been reading through all of the message boards.  It's actually quite scarey.  I almost don't know what to think.  The reference to shadows we have to assume is the swollen, weird feeling in his right eye socket that never seems to leave.  It's always there just in a 3-4 pain catagory.  My husband said the reference of," The Beast!" is very appropriate.  5 weeks now he's had them every night, and the last 3 nights he managed to get a break from them.  Today, at around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, he got one which ranged in a 7.  It came on really fast and furious.  He dosed himself up with all of the medicines he's gotten and used the oxygen tank twice, which seemed to work.  His question is now, can you take Imitrex as a prevenative before bed or only once the headache comes on?  Our doctor really didn't specify.  Also, can you take Imitrex more than once a day?  Also, does anyone have any information on the side effects of Prednizone.  He's complaining that his legs are hurting now.  Just wondereing if that is a side effect?
Thanks,
Melissa

I'm so sorry that you had reason to search us out, but so glad that you did find us. Yes, by all means, read, vent, hammer the walls of this place! Whatever it takes to give you all the strength to get through this. Imitrex, if it's injectable, is only to be used as an abortive. It is not a preventative. In other words, taking a shot before bed isn't going to do anything except waste the shot and give him a good headrush.

Any chance of his doctor putting him on Verapamil? This seems to work for a great many people as a preventative.

Very best wishes to you both.

-Frank

Welcome Motye.

Sorry to hear your Hubby is in so much pain right now. If it is a typical episodic cycle, it shouldn't be much longer before he's PF again. I agree with Jeep. See about getting off the prednisone and ask the doc about Verapamil as a prevent instead. Meds work differently for each person. Imitrex is an abortive. Have your hubby read the Imitrex tip to the left of this page. He will find that 1/2 shot works as well as a full shot. Is the 02 working ? Does he have a 12-15 ltr. flow regulator ?

Good luck to you and your Hubby. Sending PF vibes your way.
